or many people these long,

hot days of summer are the
best days of the year. Long,
lazy days in the backyard, at the
lake or down the shore.
Unfortunately, summer also
brings some real dangers: Sun
burn, poison ivy, and ticks that
can ruin days, weeks and even
months of your summer. We
cant eliminate all of those dan-
gers but we do have solutions for
some of them.
POISON IVY
If youre allergic to poison
ivy (and 89% of all people are)
then you know the misery of the
itching, swelling, and blistering
that goes along with a poison ivy
attack. Poison ivy is a vicious
weed that grows all over our area.
Poison Ivy contains Urushiol oil
in its stems and on its leaves. The
Urushiol is what causes the aller-
gic reaction. Once that oil gets
on your skin it usually takes 24
hours for the bumps and itching
to start. Poison ivy is not conta-
gious once the rash breaks out,
but if you have the oil on your
hands and touch someone else, or
if your pet has the oil on her fur
and you touch your pet, the infec-
tion will spread. The oil is so
potent that even if you get it on
your shoes, clothes, or garden
tools, it can infect you for up to
five years when you touch those
tools, clothes, or shoes again.
The best way to protect
yourself from poison ivy is to
know how to identify it and if it is
growing on your property, have it
removed. Spraying an herbicide
will stop it from growing but the
Urushiol will remain active in the
dead stems and leaves for years,
leaving you prone to infection.
Weed whacking will only chop
it up and shoot the oil all over
your lawn, shoes, and legs. The
safest way to solve the problem is
to have a professional come in
and remove it. Fortunately, in
this area, Poison Ivy Gone
(PoisonIvyGone.com - (888)-
664-8966 / (888) - NO-IVY-
NOW) is a national leader in poi-
son ivy removal. Based in
Oakland, NJ, Poison Ivy Gone
serves our area and removes poi-
son ivy by hand, digging it out
beneath ground level. They will
come to your property, identify
the poison ivy, and try to deter-
mine where its coming from.
Then theyll explain the best way

