World Cinema
TheCentre for World Cinemas (CWC) is an interdisciplinarycentre for research and teaching located within the School ofModern Languages and Cultures, the largest School of ModernLanguages in the country. Teaching in the CWC emphasisesthe positive and inclusive nature of World Cinema whilstexploring its production, context and audience. Atundergraduate level, we run a Joint Honours course in WorldCinema and languages which includes a year abroad. Atpostgraduate level we offer an MA in World Cinemas andsupervisions for MA and PhD research projects in film studies.The diversity of the national cultures studied within theSchool of Modern Languages and Cultures allows our studentsto explorecinematic productions across the globe’s sevencontinents.
Joint Honours: World Cinema with a language
World Cinema is available with the following languagecombinations: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian,Japanese, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish. The coursestructure, options and electives available to you as well as thenature of your year abroad will vary depending on theconstituent language subjects. What you study
At
Level 1
,all students pursue two coremodules,
Introductionto World Cinema I & II,
involving lectures and small groupteaching to practice written and presentation skills. Thesemodules introduce students to film history(from Eisenstein andtheories of montage to cinematic realism) and film movements(including German, French and Japanese New Waves).At
Level 2
,all students build on the knowledge and skillsdeveloped at Level 1 through the coremodule
From Film Noir toAsia Extreme: Questioning Genrein World Cinema
whichexplores the ideology and implications of genre in cinema. Thewide range of optional modules at Level 2 includesPostmodernism & Cinema, Italian Cinema and German Cinema.At
Level 3
,all students take the core module
Cinema in theDigital Era
which evaluates the impact of digital filmmaking toolson cinema. The wide range of optional modules also on offer atLevel 3 (including Arab Cinema, Black and Asian British Filmand Brazilian Film) is complemented by the final yeardissertation module which gives students the opportunity toconduct research in an area of their choice.
