By Agiza HlongwaneA packed Pinetown magistrate's court gallery reacted with shockthis week as more gory details emerged of how up to 15 womenwere hacked to death, and their body parts removed and sold fora couple of hundred rand to a bogus sangoma.In the dock was Abigail Njapha, the 63-year-old woman accusedof buying the body parts for muti and charged with conspiracy tomurder.Next to her sat five men aged between 19 and 53 - all allegedlymembers of a gang which has left a trail of blood in theKwaMakhutha, Folweni Adams Mission and Umbumbulu areas,south of Durban.

 On Thursday, Magistrate Stanley Hlophetook many by surprise when he droppedcharges against the sixth man, XolaniBhengu, who has since turned statewitness.Bhengu, who had expressed fears for his safety, hassubsequently been placed in a witness protection programme.Under cross examination by prosecutor Nancy Pillay,Superintendent Anton Booysen of the Serious and ViolentCrimes Unit read out a damning affidavit from Bhengu in whichhe implicated himself and his brother, Popo Bhengu, 20, in themurders.Bhengu stated in detail how the two were recruited intothe gang  by the alleged ring leader, Sandile "My Man" Bhengu, and howthey would drive around at night looking for women. The bodies of the nine victims, with similar headinjuries, werediscovered between last October and February this year. Policesaid in March that the women's ears, tongues and private partshad been removed.In his affidavit, Bhengu states, "When we reached the woman,accused No 1 (Sandile Bhengu) took out a dagger and startedstabbing the woman in her head. He ordered (fellow accused)Muzi (Khoza) to stab the lady on the stomach. He said 'this ishow it is done'."Two more women were attacked the next day. For each scenewe got paid R500 each. Xolani and Popo would get R500."In one of the attacks, a woman managed to escape, but anotherone didn't. Then we removed the blood and breast of the womanand sold it to Mrs Njapha of Adams Mission."While the five men remained tense throughout the proceedings,Njapha quietly sighed.One of the women was pregnant when she waskilled. "Weremoved her vagina and her left ear," Xolani stated. Following