I
magine if this headline
were true, alas, it is not!
New Jersey has the honor
of being the highest corporate
tax paying state in the country
and amongst the highest state
income taxes too! Were you
aware that the United States
of America has the distinction
of having the #1 highest cor-
porate tax rate of any country
in the world? With these hon-
ors, its no wonder why major
corporate entities are fleeing
both NJ and the nation, look-
ing for a lower tax rate to bol-
ster corporate profits. Obama,
stated for the record last week,
that even though it is legal for
corporations to re-domicile in
these lower taxed countries, it
would be un-patriotic to do so
and chastised them for it. So
I ask you, when is it patriotic
to pay more taxes to receive
less benefits? Why doesnt
Mr. Obama reduce corporate
tax rates, like his predecessor
Ronald Regan did, to which
the country responded by
entering the greatest econom-
ic boom period of our genera-
tion? Many businesses have
left North Jersey as their
employees cannot afford to
live here, because the combi-
nation of property and income
taxes makes it impossible to
do so. A few thousand miles
to the southwest, employees
in Texas pay no state income
tax and there are no state
imposed death taxes either.
Need I mention there is very
little snow to shovel too! No
wonder why Texas is currently
the fastest growing state and
our state is on the losing side?
With outrageous and ris-
ing property and income taxes
here, school budgets running
amuck, jobs leaving by the
thousands, property values not
increasing for ten years now,
inflation poised to rear its ugly
head, why do you stay here in
NJ? One reason might be
because you cant sell your
house now in fear of losing too
much money; another would
be because you can financially
afford to stay here in beautiful
North Jersey. We know that
NJ is so much more than the
approach to Newark Airport
along the oil tank trail of the
NJ Turnpike. When was the
last time you took a drive
through Newton, Sussex,
Hamburg or Peapack-
Gladstone to enjoy the beauty
of the scenery and marvel at
the historic homes of every
architectural variety? If you
cant remember, it has been
too long my friend. Along
with the negative NJ news
Ive just highlighted, NJ is also
one of the most beautiful
states in the nation! We must
implore our governmental
leaders to stop spending
money on programs that are
not absolute necessities and to
roll-back both income and
property taxes. If Texas can
have no income and death
tax, why should we have to
move there to enjoy the same
benefits rather than bringing
those benefits home to NJ?
Transparent Southern
Borders, Putins personal politi-
cal agenda and the Palestinian
aggression through Hamas
rockets launched into Israel, an
American ally and only demo-
cratic nation in the region,
appear to be too much for our
President to handle individu-
ally and certainly simultane-
ously. America has lost her
strength and power on both
the Executive and Legislative
branches of our federal gov-
ernment. We have taken the
position of a has been or the
lame duck nation on every
single front. Its an embarrass-
ment that we cant even bal-
ance our own checkbook, as
Congress continues to ignore
the federal deficit, further
kicking the proverbial can
down the road every time a
budget amendment approach-
es the floor. Tax-reform never
gets a front burner position
and Congressmen/women still
dont have to acquiesce to
Obamacare. (If you werent
aware, it is unconstitutional
for them to provide them-
selves with a superior plan.)
10,000 people a day are
turning 65 and will continue
to do so for the next 20 years
while simultaneously, Social
Security is nearly bankrupt.
Between, unemployment and
under employment in NJ,
the negative impact of taxa-
tion and world tensions are
destined to affect all retire-
ment portfolios; what should
one do to secure or guarantee*
their future or current retire-
ment income? I think this is a
fair question given the fact
that we havent had a major
stock market correction or
crash since 2008 and the mar-
kets have been rising steadily
since that time. To ignore the
stock and bond markets in
your portfolio design is to rel-
egate your portfolio to failure;
due to inflation as growth
must make up a major compo-
nent in any retirement plan,
even when withdrawing
income. Can an individual
accomplish both, growth of
capital while simultaneously
withdrawing a husband and
wife joint lifetime income
stream?
Ive thrown out the
guarantee* word a few times
now and was wondering if
you caught it. Let me clarify:
You can guarantee* a never
reducing, never ending pay-
check for you and your
spouse! You can guarantee*
a death benefit for your fami-
ly. You can even guarantee*
both of these features at the
same time. Additionally, you
can even guarantee* that
this never ending income
will increase over the bal-
ance of your life! The guar-
antees are backed-up by some
of the largest, highly-rated
insurance carriers in the
nation. Space does not per-
mit me to elaborate here
without the ability to hand
you a prospectus or product
brochure; suffice it to say,
there are many variations on
this theme that need to be
demonstrated and explained
in person. With that
thought in mind, I invite you
to meet with me to engage in
a no cost, no obligation con-
versation on how this can
actually be done. This pri-
vate meeting may very well
prove to offer invaluable
information that you can use
to Maximize your income
today while Protecting,
Preserving and Perpetuating
your wealth for tomorrow!
Call our office today to

look forward to meeting you
soon.

N
ew research suggests
that common ortho-
dontic problems of
people in industrialized nations
are due to their soft, modern
diets.
Dr. Noreen von Cramon-
Taubadel of the University of
Kents School of Anthropology
and Conservation tested the
theory that the transition from
a hunter-gatherer society to an
agricultural subsistence has had
an effect on growth and devel-
opment of the human skull and
lower jaw.
She found that the lower
jaw shape is related to diet,
reflecting whether populations
are primarily hunter-gatherer or
agriculturalist in nature. This
suggests that chewing behavior
causes the mandible to grow
and to develop differently in
different food-subsistence
groups, but the skull is not
affected in the same way.
The hunter-gatherer
groups had longer, narrower
mandibles, indicating more
room for the teeth to erupt cor-
rectly, while the agriculturists
and modern nations had short-
er, wider mandibles. Here, the
jaw grows too short and small
relative to the size of their
teeth, leading to teeth crowd-
ing.
Chewing behavior
appears to cause the lower jaw
to develop differently. Whats
interesting is that the rest of
the skull isnt affected in the
same way and seems to more
closely match our genetic his-
tory, said Dr. Von Cramon-
Taubadel.

