In a surprise turn of events, the State withdrew its case againstone of the accused in a muti killings trial.Xolani Bhengu was one of seven people accused of murderingseveral women for muti purposes on the south of Durban. He appeared separately from the other accused in the Pinetownmagistrate's court on Thursday. The court was expected to hand down judgment in his bailapplication. However, a last-minute decision to withdrawcharges against Bhengu so he could become a state witnesstook the defence by surprise.Because of the defence's dissatisfaction with the state's move, the prosecutor called investigating officer Superintendent AntonBooysen to the stand.

Booysen then read out chilling details in Bhengu's affidavit thatlinked him and four of the accused to the murders. In the statement, Bhengu told police how he had been recruitedby two of the accused, together with his brother, Popa Bhengu, and how night after night they found different women and killedthem. He said after stabbing most of the women, they would cut offbody parts and would later sell them to a sangoma in AdamsMission. He said that after each of the murders, they were given R500 bySandile Bhengu.Magistrate Stanley Hlophe announced the charges againstBhengu had been withdrawn and that he was free to go.The six are accused of terrorising women in the KwaMakhutha,Adams Mission, Folweni and Umbumbulu areas since lastOctober. The accused, Abigail Njapha, 63, Thini Dumakude, 38, MuziKhoza, 53, Clement Ngcobo, 35, Sandile Bhengu, 34, and PopaBhengu, 19, were remanded in custody.Booysen said Bhengu would be placed in the witness protectionprogramme.
