VICE CHAIR BANKING ELECTION LAWS FINANCE HEALTH TRANSPORTATION
July 28, 2014 Delivered Via Email The Honorable Pat McCrory Office of the Governor 20301 Mail Service Center Raleigh, NC 27699-0301 Dear Gov. McCrory: Several weeks ago, you promised to veto any legislation that fails to provide transparency in the disclosure of charter school salaries. Last week the House and Senate passed SB 793. While this bill requires that charter schools disclose the salaries of direct employees, including teachers, it creates a dangerous loophole that would allow Charter School Management Companies to take advantage of taxpayer funds by hiding payments to the very people and entities for which disclosure is most necessary. This is bad policy that inevitably will result in abuse. To put it simply, SB 793 takes North Carolina taxpayers for a ride. Charter schools were created to be laboratories of innovation for our schools. They were not created to be a get rich quick scheme for management companies at taxpayer expense. Like you, I believe that we must be wise stewards of taxpayer funds. No matter how powerful or politically connected some of those who will benefit from this loophole may be, our first loyalty is to our citizens. We cannot tolerate abuse of public funds.
