CP-0010536149 much work academically. With Division II lacrosse, its more relaxed. KM: What do you like most about go- ing to Bishop Eustace? RH: I love the community. Everyone is like family, and we treat each other like brothers. Were all close, especially with it being senior year. KM: Brothers are known to fight. RH: Sometimes, but its competitive stuff: I want to be better than you; I want to take your spot. Its competitive, not personal. KM: This is your third year as a start- ing linebacker. Youve got a chance to set some records, right? RH: Im hoping. Rollins College, a Division II school in Florida. KM: How did that come about? RH: It was back and forth between football and lacrosse. But the opportu- nity came up, and I accepted it. KM: A scholarship? RH: Partial, and Im looking for a community service scholarship, which is $20,000, to help my parents out. KM: What tipped the scale in favor of lacrosse? RH: That it wasnt a full-time job. If I was going to play football, that would be like a full-time job along with so self this season? RH: My goal is around 110 tackles, two interceptions and four sacks. Thats my goal. KM: You have specific numbers in mind? RH: Yes. I want to break the (career tackles) record by a certain point. KM: Whats it going to take to enjoy the success youd like to achieve? RH: I wouldnt be able to do it unless the rest of the defensive players were doing their part and helping me out. You need everybody. We need everyone to play at their best. KM: Whats your favorite college foot- ball team? RH: Florida Gators. I visited there when I was a kid. I saw a game and just fell in love with the atmosphere of The Swamp. KM: How would you describe yourself as a player? RH: Aggressive. I like to be aggres- sive, fly to the ball. But when it comes to what Vinny Pa- pale has done on the football field at Bishop Eustace Prep, the legacy he leaves when this season is complete will have been orchestrated on his own. Theres no denying Vince Papale, the former Philadelphia Eagle and sub- ject of the movie Invincible, has played a role in the maturation process of his son as an athlete. The two share the same drive, the same determina- tion, a similar work ethic. But there comes a point when the name on the back of the uniform becomes irrele- vant and what gets done on the field be- comes the determining factor. As a player, his dad separated him- self early on and let Vinny make a name for himself when he was a sophomore, coach Rob Cormier said. Vinny has a tremendous work ethic and has molded himself into what I think is one of the top defensive backs in South Jersey. As a defensive back, weve never had one like him. Hes separated him- self. Hell be one of the top players to ever come out of here, at least since Ive been here. Papale had 49 tackles as the Crusad- ers finished 6-5 last season. He also had four interceptions, 10 pass blocks and two forced fumbles. He averaged 25.3 yards on kickoff returns and 13.4 on punt returns. As a wide receiver, he had 28 catches for 367 yards and five touchdowns. Cor- mier expects those numbers to possi- bly double. Hes an athlete, the coach says. At 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, Papale is likely to be on the field for just about every play. He has a scholarship offer from Campbell University, while the likes of Delaware, Duke and Wake For- est have expressed interest. Im hoping for a big senior season offense, defense, special teams, he said. Im someone who wont back down, someone who would never lay down on the field for anyone. Im just a hard worker and pretty determined. Im determined on every play. If the ball is in my hands, I just have to make a play. I need to do everything I can to help my team get in the end zone, get an interception. Papale played as a sophomore and made great strides as a junior. As a sen- ior, hes now someone teammates look to for leadership and playmaking abil- ity. Expectations are extremely high as Bishop Eustace competes in the West Jersey Football League Royal Division, and Papale is one who will be in the spotlight. There was a tremendous jump from where he was as a sophomore to his junior year, but this summer ... hes com- pletely different from where he was last year, Cormier said. Hes the guy. Hes going to lock up one on one with Cam- dens top guy (Brad Hawkins), Glassbo- ros guy (Juwan Johnson). The kids be- lieve in him, and he believes in himself. A big punt return, a kickoff return, a big down where we need to throw the ball or he needs to lock down the opponents best receiver, thats the kid whos going to do it for us. Papale realizes this is it; this is the last time hell play on Friday nights with those who became his brothers just four years ago. Its an exciting time and one he plans to fully embrace. Its been crazy. Being able to play as a sophomore and now coming into my senior season, its just flown by, he said. I cant believe Im a senior and have to start thinking about college. Its been a great experience, the best four years of my life easily. Its a bittersweet feeling. I remem- ber like it was yesterday suiting up as a freshman. I never thought this day would come. Time flew by completely, and I cant believe its my senior year. Im excited because we have a great sen- ior class and Im excited to go to battle with them on Friday nights. I think we can make a run at a lot of things. Reach Kevin Minnick at kminnick@ courierpostonline.com. Follow him on Twitter @cp_varsity. Papale does it all By Kevin Minnick Courier-Post JOSE F.
