Namesarethendrawnbyhos-pitalemployeeswhoprovidegifts,whicharethenpresentedbyWellnessHouse.MissMaranvillesaidsheisprivilegedtohavethebestpartofthearrangement.“Igetthegloryofseeinghowhappythepeopleare,”MissMaran-villecommented.“It’ssadthatthosewhoboughtthegiftscan’tseetheotherendoftheirgiving.Indmyselfinagreatlittleplace.”MissMaranvilleiswell-qualiedforherpositionofoverseeingmedicalanddentalservices.OriginallyfromNi-agaraFalls,N.Y.,sheisareg-isterednurse,graduatingfromGeorgeMasonUniversityinVirginia,whotaughtsurgicalnursinginMarylandfor22years.HermovetoSouthCaro-linacamein1993.“Iweighedtheprosandcons.IwastiredofMaryland;Iwastiredofthecold,”sheexplained.Charles-tonbecameadestinationmainlybecauseshehadaclosefriend,whosehusbandwasintheNavy,livinghere.MissMaranvillecontinuestobeenormouslypleasedwithherchoice.Herhomeisdown-towninthehistoricoldcity,soshecommuteseachdaytotheisland.“Ihavetocrossthreebridgestogettohere.It‘swa-ter,watereverywhere,”MissMaranvillesaidaboutthearea.TwoyearsaftermovingtoCharleston,MissMaranville joinedOurLadyofMercy,whichhadbeenstartedbytheSistersofCharityofOurLadyofMercy,theorderthatorigi-nallyestablishedSt.FrancisXavierHospitalinCharlestonin1824.Theordersoldthehospi-talin1989,anditwasinthatsameyearthesisters,seekinganotherministry,beganthecommunityoutreachontheislands.Thecharity,whosedirectorisSisterMaryJoseph,stillmaintainsarelationshipwiththehospitalasindicatedbytheChristmasproject.ThedentalphaseofWell-nessHouse’sserviceprovidesthefullrangeoftreatmentex-ceptrootcanalsandcrowns.Afull-timedentistisonthestaff,andheishelpedbyeightvol-unteerdentistsfromthecom-munity.Inaddition,17dentistsdonatetheirtimeonarotatingbasistotakecareofwalk-inpatients.Asanindicationofthecaseload,sinceJuly,theclinicsaw780dentalpatientsandperformed2800procedures.Thepre-natalandmidwifepracticewaslikewisebusyduringthesameperiod,serv-ingtheneedsof300womenandperforming1,400proce-dures.DeliveryoftheislandclientsisperformedattheMedicalUniversityofSouthCarolina.Thesearefolkswhohavenoinsurance,arenoteli-gibleforMedicaidandcannotaffordtopayfortheirtreat-ment.Theexpandingmedicaloutreach,MissMaranvillepointedout,causedWellnessHousetomovefromadouble-widemodularbuildingtoanew5,000-square-footstruc-ture.Unlikemoreregimentedorgovernmentalservices,WellnessHousedoesnotscreenitsclientsforeligibility.“It‘samatteroftrust,”MissMaranvillesaid.Theorganiza-tionasksonlyfortheclient’snameandaddress,acceptingasafactthattheindividualwouldnotbetherefordentist-ryorgynecologyservicesifheorshedidnotneedthehelp.OurLadyofMercy-nancesitscharitableservicesbyvariousmeans.ItholdsanauctioninJanuaryandagolftournamentinSeptember.Ad-ditionally,thesistersleftanendowment,andtherearepri-vatedonations.“Peopleareverygenerous,”MissMaran-villeremarked.Thepopulationofthethreeislandsisdiverseethni-cally,raciallyandeconomical-ly.Manyfamilieshavelivedontheislandsforgenerations,includingthoseofthestoriedGullahculture.Thoughpov-ertyisbynomeansuniversal,James,John’sandWadmalawallhavetheirshareofpeoplewhoneedthekindofservicesthecommunityoutreachpro-vides.MissMaranvilleat65en- joysherworkandhasnoim-mediateplanstoretire,butsheadded,“Idon’texpecttobedoingthiswhenI’m70.”Reectingonherpast,MissMaranvillenotedthatinthebeginningofhernurs-ingandteachingcareer,sheworkedextensivelywithmi-norities,whichmayhavepre-guredthewayherprofes-sionallifewouldconclude.“IthinkIkindofevolved,”shesaid.“Ihavecomefullcircle.”Thatcirclehascometoem-braceanever-presentneed.Onadailybasis,dentalpatientsandexpectantmoth-ersfromtheislandscometoknowthegoodworkofMissAnnetteandheroutreachor-ganization.AndnowthatDe-cemberishere,shewillsoonhaveahandinmakingChrist-masaspecialtimeforquiteanumberofislandfolks.
