STORY

AMISOM newly deployed Ugandan Formed Police Unit officers have been
challenged to work towards enhancing rule of law and order in Somalia as they
embark on their tour of duty.

The call was made as a total of 140 police officers completed 7 days of training
which focused on advancing their understanding of the mission mandate, dealing
with cultural diversity, media relations and human rights, among others.

Their main duties will include operational support to the Somali Police Force,
guarding vital AMISOM installations and escorting AMISOM and Somali Federal
Government civilian personnel in their conduct of their duties, among others.

Speaking during the pass out ceremony, the AMISOM Police Commissioner
Anand Pillay tasked the officers to address the massive challenges especially in
engaging communities to support efforts at enhancing security.

The people that we need to do this and assist in ensuring safety in Mogadishu, is
yourself and the other FPUs from Nigeria. We need you desperately to try and
resolve the problems the community is facing here with regards to insecurity,
attacks on innocent people as well as the prominent people in Mogadishu, he
said.

The acting Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union
Commission for Somalia Hon. Lydia Wanyoto Mutende emphasized the
importance of the role of police officers, not just in restoring law and order but
empowering the Somali Police Force and communities to avoid crime.

The military Component have been able to weaken, devastate and even chase
away the al-Shabaab. What remains now is to rebuild the community. It is to
rebuild the people, to create law and order and thats why you are here to help
us create and develop law and order, to help us do the community policing, to
mobilize the community, to understand how they resolve conflicts and it is not
an easy job because you are now going to rebuild the war of the mind, he said.

The officers pledged to contribute positively to improving the security situation
in Somalia.

We are ready to protect and defend the mission mandate and raise the Ugandan
and African Union flags higher and higher, said Senior Superintendent
Bamuzibire Samuel, the FPU Contingent Commander.

Uganda, which first deployed police officers in the mission in 2010 has total of
210 police men and women in Somalia.
