'Witchcraft' arrest in Mozambique
The Mozambican authoritiessay three people are underpolice detention for theiralleged involvement intrafficking of human bodyparts.
 The case involves this week'smurder and mutilation of sevenwomen and a child in CaboDelgado province.Murder, mutilation and exhuming human bones for witchcrafthave become a common practice, particularly in the country'snorthern and central regions.Items are sold in neighbouring Malawi, South Africa andZimbabwe.Lazaro Mathe, governor of Cabo Delgado, says the criminalskill their victims and extract genital parts apparently forwitchcraft.He said three people suspected of involvement in the crimeare under police custody.The Cabo Delgado provincial boss has called on the people of Mocimboa de Praia to remain calm, adding that the situationwould soon be under control.
Lynching
 This is not the first time that murder cases of people for theextraction of body parts has occurred in Mocimboa da Praiaand elsewhere in the province.The first case was reported last year and two people weredetained for allegedly killing ninepeople. But the police laterreleased one of them for unexplained reasons.  This infuriated the local people who caught and killed thesuspect after his release.The governor describes the phenomenon as worrisome andpromises to wage a sustainedbattle to crack down on it.Murder and trafficking of human beings and parts have beenreported in many parts of Mozambique.In a recent incident, two young men were detained innorthern Niassa province in possession of huge quantities of human bones ready to sell inMalawi.This has prompted the Mozambican cabinetto enact a billagainst the trafficking of humans for bodyparts to bediscussed and approved in thecountry's parliament thismonth.