S
ummer is a season
beloved by many. Warm
air, time off from school
and summer hours at the
office make the months of
June, July and August some of
the most relaxing weeks of the
year.
Unfortunately, like all
seasons, summer must eventu-
ally come to a close. But even
as summers end draws near,
there is still time to squeeze in
one last summer trip. The fol-
lowing are a few tips for trav-
elers who simply cant say so
long to summer without one
more warm weather excur-
sion.
Find a deal on lodging. You
can still find a deal on lodging
even if your end-of-summer
trip is a spur of the moment
affair. In fact, you might have
a better chance of finding a
deal if you wait until the last
minute than you would have if
you booked months in
advance. Thats especially true
if you are planning a weekend
getaway to a beachside com-
munity. Such communities
typically boast significant
inventories of summer rentals,
and recognizing that the final
weeks of summer are their last
opportunities to generate
rental income, owners of such
rentals are often inclined to
lower their prices if they have
not yet rented their units.
Renters who dont mind wait-
ing until the last minute to
book their waterfront escape
might just find that their
patience pays off with big dis-
counts.
Be flexible. Flexibility is
another friend to men and
women booking end-of-sum-
mer getaways. If you have
vacation days to spare, consid-
er traveling midweek instead
of on Friday or Saturday, as
you might find more afford-
able flights and/or lodging if
you travel on days when many
people will be in their offices.
In addition, traveling mid-
week is a great way to avoid
the traffic jams and crowded
airports and train stations that
have become a staple of sum-
mer weekend travel.
Dont stray too far. If your
trip is truly a last-minute
affair, then you might want to
set your sights on a destina-
tion thats close to home. A
last-minute flight to a land far
away can break the bank, and
booking trips at the last
minute may mean you have to
travel during off-peak hours

S
ummer is a time for fun
swimming, picnics,
baseball games, and
playing with your dog in your
freshly mowed lawn. The only
downside to summer is the
heat! For us humans its easy
to keep a tall glass of lemon-
ade around or crank the air
conditioning up to keep us
cool during these months.
But our pets dont often
have it so easy. It can be mis-
erable for your dog to be stuck
in the heat for long periods of
time with no way to keep
cool. While its obviously
preferable to keep your best
friend indoors when the
weather gets hot, sometimes
its not practical.
If you absolutely have to
keep your dog outside during
these hot months, then there
are a few simple things you
can do to keep your dog safe
and cool. You dont want to
forget these tips; they are
absolutely essential.
First off, make sure your
dog has plenty of shade. You
can build a simple pavilion
out of scrap wood and a tarp if
there is no other shade source.
Shade can make a big differ-
ence!
Also, make sure your dog
has lots of cool water. They
make great water bowls now
that can be hooked up to a
hose and that continually
refills the bowl when the
water level drops below a cer-
tain point. Its great because
your dog will never run out of
cool water!
Another super way to
keep your dog cool is to give
him access to a kiddie pool
filled with water, but this is
only for dogs that like the
water and are able to swim.
Remember: safety first! Dont
do this if you have a small,
short-legged dog that could
drown in the pool.
Finally, and one of the
best ways to keep your pet
cool during the summer, you
can get your dog a cooling dog
bed (also known as a dog cool-
ing mat). This is a great way
to make sure your dog stays
comfortable in that blistering
summer heat. And if you are
looking for a cheap dog bed, a
cooling dog bed or dog cool-
ing mat usually does not cost
too much and works great.
They require no electricity;
they work by simply dispersing
the water inside the dog cool-
ing mat when dogs lie down,
providing a cool, dry place to
sleep. Theyre made out of a
tough nylon material so that
claws wont puncture when
the dog walks across them.
Cooling dog beds are a great
way to keep your favorite pet
from suffering in the hot sum-
mer sun. These dog cooling
mats are also great for dogs
that have just gotten back
from playing outside or from
taking a doggie walk.
Remember to always fol-
low these tips when your dog
is outside in the summer. In
the end, however, the best
way to keep your dog cool is to
keep it indoors when the heat
is too much!

I was using the weed whacker in my
backyard, I knew there was a little
poison ivy, but now my arms and legs
are infected, why?
Unfortunately when you weed whack poison ivy, you are just
spraying the oil all over your feet, legs, lawn, and Weed
Whacker.

Q.

The reason that people get a
rash from poison ivy is the
Urushiol Oil that is in the plant.
Unfortunately when you weed
whack poison ivy, you are just spraying the
oil all over your feet, legs, lawn, and Weed
Whacker. That oil will stay active on tools
and clothes for up to five years. The little
pieces of chopped up poison ivy laying on
your lawn contain Urushiol and can cause a
rash on anyone who touches them.
Next time you touch your weed whacker
youre probably going to get Urushiol on
your skin again, so be careful.
Weed whacking or even mowing poison ivy
does not kill it. The poison ivy will grow
back. The danger is, once youve cut the
leaves off it becomes impossible to identify,
making you more vulnerable to infection.
Even spraying an herbicide will not protect
you from infection because the Urushiol
stays active in the dead plant for years.
The best way to protect your family from
poison ivy is to have us remove it for you.
Our technicians will identify the poison ivy
on your property, try to determine where
its coming from, and tell you the best way
to eliminate it and prevent it from returning.
We remove poison
ivy by hand because
it is the safest, most
effective way to
control and eliminate
the problem.

