NCPTT Announces New Employ-ees, Promotion
I
n spring 2005, NCPTT announcedthe addition o three new mem-bers to its sta and one promotion.The new sta members include Ja-son Church, materials conservator;Dr. David Morgan, archeology andcollections chie; and Sarah Jackson,materials research assistant. Addi-tionally, Andy Ferrell was promotedto the position o architecture andengineering chie. He joined NCPTTin 1999 and was previously archi-tecture and engineering researchellow.
NCPTT Receives Honor Awardrom National Trust

t the National PreservationConerence in September,NCPTT was presented an HonorAward or its part in developingand distributing publications thatencourage responsible growth inAmerican towns and cities, alongwith inormation on policies to os-ter cost and energy ecient schoolbuildings.The Center worked with theEnvironmental Protection Agency(EPA) and the Council or Educa-tional Facility Planners International(CEFPI) on this project. AIC Recognizes NCPTT with Dis-tinguished Service Award
T
he American Institute or Con-servation o Historic and Artis-tic Works (AIC) presented NCPTTwith an Award or Advancemento the Field o Conservation. AICDirector Tom Chase presented theaward to NCPTT Executive DirectorKirk Cordell during the AIC annualmeeting in June, 2005.

The program has alsocontracted with other governmentagencies to provide specic researchin problem areas and has conductedinvestigations in partnership withother laboratories.The well-established Architec-ture and Engineering program hasstrengthened its existing activities asit develops new initiatives. Proes-sional development or engineers inhistoric preservation continues to bea high priority; the Summer Instituteprovides an intensive training course.NCPTT signed a new ve year co-operative agreement that will enablethem to continue work with theAIA Historic Resources CommitteePreservation Education Task Forcein integrating the teaching o historicpreservation into the main stream o architectural education. Issues suchas sustainability and smart growthcontinue to occupy a signicant placein the program.The impact o the Center’sactivities and programs are nowrecognized around the country andaround the world. The programsdiscussed above plus those in heri-tage landscapes, heritage educationand research grants all have contrib-uted to this success. NCPTT conducts preservation technol-ogy research
NCPTT undertakes research at its in-houselaboratories, which include an environmentalchamber that allows researchers to test theeects o pollutants on cultural materials. Morewidely, the Center stimulates new researchthrough its nationwide grants program.
NCPTT provides grants, creates partner-ships
NCPTT maintains a broad partnership basethat includes National Park Service sites;other ederal agencies; state and tribal historicpreservation oces; universities; privatecorporations; and local, state, national andinternational non-prot organizations. TheCenter provides direct and competitive grantsto promote research and training opportunitiesin preservation technology.
NCPTT serves as a trainer and convener
The Center develops and conducts regionalseminars and workshops on topics likecemetery monument conservation. NCPTTpromotes excellence in preservation bypromoting historic preservation training andeducation opportunities or proessionalsthrough projects like the NCPTT PreservationEngineers Initiative.
NCPTT serves as a Clearinghouseand Web Portal
NCPTT’s website and publications enablethe Center to deliver the latest news aboutpreservation technologies to a variety o audiences. Also, NCPTT supports thedistribution o preservation inormationthrough its grants and partnerships.
NCPTT teaches preservation or uturegenerations
Heritage Education – Louisiana conveys toour youngest citizens the power o place andthe stories behind our irreplaceable treasures.The program administers competitivemini grants and holds teacher workshopsto enhance the educational experience byteaching students the value o their localheritage. The program also serves as a nationalmodel or heritage education.

CPTT advances theapplication o science andtechnology to historicpreservation. Working in theelds o archeology, architecture,landscape architecture andmaterials conservation, theCenter accomplishes its missionthrough training, education,research, technology transer andpartnerships.NCPTT was created byCongress in 1992 todevelop and disseminatepreservation technologies andto train practitioners in newtechnologies. NCPTT promotespreservation in the elds oarcheology, historic architecture,historic landscapes, and materialsconservation.NCPTT emphasizes preservationtechnology research. Wesupport the use o innovativetechnologies in the preservationo cultural properties and thetranser o technology romarenas not readily identiedwithin historic preservation.The Center has adopted theseresearch priorities:
