15 When the water in the skin was gone,
she cast the child under one of the bushes.
16 Then she went and sat down opposite
him a good way off, about the distance of a
bowshot; for she said, “Do not let me look

18 There they crucified him, and with him
two others, one on either side, with Jesus
between them. 19 Pilate also had an
inscription written and put on the cross. It

was crucified was near the city; and it was
written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek.

clothes and divided them into four parts,

to fulfill what the scripture says, “They
divided my clothes among themselves, and

IN HONOR OF OUR MOTHERS
Mother’s Day at Trinity Church has
always been a very special day. For the first
ten years of this church’s life, Mother's Day
was Women’s Day.
Once I began my pastorate here,
however, I moved Women’s Day off of
Mother's Day so that we could give proper
recognition and honor to our mothers on one
day and to all of the women in our church and
church community on a separate day. Today
is the day that we stop to honor our mothers
and I want to take this opportunity to send a
pastoral message to all of the women who
gave us life.
Because my mother is such a blessing
in my life, I never thought about all of the
members in our congregation who are not
blessed as I am. Shortly after becoming a
pastor I had members bring to my attention the
fact that their mothers had abandoned them.
I had other members who told me
“horror stories” of how their mothers treated
them as they sought their own agendas, sexual
agendas, “getting a man” agendas and
professional career agendas. Our members (as
children of these women) got kicked to the
curb. That made Mother's Day very difficult
for them as I talked about my own mother and
the mothers who had tried to do it God's way.

On this Mother's Day I want to say to
those members that had it not been for your
mothers you would not be here! They may not
have done it God's way, but I thank God that
they did not get an abortion. If they had, you
would not be here!
To all of our mothers who are single
parents, I write you on this day to encourage
you and to thank you. I thank you for your
hard work. I thank you for your sacrifices. I
thank you for doing your best to raise your
children in the church and to raise them in the
fear and admonition of the Lord.
Yours is a thankless job. You wear
the stereotype of the “single moms” and you
get the “putdowns” that are so easily and
rapidly given by the church community. On
this Mother's Day I want to lift you up and not
put you down!
I thank you for the love that you have
given your child(ren). I thank you for the
sacrifices you have made on their behalf. I
thank you for pushing them and praying for
them. I thank you for seeing to it that they had
the very best that you could offer and on
behalf of our Lord, I say to you, “Thank you!”
To the mothers of our church who
have been “married moms” and who have had
to care for your children and your husbands
(and many would say that we are children
too!) I want to say a special “Thank you!”
You have worked hard. You have provided

love, nurture and a spiritual foundation for
your children.
You have done an awesome balancing
act in juggling the roles of mother, wife,
friend, caretaker, nurse, cook and
“superwoman.” There is no “S” on your chest
in terms of your being “superwoman.” There
is an invisible “S” on your soul, however, as
being one of God’s “saints!” Thank you!
To the “other mothers” in our
congregation, I say “Thank you,” also. You
have been “surrogate mothers.” You have
been “play mothers.” You have been the
feminine presence in the lives of many of us
who talked to you when we felt we could not
talk to our biological mothers.
For all that you have done to make life
what it has been for those “play children” of
yours, I say a special thank you also. May
God continue to bless you and keep you.

This is the weekend that the members
of Trinity United Church of Christ and the
members of Friendship West Baptist Church
Happy Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 8, 2005
in Dallas, Texas, have been looking forward to
for two years now. This is the weekend that
our son in the ministry, the Reverend
Frederick Douglas Haynes III, graduates
with his Doctor of Ministry from Oxford
University.
The graduation ceremony took place at
Notre Dame University on Friday, May 6,
2005. Several members of Friendship West
came to Chicago and to Indiana by plane, by
bus and by automobile to share in this special
moment with their beloved Pastor and our son.
As a “Daddy,” I am extremely proud.
(I think you already know that!) I just want to
say to the members of Friendship West who
are worshipping with us today and I want to
say to Freddy, “Congratulations and God bless
you!” You have done an awesome job, an
excellent job, and we are proud of you.
Please greet the members of
Friendship West who worship with us today
and let them know how much you appreciate
their pastor and his gifts of ministry.

Next Sunday, May 15th, at 3:00 p.m.,
our Women's Chorus will hold its annual
concert here in the Sanctuary of Trinity UCC.

faithfully two and three times a month,
providing a ministry of music for the members
of our congregation, and they only have one
concert a year. They would love to have your
support just once a year as they support their
church members so faithfully throughout the
year!
I would love to have your support for
their concert, also. I need you to be here next
Sunday to show them that we love them, that
we appreciate them and that their efforts are
not in vain. The women in this ministry make
52 to 60 rehearsals a year – after having
worked hard all day. Then they sing on the
third Sunday mornings and the first Sunday
and fourth Sunday evenings at our worship
services each month. That is a minimum of 30
services a year – not counting funerals and
outside engagements!
Please come back to the 3:00 p.m.
service next week to show your appreciation
and to let them know that we love them and
thank God for all that they do to make our
church what it is.

Calling All Men!
On Friday, May 20, 2005, the men of
Trinity will gather in the sanctuary for our first
all-male worship service in the year 2005. The
preacher for the night will be the Reverend
Otis Moss III, pastor of the Tabernacle
Baptist Church in Augusta, Georgia.
Our congregation fell in love with
Pastor Moss when he preached our Youth
Revival last year. He blessed the men of our
church at the 2004 Men’s Conference and he
will be back in our midst on Friday night, May
20th.
All members of the church are invited
to attend. We just want to say to the sisters,
however, that the focus will be on lifting up
African American men and the importance of
their role in the African American community.

Bolton Bad for U.N.
Dear Trinity Members,
The United Church of Christ has a
strong and proud legacy of supporting the
United Nations. The General Synod of the
United Church of Christ has repeatedly
affirmed that a productive relationship between
the United Nations and the United States is
essential for a successful U.S. foreign policy.
Both the UCC Wider Church Ministries and
UCC Justice and Witness Ministries hold non-
governmental standing with the United
Nations.
John Bolton, the nominee of the Bush
Administration to serve as the U.S.
ambassador to the United Nations, has a long
history of opposing the work of the United
Nations. His willingness to put ideology
ahead of American security has been well
documented. Mr. Bolton has said that the day
President Bush retracted the U.S. commitment
to the International Criminal Court was the
happiest day of his professional career.
The Senate Foreign Relations
Committee has raised many concerns about
entrusting the highly sensitive task of forging
international agreements in a polarized and
dangerous world to John Bolton. These
concerns are too great to move this nomination
out of committee to the full Senate floor.

STOP THE GENOCIDE
The Faith Community of Saint Sabina
invites elected officials, ministers and the
general public to join them on Tuesday, May
10, 7:30 p.m., Dirksen Federal Plaza (Adams
& Dearborn) to a prayer vigil demanding that
the United States and the United Nations end
their indifference and stop genocide in Darfur
now!
For the past two years, Sudan’s
western Darfur region has been the scene of an
orchestrated campaign of rape and killings.
There are broad estimates of how many have

been killed, ranging from 70,000 to more than
300,000. There have been so many villages
torched and plundered that virtually everyone
in Darfur seems to now be living in refugee
camps. About 2.6 million people live in all of
Darfur, a region the size of Texas.

SUNDAY!
Most of our new members do not
know that we honor, recognize and give
“shout-outs” to all of our graduates on the
second Sunday in June. Because so many
members don’t know that, they have not yet

We NEED You!
Your pastor, your church and the
entire Media Department of Trinity United
Church of Christ need you to spread the word!
For well over ten years, Trinity
provided the Chicagoland viewing audience
with one full hour of power. For well over ten
years, members of this church, friends of
Trinity and many, many others were blessed to
get the genius of Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright,
Jr. We were blessed and provided ministry to
be a blessing to several thousands in the
Chicagoland viewing area.
We thank God for all who watched us
and worshiped with us during that period of
time. As we all know, however, “to everything
there is a time and a season.” The season has
changed. We were blessed to have faithful
viewers during the WJYS season. As faithful
as our viewers were, however, their viewing
did not generate any revenue.
Your church spent well over two
million dollars airing that prime time Monday
night worship service. Within those ten years,
two million dollar expense, we did not
generate one-tenth of the expense in revenue.
Our viewers failed to plant a seed in this
ministry. They failed to purchase the sermons
or support the ministry of the church
financially. Life was made very easy for the
viewers, as they taped the services and

