The Algonquins

The Algonquian family surrounded t he Iroquois on every side, and ext ended west ward
t oward t he RockyMlount ains, where one of t heir famous ofFshoot s, t he Blackfeet , gained a
not oriet y which has rendered t hem t he heroes of many a boyish t ale. They were milder t han t he

Iroquois, and less Spart an in habit s. Their west ern dIvision comprised t he Blackfeet , Arapaho
and Cheyenne, sit uat ed Iiear t he east ern slope of t h Rocky Mount ains . t he nort hern division,

sit uat ed fo t he most part t o t he nort h of t he St . La wrence, comprised t he Chippeways and Crees ; t he nort h-east ern division embraced t he t ribes inhabit ing Quebec t h Marit ime Provinces, and Maine, including t he Mont agiiais and Micmacs ; t he cent ral division, dwelling in Illinois,

Wiscons;Indiana, Michignl and included t he Foxes, Kickapoos, Ohio included t he Foxes,
KIckapoos, Menominees, and ot hers, and t he east ern dIvision embraced all t he Algonquiam t ribes
t hat dwelt along t he At lant ic coast , t he Abnaki, Narraganset s, Nipmucs, Mohicans (or

Mohegans), Shawnees, Delawares, aiid Powhat ans.
The AIgonquians were t he first Indians t o come int c cont act wit h t he whit e man. As a rule
t heir relat ions wit h t he Erench were friendly, but t hey were frequent ly at war wit h t he English

set t lers. The east ern branch of t he race were quickly defeat ed and scat t ered, t heir remnant s
wit hdrawing t o Canada and t he Ohio valleyy. Of t he smaller t ribes of New England, Virginia and
ot her east ern st at es t here are no living represent at ives, and even t heir languages are ext inct ,
save for a few words and place names. The Ohio valley t ribes wit h t he Wyandot s, formed

t hemselves int o a loose confederacy and at t empt ed t o preserve t he Ohio as n Indian boundary;
but in 1794 t hey were forced t o cede t heir t errit ory. Tecumseh, an Algonquin chief carried on a
fierce war against t he Unit ed St at es for a number of years, but by his defeat and deat h at
Tippecanoe in 18 I I t he spirit of t he Indians Was broken, and t he year I8I5 saw t he
commencement of a series of Indian migrat ions west ward, and t he wholesale cession of Indian
t errit ory whichi ccont inued over aperiod of about t hirt v years.
