Jeremiah 3 (NIV)

1 “If a man divorces his wife
and she leaves him and marries another man,
should he return to her again?
Would not the land be completely defiled?
But you have lived as a prostitute with many lovers—
would you now return to me?”
declares the Lord.

Jeremiah 3 (NIV)

and she leaves him and marries another man,
should he return to her again?
Would not the land be completely defiled?
But you have lived as a prostitute with many lovers—
would you now return to me?”
declares the Lord.

JEREMIAH 3 COMMETARYBY GLE PEASEJeremiah 3 (IV)1 “If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him and marries another man, should he return to her again? Would not the land be completely defiled? But you have lived as a prostitute with many lovers—  would you now return to me?”declares the Lord.
It was out of the question that a divorced woman who remarried would ever return to her first husband. He would be disgraced by taking her back, and it would bring shame on the whole nation to allow such a thing. But this brings forth a terrible dilema, for Israel was God's wife and he divorced her, and she did go a marry other gods in adulterous behavior. How in the world is Israel, God's own chosen people, ever to be restored after such adultery? That is the issue being dealt with in this chapter. Is it possible for a prostitute to be restored as a wife again? Deut. 24:4 makes it clear this was never to happen, for God forbids it. If God's grace and mercy do not rise above his own law, his people are forever abandoned and lost as his chosen ones. God had every right and  justification to forsake his people permanenly. The good news is that God is not limited to his own law for humans. He can and does rise above it and do what he forbids humans to do. The result is, there is hope for prostitute Israel to become again the faithful wife of Jehovah. What is not possible with men is possible with God.

2 “Look up to the barren heights and see. Is there any place where you have not been ravished?By the roadside you sat waiting for lovers, sat like a nomad in the desert. You have defiled the land with your prostitution and wickedness.
God paints the worst possible picture of how awful his adulterous wife became. She was nothing but a common slut, seeking affairs with the enemy on every level. It might be on the heights where idols were worshiped with immorality, or it might be like a prostitute waiting on the roadside to be picked up and ravished by a stranger. God's people had become harcore prostitutes.
3 Therefore the showers have been withheld, and no spring rains have fallen.Yet you have the brazen look of a prostitute; you refuse to blush with shame.
God withheld the raily season from them, and this would be a disaster, for they needed the spring rains for their crops, but in spite of this  judgment on their folly, they continued to serve and worship idols in defiance of God's will. They felt no remorse or shame for their sin, and did not even blush when they were called prostitutes. In this rebellious state they were ripe for far more serious judgment.

4 Have you not just called to me: ‘My Father, my friend from my youth,
They are living like children of the devil, and yet in bold hypocrisy they have just called God their Father and friend. They still recognize God as their God, even as they flirt and give themselves shamefully to idols. Their talk is righteous sounding, but their walk is wicked. They have not forgotten the righteous language of the good old days, but they have totally forgotten what that language meant, and what it demanded in obedience. If you heard their words only you would be thinking they are truly a people of God, but if you behold their behavior you would think them to be children of the devil. Such is the state of people whose religion is in words only and not in practice.
5 will you always be angry? Will your wrath continue forever?’This is how you talk, but you do all the evil you can.”
The people are pleading with God to let up on the judgment. They hate the penalty of their disobedience, but they do not hate the practice of it, and so they pray for deliverance while, at the same time, go on doing all they can to defy God by their evil practices. The funny thing is that they really hope to deceive God this way. They expect Him to be impressed with their language of calling Him Father and friend, and hope he does not take seriously their disobedience. It is the folly of mankind to try and deceive God by sweet talk. It is no wonder that God often hates our prayers, for he knows we are just trying to cover up our sins with sweet talk.
