QUESTION 1
This traditional English tale also features X with her fierce and volatile temper. A Catholic,
she persecuted and exterminated all those who adhered to the Protestant faith. The
gardens referred to in the tale were actually graveyards. Instruments of torture (much like
those used to lash Jesus during the Crucifixion) have also been described euphemistically.
An early form of the guillotine which was introduced during the reign of her namesake that
is described was fraught with issues as it took many whacks of the blade to behead the
victim. In the meantime, the victim would try to run off, bleeding profusely from their
injuries.
MARY MARY QUITE CONTRARY
Mary Mary quite contrary,
How does your garden grow?
With silver bells and cockle shells
And pretty maids all in a row
QUESTION 2
While the very basis of this innocuous tale seems to defy common logic, one common
interpretation is that its about the beheading of King Louis XVI and his queen Marie
Antoinette during the French Revolution. This theory is made difficult by the fact that the
very first version of this tale pre-dates these events. Another interpretation is the attempt
by King Charles I to reform the taxes on liquid measures. He was blocked by Parliament,
so subsequently ordered that the volume of a half pint (or an X) be reduced, but the tax
remained the same. This meant that he still received more tax, despite Parliament's veto.
The reference to "Y", a quarter pint, is said to reflect that the Y dropped in volume as a
consequence. X and Y give you the answer.
X JACK; Y JILL
Jack and Jill went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water.
Jack fell down and broke his crown,
And Jill came tumbling after.

QUESTION 3
The origin of these lyrics is said to date back to the reign of Queen Elizabeth I (1533-
1603), one of the English Tudor monarchs. During this period of English history there was
constant rivalry between Spain and England culminating in the launch of the Spanish
Armada in 1588.The Armada was led by Duke of Medina Sedonia and the the fleet
numbered over 130 ships. The English fleet, under Admiral Lord Howard, totalled 34 small
Navy vessels and 163 armed merchant ships. But the great Spanish Armada was
defeated. Only 65 Spanish galleons and just 10,000 men returned to Spain. The attempt
failed, not only because of the swift nature of the smaller English ships but also by
inclement weather conditions which scattered the Armada fleet.

QUESTION 4
The allusion in this tale is to Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, the most important statesman and
churchman of the Tudor history period in 16th century England. Cardinal Wolsey proved to
be a faithful servant but displeased the King, Henry VIII, by failing to facilitate the King's
divorce from Queen Katherine of Aragon who had been his queen of many years. The
reason for seeking the divorce and hence the inception of this story was to enable him to
marry Anne Boleyn with whom he was passionately in love. Cardinal Wolsey is also made
reference to in the nursery rhyme Little Boy Blue.
