ABSTRACT

ABSTRACTDigital Imaging and Communications in Medicine

Purpose
DICOM is a standard for handling, storing, and transmitting information in medical imaging. Itincludes a file format definition and a network communication protocol. The communication protocol isan application protocol that uses TCP/IP to communicate between systems. DICOM files can beexchanged between two entities that are capable of receiving image and patient data in DICOM (.dcm)format.
Problem and existing system
We have many healthcare centers which take care of our lives in our busy lifecycle schedule. Weconsult these healthcare centers in our lifetime when we suffer from any small disease. The doctors onlygive medicines when it is the case of fever, cold or cough, but when the case of chronic diseases likecancer or cardiac problems like heart attacks comes into picture, x-ray of the affected parts are to betaken, which help us to locate the exact position of the area. By using these x-rays either the doctors or  patients can consult other doctors for seeking their advices.Problems:i.Data is lost while transmitting x-ray from one doctor’s hand to another.ii.x- Ray format differs from one healthcare center to another.
Proposed System
DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) overcomes the above said problems.DICOM is a standard for handling, storing, printing, transmitting information in medical imaging. Itincludes a file format definition and a network communication protocol. The communication protocol isan application protocol that uses TCP/IP to communicate between systems. DICOM files can beexchanged between two entities that are capable of receiving image and patient data in DICOM format. Thus we can prevent the data from being lost.DICOM enables the integration of scanners, servers, workstations, printers and network hardware from multiple manufacturers in a picture archiving and communication system. Thedifferentdevices come with DICOM conformance statements which clearly state the DICOM classesthey support. DICOM has been widely adopted by hospitals and is making inroads in smaller applications like dentists’ and doctors’ offices.
