UNCATALOGUED SCEATTAS IN THE NATIONAL
AND OTHER COLLECTIONS
[See
Plates
VI-VII]
Since the
publication
of the B.M.
Catalogue of English
Coins
(Anglo-
Saxon),
vol.
i,
in
1887,
the National Collection has
acquired
a
further 146 sceattas. Most of these
pieces
are of
types already
in the
Catalogue,
but some are variants of known
types,
while others are
mules or
entirely
new
types
and,
in
publishing them,
I have taken
the
opportunity
to include those
uncatalogued types, variants,
and
mules which I have discovered in other
collections,
both
public
and
private. Naturally
the list cannot claim
completeness
and I would
welcome
information,
including provenances,
where
known,
of coins
of other
unpublished types.
The list is divided into four
parts: (A)
addenda to B.M.C.
,
(B)
mules, (C)
variants of B.M.C,
types,
and
(D)
new
types.
Part
(A)
is
confined to coins
acquired by
the B.M. since the
Catalogue
was
pub-
lished,
while Parts
(B), (C),
and
(D)
include coins in other collections
as well as in the B.M. In Part
(D)
the
types
are numbered consecu-
tively
from 55 to 76
(B.M.C, ending
at
type 54),
whether the coins
in
question
are in the B.M. or not.
There also exist sceattas of B.M.C,
types,
but with either obverse
or reverse or both sides reversed
-
2c
(obv.),
4
(obv.),
5
(obv.),
6
(obv.),
49
(rev.),
and 44
(both sides).
Such a reversal of
type
is not
regarded
here as a variant and therefore these
pieces
will not be found in
Part
(C)
of this
paper,
nor will coins
showing
minor differences from
the norm
-
3 a
(no
cross on
obv.),
276
(
? branch before obv.
bust),
and
42
(branch,
instead of bird or
cross,
before obv.
bust).
It
may
be useful to note here a few
points
in which the
catalogue
errs or which seem to have
gone
unnoticed.
(i) Type
36,
no.
53,
is not of that
type
but is a crude version of
type
11.
(ii) Type
5,
no.
65,
is a coin of
type
4.
(iii) Type
7 : the obv. and rev. have been
transposed.
The so-
called
"
stalks of corn" are
actually
vine-branches.
(iv)
The man with crosses and the female centaur
types
are
described as
being
"helmeted": in each case the "helmets"

UNCATALOGUED SCEATTAS 93
are
merely stylistic representations
of the hair and nose. The
latter is also described as
"
winged",
whereas
actually
she
holds two
palm-branches.
(v) Type
10: the "traces of letters
(? runes)"
on the obv. are
shown on other
specimens
to read
{Apa).
(vi) Types
24a and 28 are
Merovingian
-
Auxerre and Poitiers
(city), respectively.
(vii) Types
11, 25, 26, 29a,
and 296 seem to have affinities of
style
and/or type
with the
Merovingian,
rather than the
English,
series.
(viii) Type
31 has been shown to be
possibly
Frisian in
origin
(Sutherland
in
N.C., 1942,
p. 66).
(ix) Types
2c and 50
(which
is
possibly
a coin of
2c) may
be
Frisian
copies
of
English
runic coins
(type
50 is
given
as
"
?
Merovingian"). Types
8, 30a,
and 306
may
also be
Frisian.
For
having permitted
their coins to be described I should like to