D
rowning is a danger
any time of the year
and wherever water is
present. Instances of drown-
ing escalate in the summer,
when more people are apt to
spend time in the pool or at
the seaside. But drowning can
occur year-round, and young
children are at the greatest
risk of drowning.
While many people are
familiar with the risk factors
that lead to drowning, many
have never heard of secondary
drowning, a related condition
that can occur hours after
leaving the water.
According to the World
Health Organization, drown-
ing is the third most common
cause of accidental death
across the globe, accounting
for almost 400,000 deaths
annually. When a person
drowns, he or she takes water
into their larynx and lungs,
which is known as aspiration.
Lack of oxygen in the body
causes bodily systems to shut
down, and cardiac arrest and
brain damage can result.
Secondary drowning,
also known as dry drowning or
delayed drowning, is a post-
immersion respiratory syn-
drome. It occurs when water
or another fluid has entered
the lungs but has not caused
enough initial trauma to
result in fatal drowning.
However, water that has got-
ten inside the lungs may cause
damage to the inside surface
of the organ, collapse alveoli
and cause a hardening of the
lungs that reduces the ability
to exchange air. The body
may also retaliate against the
foreign water by drawing more
fluid into the lungs. Over
time, the lungs will suffocate

themselves, which is why dry
drowning can occur hours
after exiting the water.
Children tend to be more
prone to dry drowning than
adults. Parents are urged to
keep careful watch over chil-
dren who experienced distress
in the water, which may have
resulted in the inhalation of
fluid. Furthermore, the chil-
dren who are most at risk for
dry drowning are those with
known breathing or lung
problems, including underde-
veloped lungs or asthma.
The following are poten-
tial indicators of secondary
drowning. Prompt action
should be taken if any of these
signs are noticed after an
adult or child leaves the
water.
Persistent cough: Anyone
who has swallowed water will
cough and sputter as the body
attempts to naturally expel
the water. But persistent
coughing that lasts long after
the water has been breathed
in may be indicative of water
aspiration in the lungs.
Confusion: Difficulty
understanding verbal instruc-
tions or not being able to form
words or thoughts may be a
symptom of dry drowning.
Pain: Chest pain is a strong
indicator of water aspiration.
Trouble breathing: Diffi-
culty breathing long after a
person has been swimming
may indicate secondary
drowning.
Lethargy: Extreme tiredness
or a sudden lack of energy may
be indicative of a problem.
Monitor for the symp-
toms of dry drowning anytime
a person swallows water. Keep
the person nearby and do not
allow him or her to go to
sleep, as some children have
died from secondary drowning
in their sleep.

to remove it, and how to pre-
vent it from coming back.
Because poison ivy is a weed
that drops seeds frequently
during the year, they also offer
maintenance plans to come
and remove any new growth
that might occur after the ini-
tial removal.
FLEAS & TICKS
Poison ivy can give you a
rash that lasts for weeks. Ticks
can give you Lyme disease that
can last a lifetime as well as six
other potentially fatal dis-
eases. Seventy five percent of
all Lyme disease cases in our
area are from tick bites that
people get on their own prop-
erty. If you have deer, mice,
squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks
or any other animals wander-
ing onto your property you
almost definitely have ticks.
In our area the most common
carrier of ticks with Lyme dis-
ease is the deer mouse, also
known as a field mouse.
To protect your family
from Lyme disease you need to
eliminate ticks from your prop-
erty. Go Organic Lawn Care

If you notice any symp-
toms of dry drowning, take
the person exhibiting those
symptoms to the hospital, as
this is not something that can
be treated at home.
According to the American
College of Emergency
Physicians, a person would
only have to inhale four
ounces of water to drown and
even less to injure his lungs
enough to become a victim of
secondary drowning.
Emergency room physicians
can remove residual water
from the lungs and administer
life-saving oxygen.
Although not all
instances of swallowing water
will result in dry drowning, it
is beneficial to understand
and learn to recognize sec-
ondary drowning symptoms so
fast action can be taken if
necessary.

