Instructions for completing your assignment
Your assignment must be based on your own working practice or on examples drawn from one
or several organizations with which you are familiar.

You must show knowledge and understanding of the syllabus for this unit, including the
mandatory and recommended reading list as well as the IAM study materials.

Your assignment must address the learning outcomes, and include analysis and evaluation of
the issues and topics you discuss.

Task

You work as the facilities manager for a further education college which shares a site with the local
university. This means that while acting independently, some buildings, and the facilities to support
these, are shared.

The arrangements for facilities management are subject to a memorandum of understanding
between the two organizations. This sets out which facilities are shared; the responsibility of the
parties concerned and details the contribution by both parties to any costs when these arise.

The shared facilities include:
porterage and janitorial support
cleaning services
front office and reception activities
security within and around the buildings
car parking management
room allocations and space planning.

As the facilities manager you are employed by the further education college, but sit on a joint
committee consisting of both college and university senior managers and academics. This
committee must agree any future actions that you propose for managing facilities.

You are concerned that your role is not fully understood therefore, at the next meeting of the joint
committee you have been asked that you be allowed to produce a report to better explain facilities
management. You also see it as an opportunity to highlight some of the problems that you face in
your role.

Your report must include:
your role as the facilities manager
the relationship between business needs and space planning
the constraints and problems you face in managing room allocation
the health and safety and environmental issues which impact on your role as facilities manager
why ethics play such an important part in the management of facilities.

Guidance to Assessors: Taking a holistic approach and positive marking.

This document provides you with guidance on marking assignments. Assignments must be assessed
against the candidates level of knowledge and understanding, analysis, evaluation and
application.

To begin marking, you must initially assess a candidates work purely based on the IAM marking
criteria, (Appendix 1). This document provides you with a holistic performance profile for each
level of achievement. At this point, you need to make a preliminary judgement on the candidates
work and decide whether they fit in the pass, merit or distinction category.

The next step is to consider whether the candidate has addressed the assessment criteria. This is
done by using the marking guide to confirm and provide an overall mark. A reminder of the
marking criteria is incorporated within each assessed area in the marking guide.

Please be mindful of the fact that specific requirements may earn marks under several or all of the
cognitive categories (knowledge and understanding, analysis, evaluation, and/or application).

For example, an explanation of the role of a facilities manager is required; therefore knowledge and
understanding marks should be allocated for stating elements of this role. However analysis and
evaluation marks may be added for analytical and evaluative explanations. If the candidate
supports this explanation by referring to practical examples from organizations, application marks
should also be allocated. The marking guide for this assignment reflects this approach.

After using the marking guide, you may find the candidates actual mark does not fit within the
category you initially selected. In this case you need to decide if, as a result, you want to place the
mark into another category or, despite the details, you are confident that your original holistic
judgement was the right one. As a result of this consideration, you must enter the final grade to the
marking form, together with your comments justifying the grade. The marking form can be found in
the official policy document section in the centre login area.

Candidates must only be awarded marks for what they actually produce. At the same time,
candidates should not have marks deducted simply because points raised were not included in the
marking guide.
