NCPTT conducts preservationtechnology research
NCPTT undertakesresearch at its in-houselaboratories, whichinclude an environmentalchamber that allowsresearchers to test theeects o pollutants on cultural materials.More widely, the Center stimulates newresearch through its nationwide grantsprogram.
NCPTT provides grants, createspartnerships
 NCPTT maintains a broad partnershipbase that includes National Park Servicesites; other ederal agencies; state and tribalhistoric preservation oces; universities;private corporations; and local, state,national and international non-proftorganizations. The Center provides directand competitive grants to promote researchand training opportunities in preservationtechnology.
NCPTT serves as a trainer andconvener
The Centerdevelops andconductsregionalseminars and workshopson topics like cemetery monumentconservation. NCPTT promotes excellencein preservation by promoting historicpreservation training and educationopportunities or proessionals throughprojects like the NCPTT PreservationEngineering Initiative.
NCPTT serves as a Clearinghouse andWeb Portal
NCPTT’s website and publications enablethe Center to deliver the latest news aboutpreservation technologies to a variety o audiences. Also, NCPTT supports thedistribution o preservation inormationthrough its grants and partnerships.
NCPTT teaches preservation forfuture generations
NCPTT’s Heritage Education programconveys to our youngest citizens thepower o place and the stories behind ourirreplaceabletreasures.Theprogramadministerscompetitivemini grants and holds teacher workshopsto enhance the educational experience byteaching students the value o their localheritage. The program also serves as anational model or heritage education.

CPTT advances theapplication o scienceand technology to historicpreservation. Working inthe elds o archeology,architecture, landscapearchitecture and materialsconservation, the Centeraccomplishes its mission throughtraining, education, research,technology transer andpartnerships.NCPTT was created byCongress in 1992 to developand disseminate preservationtechnologies and to trainpractitioners in newtechnologies. NCPTT promotespreservation technologies inthe elds o archeology, historicarchitecture, historic landscapes,and materials conservation.NCPTT emphasizes preservationtechnology research. The Centersupports the use o innovativetechnologies in the preservationo cultural properties and thetranser o technology romarenas not readily identiedwithin historic preservation.The Center is located in Lee H.Nelson Hall on the campus oNorthwestern State University inNatchitoches, Louisiana.

This publication studies three monitoring systems and eorts to eliminate termitesat San Cristobal and El Morro o the San Juan National Historical Site in Puerto Rico.Populations o
Coptotermes havilandi 
and
Heterotermes
sp. were detected andquantied using underground monitoring stations, aboveground monitoring stationsand an acoustic emission detector reading.This study tests hexafumuron baits such as those used to eliminate termite populationsin previous NCPTT-sponsored research on Liberty Island at the Statue o Liberty NationalMonument. This study evaluates these baiting systems over a much wider area.

This report details the development o I-Sites, a database-driven website that providespublic and proessional access to the Iowa State File, a master inventory o the state’srecorded archeological sites. The project’s goal was to contribute to resolving the needto keep preservation-related databases current with existing and new discoveries byallowing archeologists in the eld to update the site.Among the topics covered in this report are methods and materials, hardware andsotware development, unctionality, data entry, security and longterm management.

Like I-Sites, this project seeks to develop a comprehensive database o research accessiblevia the World Wide Web. Included in the database is IRUG’ s continuing collaborativecollection o high quality inrared reerence spectra and an online bibliography o spec-troscopic and related literature, a discussion orum and links to technical resources.This report includes detailed examples o website eatures as well as inormation on howthe project was structured and implemented.
