Abrasive wheel

Aim
This training course is designed to meet the requirements for training in line with the Provision and Use
of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER 1998) for safety in the use of abrasive wheels.
Objectives
The course is designed to show delegates how to correctly identify, examine and change abrasive wheels
and discs in the workplace in accordance with current guidelines and legislative requirements.
Content
The abrasive wheel regulations is now part of legislation PUWER (provision & use of work equipment
regulations 1998).It is a legal requirement that all persons involved in the supervision, mounting of or
operational use of an abrasive wheel and machine are trained and certificated. The training is fully
interactive with delegates encouraged to demonstrate their awareness of safety in the use of abrasive
wheels and concludes with a short written examination. The course covers the following :
Protective clothing
Legislation
Hazard identification
Characteristics of an abrasive wheel
The marking system
Handling and storage
Inspecting Wheels
Performing a ring test
Speed and speed conversion
Identifying components
Adjusting the work rest
Truing and dressing an abrasive wheel
General safety awareness
Method of Evaluation
Training/demonstration/practical application/syndicate work/skill stations/question and answer papers/final
practical workstation assessments.

Achievement Measure
This is a competency based course which is achievement measured using continual assessment, skill
stations, question and answer papers and final practical assessment criteria. A certificate of competence is
issued on successful completion of the course which lasts for 3 years.
Long Term Evaluation
After successful completion of this course the delegates will have a much greater understanding of the
Health & Safety at Work Act and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulation 1998 (PUWER) and
be competent in the practical changing of grinding discs. These skills will ensure much safer working
practices and encourage a safer working environment when using both grinding tools and disc cutting
tools in the workplace. It is strongly advised that delegates refresh these skills on a regular basis.
