STRASBURG OUTDUELS HAMELS AND NATIONALS SALVAGE SERIES SPLIT

For the 2nd time in a month, Stephen Strasburg pitched the Nationals past the Phillies, 4-0, by outdueling fellow-San Diegan Cole Hamels on Sun. at Nationals Park...
Washingtons win salvaged split of the 4-game seriesin his 4th matchup with
Hamels in less than 15 months, Strasburg (7.0 scoreless inn., 10 K) lowered his ERA
in these matchups to 1.03 (3 ER/26.2 IP) and his Nationals claimed their 3rd win...
Washington posted consecutive shutouts for the first time since April 13 (W2-0 Apr.
1 vs. MIA, W3-0 Apr. 3 vs. MIA) and shut out PHI in back-to-back games for the first
time...Denard Span posted 2 hits, a walk, one RBI, 2 stolen bags and he scored a run.

BALTIMORE ORIOLES
By debuting with their current clubs earlier this season, Nate McLouth
and Steve Lombardozzi became the 21st and 22nd players to play for
both the Nationals and Orioles (for the complete list entering the 2014
season, see page 140 of the Nationals Media Guide)...the 2 clubs have
also shared 2 managers (F. Robinson, D.Johnson) and 3 coaches...Buck
Showalter managed Matt Williams for 2-plus seasons while skippering the Diamondbacks...together, they helped ARI claim the NL West
Championship in its 2nd season and become earliest expansion club to
win a division title...the D-Backs 35-win increase from 1998 (65 victories) to 1999 (100) was the 2nd-largest one-year jump in MLB history.

ABSOLUTE ZERO
In Sun.s 4-0 win, Stephen Strasburg (7.0 scoreless innings) combined with Tyler
Clippard and Rafael Soriano (1.0 scoreless inning each) on Washingtons 13th shutout, which matched the Nationals (2005 - pres.) single-season team mark set initially during the 12 NL East Championship campaign.
7.0 HEAVEN
Since the beginning of July, Steve McCattys starting pitchers have lasted 7.0+
innings in 18 of 27 contests (66.7%)...not surprisingly, Washingtons bullpen has
worked the 2nd-fewest innings (68.1) in MLB dating to July 1 (DET, 64.2).
TOP HEAVY
Winners of 19 of 30, Washington (60-49, .550) leads the NL East by 3.5 games...in
the race for the NLs top record, 7 clubs are within 5.0 games of the Dodgers (6349, .563): Washington (-1.5), MIL (-2.0), SFG (-2.5), STL (-3.0), PIT (-3.5), ATL (-5.0).
DAYS OF RESIDENCY
Utilizing win percentage, the Nationals have spent 55 days in first place, including
44 days with sole possession of the NL Easts top spot, this year (per Elias Sports).
RIVALRIES RENEWED
The Nationals (22-18, .550 against NL East in 2014) are in the midst of a heavy stretch
of intradivision contests, as 9 of their next 10 games will come against a cross-section of NL East rivals (3 against the Braves, 6 against the Mets)...the exception: tonights one-off against BAL (game was rescheduled due to a July 8 washout in DC).
36 of Washingtons final 53 games this season will be played against NL East foes.
PATENT THAT LEATHER
Matt Williams Nationals have played errorless baseball in 40 of 50 games (80%)
dating to June 7...in that 8-week span, the Nationals pace MLB with a .993 fielding
percentage...the Mariners (.991) and Orioles (.990) rank 2nd and 3rd, respectively.
The Nationals error totals by month: Mar./Apr. (26), May (20), June (8), July (10).
KEEPING SCORE ON THE SEASON
The Nationals lead the NL (3rd in MLB) run differential at +80 (458 for, 378 against)...
MLBs top 5: OAK (+164), LAA (+87), Washington (+80), SEA (+54), LAD (+53).
SCORE 4 = WIN MORE
The Nationals are 51-6 when scoring 4 or more runs and, conversely, just 9-43 when
limited to 3 or less runs by opposing pitchers.
SERIES BUSINESS
Dating to May 30, Washington is 12-3-3 (win-loss-tie) in series play, and 35-22 (.614)
overall...3 of the 12 series wins were sweeps (3-0 vs. PHI, 2-0 vs. HOU, 3-0 vs. COL)...
the Nationals home-and-home set with BAL is considered one series for this note.
STOP THIEF!
Nationals catchers pace MLB having gunned down 23 of 64 (35.9%) would-be basestealers this year (pitcher caught stealings excluded)...the Cardinals (19 of 56,
33.9%) currently rank a close 2nd behind Washington...in 13, the Nationals ranked
29th throwing out 14 percent (15 of 110) of would-be basestealers.
ATTENTION SPAN
Denard Span has reached base safely via hit or walk in 29 straight games dating to
June 28, going 42-for-112 (.375) with 4 doubles, 6 RBI, 19 walks, 23 runs scored and
10 stolen bases without being caught...his 29-game on-base percentage: .462.
Span 29-game run is currently the longest such streak in MLB, the 9th-longest in
MLB this year and tied for the 3rd-longest in Nationals history:
