Slowly pick up the stand until its bottom pin is at head height or approximately 1.80 m to 2.00 m
above the floor. Ask Derrick man to monitor the gap between travelling black and the Crown.
The drill line on the drawworks drum should be touching the toggle at this point.
If the drill line is not touching the toggle apply the parking brake and turn off the drawworks.
Without the Driller leaving the Drillers controls, have someone adjust the toggle so that it
touches the drill line on the drawworks drum.
Once this is done and all personnel are clear of the drawworks drum, proceed to pick the stand up
slowly until the COM engages and the blocks stop. Note the distance it takes to stop. Derrickman
to watch the gap between travelling block top and Crown Block at all times and alert driller if there
is a risk of contact.
Note: At this point if the COM fails to engage or malfunctions, immediately call the Mechanic to
rectify the problem.
The block travel distance from drill line contact with the toggle to blocks stopping point should not
exceed 1.2 m. At this point, the gap between the Traveling block and Crown should not be less
than 2.8 m.
When satisfied that COM is functioning properly, disengage the COM and slack the blocks until the
bottom of the tool joint is in level with the top of the tool joint of the string in the hole.
Without the Driller leaving the Drillers controls, have someone adjust the toggle so that it is
hanging vertically free downwards. Re-Set the COM.
Record test in drillers handover book and continue with normal operations.
