These signs of possession have been taken from Bilal Phillips interview with Sunni
exorcists. Today there are more people with so called mental health problems then
ever before, there is no cure for schizophrenia, epilepsy, madness etc. The
symptoms are the fundamental aspects in realizing and treating possession from
the jinnee (If you would like to know what a jinn is please read the books on the Jinn
which is on my documents). The possessed person must be a Muslim and this is
very important if you want to permanently rid the evil which is in the person. The
sooner they realize that their body is occupied the easier it will be for that person to
drive the spirit out by reciting verses from the Qur’an (ruqya), seeking Allah’s
forgiveness and various other techniques which don’t involve shirk. Please note that
if you know someone who is possessed then it will be a good idea to first take them
to a hospital, to see a psychiatrist, mental health expert etc. Exorcism should be the
last resort and the exorcist should be a pious individual, otherwise it could possess
the exorcist. It is a known fact that women are more likely to be possessed then
men, as the jinn may fall in love with a beautiful woman and can even have sexual
intercourse with her. Other reasons for possession could be revenge, anger, hatred,
envy, a grudge etc. Epilepsy is one of the signs of possession but also could be a
chronic neurological disorder, same goes for schizophrenia. Some of the early
symptoms are abdominal pains and also a burning sensation around the body
especially around the stomach and the chest. Other symptoms are;
1. Restlessness
2. Unease
3. Speaking Unintelligibly
Some of the signs are a possessed person mentioning that he is uneasy, he finds
himself getting up and sitting down frequently, he speaks unintelligibly, etc. This is
called demonic possession (sara’ al-jinn). (Sheikh Muhammad Tahir ‘Abdul Muhsin)
He acts unnaturally, always looking at the ground, or he gets up suddenly and walks
around. The possessed are generally unable to sit still in one place for any length of
time. He frequently goes to the toilet and seems to be generally uneasy. Sometimes
he displays a strange, eerie smile. He may laugh in an abnormal way without any
reason, as if he is seeing things we cannot. (Muhammad al-Funaytil al-‘Unayzee)
4. Feeling of Instability
The state of the possessed is unstable, and they usually don’t come to me until
after they have visited a physician or psychiatrist. Patients usually won’t come until
they have tried all other methods. In that way, we know that he is likely to be
possessed. (Sheikh Muhammad Taahir ‘Abdul Muhsin).
5. Depression
6. Headaches and Migraines
7. Continual Movements of the Body
I first ask the patients some questions. I ask if they experience sates of depression,
headaches, and continual movements in the bodies or disturbing dreams. If that is
the case, they spend the night at my house, and I ask them to inform me when the
condition comes. I then recite over them. (‘Abdullah Mshrif ‘Amree).
Sa’eed Muhammad: She said that when she poured hot water she felt as though
there was a fire in her legs. Some people sense the jinn’s entrance while others do
not.
Bilaal Phillip: Was his voice different from your brother’s wife’s voice?
