THE DEITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. By S. C. Lowry, M.A. (i) Divine attributes and Divine works are assigned to the Holy Ghost; e.g. omniscience (i Cor. ii. ii), omnipotence (i Cor. xii. ii), omnipresence (Ps. cxxxix. 7). (2) The blasphemy against the Holy GJiost is not remitted (S. Matt. xii. 31, 32). (3) Our Lord was conceived by the Holy Ghost. If, however, the Holy Ghost were a created being, our Lord would be the Son of a Creature, and not the Son of God. (4) The lie of Ananias is convertibly spoken of as a lie to the Holy Ghost and a lie to God (Acts v. 3, 4). The con-  junction of the two phrases implies their identity. (5) Christians are described either as temples of God or as temples of the Holy Ghost (i Cor. vi. 19 ; i Cor. iii. 16). The indwelling of the Holy Ghost would, therefore, appear to be the indwelling of God. (6) "The Lord is that Spirit" (2 Cor. iii. 17). Here "the Lord" is Jehovah, the God of Heaven and earth (see Exodus xxxiv. 34). The expression, therefore,, tells us that the Spirit is the Lord. (7) The Holy Ghost is named conjointly with the Father and the Son in the threefold benediction, " The grace of

the Lord " (2 Cor. xiii. 14), the baptismal formula. (S. Matt, xxviii. 19), etc. For a fuller exposition see Pearson on the Creed, a.l. OTES FOR BIBLE READIGS. 113 II.
