School of DesignBA (Hons) Art and Design
teaching takes place through lectures,and group seminars and tutorials, aswell as one-to-one contact with tutorsin studios and workshops. Studio workis assessed by visual presentations,portfolios or other appropriatedocumentation. As you continuethrough the course, you areencouraged to develop your ownideas, strategies and ways of working.We do not impose a 'house style' uponour students, so the kind of art youmake will be the result of your owndevelopment informed by the historyand traditions of art, past andpresent.You will work with the support of staffwho are engaged in the contemporaryart world - making, exhibiting, writing,publishing, and broadcasting,nationally and internationally. You willhave direct access to this pool ofprofessional knowledge, expertise andexperience to assist you with your ownwork and professional career.
Facilities
The BA in Art and Design is locatedat the heart of the University Campusin large, well-lit, open plan studios.There are specialist workshopfacilities for: wood and metal work,including a foundry; plaster and resinwork; printmaking, including screen-printing, etching, drypoint, andintaglio processes, block,carborundum and mono print; anddigital media, including large formatcolour printing, digital photography,image and video-editing, animationand web-site design. We areparticularly well-equipped inprintmaking, painting, sculpture anddigital media.
Career destinations
On completion of this course, you willbe equipped for a range ofopportunities including art practice, orwork in the cultural sector, such asmarketing, the media and education.You may also progress to postgraduatestudy or research.

Entry requirements
The School of Design bases its offerof a place on careful consideration ofinformation provided in the UCASapplication form. Pre-A levelqualifications, including GCSEs, yourpersonal statement, and academicreference are all of importance. Goodperformance at 'A' level (orequivalent) is regarded as essential.Candidates will be invited to meetwith course tutors, and show aportfolio of practical work.You are required to have a minimumof six subjects at GCSE level to gradeC or above, including EnglishLanguage. Maths or a science subjectand Art or Design are expected. Three'A' level subjects to grades B, B, C orabove are required, including an artsubject to grade B. Equivalentqualifications may also be considered.Art and design foundation coursequalifications are welcomed as anadditional qualification to 'A' levels,but are not a requirement for entry.Applicants without standard entryrequirements will be required toattend for interview and to show theirportfolio of work. The candidate'sexperience, skills and knowledge willbe considered in relation to theacademic and practical challenges ofthe course.
