Toni Lyngtonilyng@ncolonie.org11/4/2009SJHStechnology based The objective is to provide a real world way to help students buildbetter writing and communication skills in today’s technology-driven world and to get excited about doing it. CBS 6, one of ourlocal news stations, is currently working on an education blog ontheir website. They are interested in working with school districtsto provide a window into what is going on in schools in the area.Principals, teachers and students could participate in videoblogging about various topics including: changes in educationover the years, new technology being used in the classrooms, lesson plan tips, cool projects, things parents need to know aboutlife in the classroom, what makes a big district run smoothly, howa teacher helped a student understand something, what helpstudents need from their parents and so many more. Technology:Standard 2—Students will access, generate, process, and transferinformation using appropriate technologies.Standard 6—Interconnectedness-Common Themes—Students willunderstand the relationship and common themes that connect toother areas of learning.English Language Arts:Standard 2—Students will write and speak for expression.Standard 3—Students will write and speak for critical analysis andevaluation.Standard 4—Students will write and speak for social interaction.

Initially I would like to start this as a club where possibly 20-30students might be affected at the junior high level. As I amcurrently part time, I would love to implement this in a full-timeclassroom setting as a part of an ongoing writing unit. At thatpoint about 100 students will be affected at the 7th or 8th gradelevel. If this were to begin as a video blogging club, students with aninterest in writing opinion pieces would be welcome. During theclub session, I would introduce, model and instruct students onthe proper way to develop blog writing. Students would be givenvarious topics to write about involving the school and its climateeach week. We would come together each week to share andedit the blogs and post them on the website via webcam.Again, initially, since this would begin strictly as a club, theevaluation would consist of how the students were enjoying it(attendance and enthusiasm for the club) and number of hits thevideo blog receives on the CBS6 website. Once the program is inthe classroom, all writing pieces would be evaluated throughteacher and peer grading as well.  This could be easily shared with colleagues during facultymeeting or on a professional development day. I also think thisproject would create a great deal of “buzz” throughout the schooland in the community since it would be published on a popular,heavily-visited news website. It would be a fantastic way to getteachers in all halls, parents and even community involved inwhat is going on at North Colonie. It could provide additionalexcellent PR for our district.Ideally a laptop (unless one is available for me through school)and webcam would be needed.webcam will be provided by WRGB

This program would be usedin the kitchen with small groups and individual students. The useof the Personal Trainer Cooking program that is developed for theNintendo DS is an interactive program. It allows the teacher andstudents to incorporate geography, math, reading and otherfunctional daily living skills into food preparation. Some of the objectives include:Student listening and following directionsStudent learning and using commandsStudent being able to correspond geography of country to typesof foods (ie Italy- tomato sauce with pasta)Student making list of essentials needed for cooking specific itemand going to the store to purchase. The objectives would also be in the area of math, writing andreading.
