BACKGROUND

Organisational Environment

The aim of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law is to be a centre of excellence in
business and law, providing quality education and leadership in research for the benefit of our
graduates and the wider community. The Faculty incorporates the Schools of Business,
Economics, and T.C. Beirne School of Law at the St Lucia campus.

Faculty members have achieved numerous teaching and research awards. In addition to
outstanding academic performance, faculty members maintain close links with the public and
private sectors in Australia and internationally. Many of our faculty members have worked
extensively outside universities and held senior positions in business. A number of faculty
members have, and continue to play, leading roles within national and international
professional bodies.

The Faculty of Business, Economics and Law offers a variety of undergraduate and
postgraduate programs which allows for a wide range of specialisations or concentrations, with
a high degree of relevance to employers. Programs are designed to help students with
aspirations of becoming leaders in the "business and law" sectors to develop their expertise
and equip them for a rewarding career.

The Faculty has the highest number of international students enrolled at undergraduate and
postgraduate level in the University equating to approximately 30% of the student population.
The Faculty continues to experience significant growth in this area. International students
come from all continents and regions with over 130 countries represented. The Faculty
allocates specific resources to helping these students gain employment in their home countries
upon completion of their studies.

The Faculty Executive Dean sets the strategic direction of the Faculty in respect of its
teaching, research and external and community relations activities. The Dean is accountable
for the academic programs offered by the Faculty, and is responsible for financial, staff and
physical resources, and a range of other activities such as the development of research,
national and international marketing and the promotion of government, business and
community links. The Executive Dean is a key representative of the University to the external
community.

DUTY STATEMENT

Primary Purpose of Position

The primary purpose of this position is to evaluate Faculty and School marketing and
communication activities, and to recommend and implement strategies to promote the
programs and activities of the Faculty both within Australia and internationally to its target
markets.

Duties

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Strategic
Responsibility for the development and management of a strategic marketing and
communication plan for the Facultys target markets in consultation with the Executive
Dean, Heads of School, Faculty Senior Managers.
Contribute to the reputation building activities of the Faculty and Schools through various
strategic marketing initiatives including reviewing existing strategies and providing
recommendations to Faculty/School senior staff.

Marketing
Provide expert strategic marketing and operational advice to Senior Managers and Heads
of School in relation to marketing strategies to enhance student recruitment (domestic and
international), alumni, student and graduate relations and career services.
Initiate, design and implement strategic marketing initiatives and projects in accordance
with the Facultys Strategic Plan, coordinating both internal and external resources.
Develop and implement advertising strategies and manage advertising campaigns.
Identify and implement public relations opportunities to promote the Faculty and Schools
to raise the profile in domestic and international markets.
Coordinate the Facultys annual program of marketing activities, and manage these
activities internally within the Faculty/University and externally where necessary.
Initiate and implement strategies for promotion and advertising Faculty and School
activities, liaising with Heads of School and key marketing staff.
Increase the profile of the Faculty and its Schools by attending functions and events
organized by relevant business, education and community organisations.
Manage the media activities of the Faculty Office (and Schools as required), working
closely with OMC to ensure Faculty/School initiatives and achievements gain maximum
exposure from the press, including identifying and coordinating newsworthy stories.
Implement and manage market research data collection methods to enable strategic market
plan development and regular marketing strategy evaluation.
Represent the Faculty on University marketing committees and other committees as
necessary.
Liaise with the Facultys Advancement Director, Assistant Director, Alumni and
Community Relations, and Senior Manager International Affairs, regarding the Facultys
events strategy to enhance industry and community engagement for the Faculty both
domestically and internationally.
Coordinate international campaign and brand messages to attract prospective students to all
programs within the Faculty.

Communications/Promotional materials
Manage the design and production of all Faculty marketing and promotional materials,
both print and electronic, including materials for advertisements, alumni activities,
academic services activities, career services activities, research activities, and international
activities.
Oversee the design and maintenance the Faculty Website and associated School front pages
ensuring they are of an appropriate standard and are in accordance with the Universitys
corporate guidelines.
Coordinate accurate Faculty and School entries in University and external publications,
liaising with Faculty/School/University staff as appropriate.
Coordinate the design and production of Faculty (and School as required) marketing and
promotional materials adhering to specific University/Faculty/ School design standards and
conforming to external regulatory requirements.
Coordinate student resource materials including prospectuses, promotional items,
brochures, handbooks and information packs.
Consult with other managers within the Faculty and the Schools to optimise synergies in
relation to communications and marketing.
Coordinate external communications to ensure brand consistency of content, quality and
focus across the Faculty.

Resource Management
Manage staff within the team including conducting performance planning and review and
coordinating staff development.
Monitor workloads and distribute tasks as necessary for staff, including checking and/or
monitoring timesheets and overtime and/or allowance payments for staff within the team.
Coordinate the Facultys marketing budget, making recommendations on priorities and
expenditure.
Engage and manage external service supplier arrangements, including quality control and
financial approvals.

Other responsibilities
Attend programs and/or functions outside normal business hours as required.
Undertake other duties consistent with the above as may be required from time to time.

Reporting Relationships
The position reports to the Executive Dean, Faculty of Business, Economics and Law.


SELECTION CRITERIA

Qualifications

Completion of a postgraduate degree in marketing, communications or related discipline,
plus substantial relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience
and/or education/training.
Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. AIM, AMI).

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

A minimum of six years relevant and recent work experience in a senior marketing/public
relations role, with the ability to lead, inspire and motivate staff to ensure a high
performing team.
Understanding of the tertiary education environment and marketing tertiary courses to
students, including international students.
Extensive experience in word processing, desktop publishing packages, the web design and
multi-media communications.
Experience in developing marketing plans, formulating and managing a budget and
identifying promotional opportunities in target markets.
Strong commercial acumen and results-focused, including demonstrated skills in strategic
thinking and planning, and strong stakeholder management skills.

Personal Qualities

Well-developed organisational skills, including an ability to exercise initiative and
judgement, to work under pressure adhering to strict deadlines, to prioritise competing
workloads independently, whilst maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
Highly developed interpersonal skills, in order to work cooperatively with staff at all
levels, to liaise effectively with a variety of stakeholders and to represent the University
and Faculty in a variety of settings.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, coupled with creativity, innovation and
flair.
