Ninety sex workers most of them are Mon from Mon state were rescued fromThailand and four of them died of HIV while eight of them have suffered from HIVpositive, thank to secret social workers organizations base in southern Thailandincluding Mon Buddhist Monks.“They have deeply cried after they knew their real situation which cannot be changedand they felt much more depression,” Ko Minn Pain, a social worker from socialfoundation said. “Uncle, I want to call to my parent in Burma and I want to hear theirvoice,” one of the ethnic Mon from twelve of them said. It means she want to tell toher parent about her real life or real situation from hospital before she die.According her witness of situation, Thai human traffickers gang sold her to motelwhere she spent time since last year and she got HIV virus after five months. She saidher human smugglers or human traffickers from Burma did not know that situation.
She just wants to blame on Thai human trafficker gangs. The Thai national gangsseparated between young girls with others and sold the girls to motel with high priceto work as sex workers.“We negotiated with a sex industry in Ranong,and save 28 sex workers and we saveanother four secretly,” A Mon Buddhist monk told to Kaowao.Most of young Mon girls who were to sex industries recently are from Mudone,Thanbyuzayat(Zopbu in Mon) and ye( Ree) township, Mon state. And they said thattheir human traffickers and parents from their area did not know about their realsituation in Thailand.The two HIV victims are young Mon girls from Kropi (Kroak Poay) village andTaungpalu (Tongphalut) village, Thanbyuzayt (Zopbyu) township and another onefrom Ye township who died while talking with the monk in the hospital. Theorganizations arrange for the girls to go back to their area.“ We felt too sick and we cannot live long. We cannot eat and drink because we aretoo pain of the sickness. We felt too bad to live than to dies, uncle,” another girl fromnative Ye township told to KW reporter.Some girl wanted to go back to their native villages but felt disgrace to their familyand instead wanted to receive medical treatment in a hospital in Thailand. They wantto die in Thailand rather than go back to their family.The social organizations led by Thai and some of members are Mon migrant Buddhistmonks. About 11,000 Burmese refugees in Malaysia including Chin, Mon, Shan and Kachinwere recognized by the United Nations Higher Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)in 2009, making them eligible for resettlement in third countries.Of the total, Chin numbered about 5,000 people; Mon, 1,800; followed by Kachin andShan at about 1,000 and other ethnic groups. Arakan were not recognized this year.It was first time the UNHCR recognized such a large number of Burmese refugees.Burmese refugees experienced difficulties earlier this year when Thailand launched acrackdown on illegal Burmese migrants attempting to enter the country from theMalaysia-Thai border, said a member of the Alliance of Chin Refugees (ACR).
According to ACR, about 50,000 Chin currently live in Malaysia. An estimated20,000 Chin have been granted UNHCR refugees status in Malaysia since 2001.Nai Roi Mon, an official with the Mon Refugee Office (MRO) in Malaysia, told TheIrrawaddy on Wednesday that it processed about 3,000 Mon for UNHCR refugeestatus.According to the MRO, no Mon were granted refugee status in 2007, and only 500were recognized in 2008.“They have given favorable recognition to children under age 18, especially fromfamilies with many children, but no husband. They also favor older men, over 50, aswell,” he said.There are about 20,000 Mon living in Malaysia, many illegally, according to theMRO.“If you have an UNHCR card, if you are arrested the UNHCR can help you duringdetention. This is an advantage for people who work here,” he said.Burmese refugees recognized by the UNHCR may wait for up to one year or longerfor resettlement to third countries.About 500,000 Burmese migrants work in Malaysia, legally and illegally, accordingto the Kuala Lumpur-based Burma Workers’ Rights Protection Committee.At the end of October 2009, about 67,800 refugees and asylum-seekers wereregistered with the UNHCR in Malaysia, according to the UNHCR.Of those, 62,000 are refugees from Burma, comprising 28,100 Chin, 16,100 Rohingya,3,700 Burmese Muslims, 2,900 Kachin and other ethnic minorities.The UNHCR said a large number of Burmese refugees remain unregistered. Therefugee community estimates that unregistered refugees and asylum-seekers couldnumber 30,000 people.Burmese refugees living in Thailand continue to relocated to Malaysia to apply forrefugee status. Many pay 18,000 Thai baht (US $500) or more to enter the countryillegally.The Malaysian government has cooperated with the UNHCR on humanitariangrounds since 1975 even though Malaysia has not signed the UN Convention ProtocolRelating to the Status of Refugees.Burmese refugees have been sent to third countries including the United States,Canada, Australia, France, New Zealand, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Norway.http://irrawaddy.org/article.php?art_id=17341
