Cover Image Description
The cover shows a positron emission tomography (PET) imageof a human brain. Blood flow to a particular brain area, theamygdala, increases when a cocaine addict experiences cravingsfor the drug. The image, when compared to those taken of non-addicts, reveals that just eliciting memories of drug abuse in acocaine addict is sufficient to cause changes in brain activity.