sermons, week in and week out.
Because we are blessed to have Dr.
Wright as our pastor, and so many others
across the globe long to be blessed by the
messages God gives him, we remained
prayerful for ten years. Our prayer was for
God to lead us to minister, at least nationally,
in God’s own time.
As the ministry of Dr. Wright grew,
preaching and lecturing 40+ weeks out of each
year in all areas of the world, more people
outside of these walls called Trinity United
Church of Christ constantly prayed and asked
why they could not get Dr. Wright on any of
their religious broadcast programming. Several
others began working on securing Pastor
Wright and Trinity on national programming.
Because God is faithful, Trinity is now
able to share the liberation theology preached
through the man of God, Jeremiah A. Wright,
Jr., with the nation! What a blessing this
national ministry has already been to the
church, within one month!
Monetary gifts, tape series orders,
book sales, Trumpet Newsmagazines, etc., come
in daily! We receive more calls now for orders
on any given Sunday or Tuesday morning than
we would receive within an entire month while
we were broadcasting on WJYS. To God be
the glory!

 TO DO JUSTICE
Many media outlets in this country are
run and directed by right-wing conservatives
with the financial resources to ensure that their
viewpoint is passed over to the viewers and
readers as fact. In their effort to shape the
views of those watching and reading these
media outlets, supporters’ privileged
conservative agenda not only fund the outlets
to ensure that their message in disseminated,
but they also hire persons to frame and deliver
talking points to the media. In essence, the
outlets are being told what to think and what
to say by those with the financial resources,
who only want to preserve their privileged
positions to the detriment of those on whose
backs their riches come and have come.
Consider the following examples. So-
called journalist, Armstrong Williams, was
hired by the government for $240,000 to push
Bush’s No Child Left Behind Act on his
syndicated television show. Corporations, like
Wal-Mart, throw exorbitant sums of money to
shows like “The Tavis Smiley Show” as a
supporter. The chairman of PBS has recently
made decisions which indicate their desire to
infuse more and more of the conservative
agenda into broadcasting schemes and shows
on PBS claiming that these decisions are an
attempt to bring more objectivity and balance.
Think further as you listen to the
music on the radio, particularly with regard to
hip-hop music and stations that play hip-hop.
The music played is funded by one of the five
conglomerates that literally own hip-hop.
Many times, it is music degrades women, or
dealing in sex, drugs, murder, etc.

Micah 6:8
Very rarely will you hear music from
the hip-hop or R&B genre that deals in any
governmental criticism, or positive messages,
as if that music does not exist. It is a part of a
larger scheme in controlling all of media, and
controlling the minds of people through
messages of fear. Terrorism, homophobia,
etc., are all issues used by those who control
media to keep people in fear, while those who
run the companies and fund the companies do
what they will in order to preserve their
privilege.
I encourage you to seek out other
forms of media that give another view than the
one being forced upon people today. This is
one purpose of our own Trinity Trumpet
Newsmagazine - to offer a perspective other
than that coming from the dominant culture
regarding the issues we face as a people.
Don’t depend on the major outlets to give you
what you need regarding news. Do the
research for yourself. When you do read or
view those outlets, I encourage you to do so

 STEWARDSHIP

M easuring The Reach Of Your Stewardship

To describe a product’s success, newspapers sometimes state, “If all the (type of item)
ever sold were lined up end-to-end, they’d reach from the earth to the moon and back.”
Sometimes, this line is long enough to reach the moon multiple times. It’s an easy way to help
readers imagine the large quantities involved.

There’s no way of knowing how far all the donations given by Christians would reach if lined up.
Of course, it isn’t necessary to measure them in terms of reaching to the moon and back.

Instead, think about reaching needy families across the world with donations to a livestock
program. Think about reaching students across the country with scholarships to help them go to
college. Think about reaching the hungry in a nearby city with sandwiches made in your church
kitchen. Think about reaching the hearts of people sitting in the pews around you with musical or
dramatic performances.

Finally, think of how the church has reached out to you, in one way or in many. Then try to think
of other ways you can help others with your time, talent or treasure. Could you give time to help
shut-ins maintain their property? A check to help finance our church’s expansion? A homemade
dessert, afghan or bookends to be sold at a church bake sale and bazaar? A can of soup for a food
drive, or hat and mittens for a clothing drive?

God has reached out to us, giving us time, talent and treasure. Now it’s our responsibility to use
those things to reach out as far as we can to others.
