City started brightly and, in the 4th minute, a left-wing free-kick from a trialist
midfielder was headed just over by Hill. However, in the 8th minute, City’s Bradley
had to be alert to palm away a Teesside shot. After 10 minutes, City took the lead
from the penalty spot as new signing Coleman picked himself up after being fouled,
to convert the spot-kick.
The visitors were soon back on the offensive and Bradley saved well after 12 minutes
but he was beaten one minute later as the Teesside striker finished well to pull his side
level. City’s defence was looking more vulnerable than at any stage so far this pre-
season and, in the 21st minute, a long ball from the right-back position dissected City’s
central defence and Bradley once again saved his side by diving on the attacker’s
shot.
In the 31st minute, Coleman’s 18-yard shot was deflected for a City corner. The kick
was cleared to the edge of the area but the trialist midfielder fired too high. Teesside
wasted a great chance after 35 minutes when the City defence stopped and waited for
a non-existent offside flag, but the striker shot horribly wide. It was only six more
minutes though before Teesside did go ahead, following a rugby tackle by Armstrong
on a visiting player. The ensuing free-kick dropped inside the City 6-yard area and
was confidently finished to make the score 2-1.
The next couple of minutes saw relentless pressure by City and it brought them a
quick equaliser. Blaylock’s shot from the edge of the area was blocked but Teesside
could not clear their lines, and the midfielder’s right-wing cross was neatly headed
into the net by Coleman, for his second goal of the game.
Within two minutes of the interval, Teesside had restored their lead, from the second
penalty of the game. There seemed to be some doubt whether Hill’s trip was inside
the penalty area or not, but referee Norden pointed to the spot, and the kick was easily
converted. City struggled to get back into the game at this point, and the visitors were
close again after 62 minutes when a lob was just over Bradley’s cross-bar. Bradley
then made a comfortable save from a free-kick just outside the City box.
It was against the run of play after 67 minutes when City equalised. Armstrong
converted the chance from 10 yards but there was some controversy as the visitors
were claiming an earlier free-kick. City then threatened again as Kilgour’s pass found
Burton running clear, but the visiting keeper kicked the ball to safety.
In the 79th minute, an excellent cross from the Teesside left was met with a shot at the
back-post and Bradley produced another fine save. The City keeper repeated his
heroics in the 90th minute with another save, after a fine move down the right from
Teesside.
