Programme of Action (PoA), 1992 under the NationalPolicy on Education (NPE), 1986 envisaged conduct of acommon entrance examination on all India basis foradmission to professional and technical programmes inthe country. For admission to Engineering andArchitecture/Planning programmes, Government of Indiavide Resolution dated 18th October 2001 has laid down aThree – Exam Scheme (JEE and AIEEE at the NationalLevel and the State Level Engineering EntranceExaminations (SLEEE) for State Level Institutions – withan option to join AIEEE). This takes care of varyingadmission standards in these programmes and helps inmaintenance of professional standards. This also solvesproblems of overlaps and reduces physical, mental andfinancial burden on students and their parents due tomultiplicity of entrance examinations.