M
oving is seldom easy.
But even after all of
the boxes have been
unpacked and the furniture
moved in, some of the difficul-
ty of moving remains. Much of
that remaining struggle can be
traced to adjusting to your new
environment.
Though many people set-
tle into a new residence after a
short period of time, acclimat-
ing yourself to a new communi-
ty is a taller order, especially for
those without friends or family
already entrenched in the com-
munity. The following are a
handful of ways men and
women who recently relocated
to a new community can accli-
mate themselves to their new
surroundings.
Join a local community
organization. Local community
organizations provide great
opportunities to meet new peo-
ple and learn about a town or
neighborhood. Parents may
find such organizations more
accessible, as associations that
focus on local youngsters are
quite common. Adults can join
parental organizations spon-
sored by their childrens school
or volunteer with an extracur-

the extra mile, host a casual
backyard barbecue and invite
your neighbors and their fami-
lies. Such an affair can be a
great way to break the ice and
you might just find your neigh-
bors share similar interests.
Dont be a shut-in. Comm-
unities are often home to
numerous traditions, and many
such traditions are aimed at
increasing the sense of commu-
nity within a given town.
Summer carnivals or winter
holiday balls can make for a fun
way to assimilate into a com-
munity and meet your neigh-
bors. Leave the couch and your
television behind to take
advantage of such opportuni-
ties when they present them-
selves.
Join a professional organiza-
tion. Many professionals find
the demands of their careers are
simply too great to give them
the amount of time they need
to fully assimilate into their
new communities. In such
instances, men and women
might want to join their local
professional organization,
which can help them meet pro-
fessional peers and make con-
tacts that can pay both profes-
sional and personal dividends.
If no such organization exists in
your community, consider
starting one.
The difficulty of moving is
often considered a burden on
children. But adults may strug-
gle to acclimate to a new com-
munity as well. Making that
adjustment and learning to
thrive in your new community
may require some creativity
and a little extra effort on your
part, but it can be done.

when it can be less convenient and
enjoyable to get away. If traveling far
and wide will put too great a dent in
your finances or find you dealing
with long layovers, then consider a
place closer to home so you can
spend more time relaxing and less
time traveling.
Keep it simple. The vacation of a
lifetime at the end of summer can
make for a memorable experience,
but keep in mind that end-of-sum-
mer trips are often seen as one final
opportunity to unwind and enjoy
the relaxing nature of summer. If
your trip is filled with sightseeing
and other activities, you may feel
exhausted by the time you return
and never get the last-minute
respite from the daily grind that
you were hoping your end-of-sum-
mer excursion would provide.
Pack light. While its important
to pack all of the little things you
need every day, when packing for
an end-of-summer getaway try to
pack light. If the weather figures to
be warm, you wont need to pack
any coats, jackets or even long
pants. Packing light fits the theme
of a relaxing summer getaway and
allows you to avoid waiting at bag-
gage claim or stressing out over
how to cram everyones luggage
into the trunk of your car.
End-of-summer trips make for
a great end to a beloved time of
year.

irca 1984: Back in the early
days of my business career I
felt the itch to branch out
on my own. The question was:
Doing what? I decided it would be
best if I took my newly found com-
puter skills and see if I could per-
suade anyone to hire me for part-
time work (After all, I had a full
time job).
I decided to name the company
Pellegrino Manage-ment Systems. I
loved the name and began to share
my vision with co-workers.
However, one day as I was sharing
the name with a woman I worked
with she said, Are you kidding? I
asked her why she would say that
and she responded, Take a look at
the initials of your company. When
I looked, I realized it would probably
not be a good idea to have a compa-
ny called PMS!
Purpose needs to be flushed out.
Being able to bounce ideas and
thoughts off some trusted friends can
be invaluable and save you a whole
bunch of headaches (and embarrass-
ment!).
Think about it...
Have you ever discovered
what you thought your purpose was
only to have it blown up in your
face? What if you had a strong inner
circle to act as an advisory board?
Do you think that would have made
a difference?
Do you have an inner circle
that you can trust? If not, will you
think about building one?
Joe Pellegrino is an author, speaker, radio host
