DEMONSTRATION AGAINST COMALCO:
Following discussion of future activities at the A.G.M. in april,
GAFOINZ is organising a demonstration against Comalco. Since
the last newsletter, considerable progress has been made.
Wie have been in contact with both Invercargill and Dunedin. Our
contacts there agree that it is a good idea, and as a result we
ave now been able to decide the date for the demonstration: it
tbe mela in Invercargill on the weekend of JULY 31 — AUGUST 1,
1976. We have booked four buses, three of which are planned to
leave Christchurch on Friday evening (the other will leave Fri:
morning), everyone will spend Friday night in Dunedin, Saturdey
hight in’ Invercargill and return to Christchurch on Sunday evening.
The idea at present is to have a public meeting in Invercargill
on Saturday night, and to march to the smelter itself on Sunday
mcrning. Other activities in Invercargill are being pla
‘as well as people from Christchurch, we hope to have others from
@ll over the South Island, particularly Invercargill and Dunedin.

We realise that many people who support the°cAmpaimm against
Comalco will not be able to go on the Nemonstration. One way
ou can really help is with a donation which will help lessen the
Yoaa of those who do go + the more donations, the lower the final
cost to the participants, Posters ani leafléts are another area
for which money will be needed and which is essential for an
effective campaign. Donations can be sent in using the hotton
part of the registration form. all are going into a special bank
account opened for the Comaleo campaign.

FORBIGN FISHING FLBSTS IN N.Z, Walsh:
(Comment by CaFCINZ Supporter)
# few days ago I saw an article in the "Press" that caught my
eye, It was on fishing. The article toli how uysot local fisher-
men are by the activities of Japanese and other foreign trawler
fleets off our coast. These foreign fleets pay no heed to the
N,Z. laws that govern fishing net sizes. They catch and keep
many thousands of untersized ani immature fish in nets that are
regariet vy local fishermen as of illegal sizes. small young
fish are not able to avoid these nets, Total depletion of our
fish resources is the inevitable result. The President of the
Commercial Fishermen's Federation, Mr B. Kenton, sail in the art-
icle that the Canterbury fleet has had its catch of tarakihi halved
this your, He said this was a direct result of the wholesale
slaughter of untersizet fish by Japanese fleets.
Depletion of fish resources in Nl.Z. waters is not only a reality
to big commercial fishermen but to the small man as well. When
i was a kid we live? practically on the beach of gackakariki.
Frequently in the summer my father would row out with a set line
Containing hooks of paua bait to catch fish. It was a ceremon~
ious occasion every nirht on the beach at dusk when everyone would
help pull in the line. an average cateh in those days was abiut
3 or 4 big schnapyer, col, kahawai and tarakihi, e was usually
too much for the one family so the catch would be shared with
neighbours, Mow, whenever I go home in the summer ani wateh our
neighbours pulling in their set line, it is considered a goot
catch if there is even one fish only. There is just no longer the
fish around,
The plundering of N.Z. fishing grounis affects us all. Yet we
cannot rely on the Government to do anything about it. While
Teelani and various South american countries were taking steps to-4~
protect their fish, the Labour Govt did nothing, ant now Multoon
Tettfering access to our waters to anyone who will buy our meat
ant wool. 80 it's all left up to us. he fishermen and the
ordinary New Zealaniers will have to foree the Yovernment into
taking action.

ful collection of signatures for a petition opyosing nuclear
warships in our ports, Further action ~ in co-ordination with

SEMINAR ON MBTHODS OF ASSSAKCH & HOW TO USE Tis aisuLes:

keeping files on various subjects, To help improve this work,
we have decite? to organise a seminar on methota of researching.
This will be iirectel by Owen Wilkes, who is hirhly skilled in
this work, with assistance from vete’Iusk ani one or two newspaper
reporters (from whom we can learn methols of handling the news
melia); and we expect that many others who come will be able to
ocntribute some experience as well.
