World is developing at a rapid pace and all the human beings regardless of gender or other

discrimination are contributing towards the uplift of human living standard. Traditionally men
only used to go out to fulfill the desires of them and their family. They were the sole bread
earners of their family and fulfill their needs. All the burden of expense was on their shoulders
and they worked hard to meet and exceed the expectations of themselves and family. But today
women are equally helping and striving in all the fields of life. Whether it is medicine or
engineering, business or military they are working side by side with equal intelligence and
energy. The stereotype that men are stronger than women has gone old. Women are now living
as man in the house. (Galloway, 1978). They are considered to be the equal contributors to the
economy and anti-poverty efforts whether they are working from home or workplace. They are
working harder than men as they work at field and take care of their homes as well. Women are
good teachers, doctors, engineers, designers, chefs, managers, political personalities etc.
Although they are much more sensitive and sentimental but they can handle the complex
situations and problems with equal intelligence and sharpness.
With the advent of feminist movement, role of women has come under great scrutiny in society.
The recent development is the induction or role of women in military. It has become the heart of
many discussions that women does not fulfill the criteria of being in military same like men. It
has become the hot topic and controversial issue as the role of women in combat. Women are not
similar to men in physical strength and brave to cope up with the requirements of armed forces.
But with each passing moment, ideas are changed. In history women have served in leadership
roles as queens and in combat roles disguised as men. World War 1 and 2 are the famous
examples of female taking part as combats and history also proved that women have played vital
role in wars and battles.
Females have proved themselves to be physically, mentally and morally capable of performing
combat operations. If females are as qualified as men, than it is normal to go for any gender.
Infact it is better to have females as they are in better shape. Recruitment and training standards
are easier to women. Female injury rates can easily be reduced through training of muscle
building. Also in this modern world and technological era, physical strength is not the only factor
of inducing candidates in combat. Increased technical skills with expertise are required which are
same in females. Gone were the days when there was no technological equipment and warriors
instruments and only physical efforts were needed to win the battles or war. With the advent of
nuclear technology in the form of bombs, missiles etc knowledge and intelligence has played an
immense role. The strength of forces increases when both the genders are present. Skills and
expertise doubled and bottom line results also. When the applicant pool is widens the more
willing recruits are become available. These women are willing so they enthusiastically
participate even when they are pregnant to contribute their part. Traditions have been changed.
Women are serving as fighter pilots, aeronautical engineer, mechanical engineers that go in wars
when it begins. All women are exposed to front line risks in this modern world of combats like in
Afghanistan. With the warfare changed women are still supported and there selection is not
wavered which shows that they are allowed and invited to take part in forces.
When it comes to comparison, women in some areas are proved to be more effective than men.
Allowed in forces, talent pool has been increased for sensitive and delicate jobs other than
soldier skills. Conflict resolution in wars is also enhanced when women are hired because they
calmly understands and handles the situation or problematic areas. Unlike past, when seniority or
promotion was based on participation in combat, today women are getting to the ranks of Major
Generals etc as they are given the same opportunities. Despite all this, women are not that much
in number like Men. Men have their dominance in forces and they are considered superiors to
women when it comes to finalization of promotions.
The selection or need or induction in combats is still in the developing phase. The jobs designed
in forces are according to Men physical fitness. When female go and are tested on those
standards they get overstretched and physically it doesnt suits them. Injury rates are higher in
women who show that they need more fitness and power to bear same like Men. As a result of
which many females get failed and are less efficient. The costs needed to designed additional
logistical and regulatory standards are higher than the talent needed. If the passion is not that
high, Women may get absent from work due to illness or pregnancy and the number gets
understaffed in the hour of need. Sometimes men when try to maintain the gender roles
traditionally and protect females in the combat units, harassment and resentment in the male
military culture creates a problem. Females are more at a risk of harassment, rape and torture and
women are abused and mistreated badly when they become prisoners. Although both men and
women are given equal opportunities in forces still promotions are less opened for females. Very
few females get to the level of senior ranks and positions. They are allowed to take part in wars
and have respective roles on commanding units and corps but they are not taken to the battle
grounds.
Despite all these pros and cones of female induction in combats, History has proved that gender
serving in combats were overwhelming males, but with the passage of time women have came at
front as leaders and in combats as disguised warriors. Queens like Queen Boudicca served in
combat of britans against Rome. Russia used a specific unit of combat having females in First
World War. (Andrews, 1978). Thousands of German and Britain females served in Second
World War anti aircraft and shut down enemy fliers. Women are serving at wide scale in Soviet
Union as medical and political officers. In Yugoslavia women are serving in combat and
resistance movements.
Women in United States have been involved in military and law has been passed in 1948
properly. U.S military academy took first group of female in 1976. In the World War 2 all the
main nations utilized women in proper uniforms. Many served in nursing roles whereas over
50,000 women were at front lines and anti aircraft units in Britain and Germany. Sixty seven
women as army nurses were captured in World War 2 by Japanese in Philippines in 1942 and
were kept as prisoners of wars for two years. Women served as women auxiliary corps during
the war and many sent to European and pacific theatres. Naval nurses 140,000 in number served
in overseas hospitals and flight nurses in World War 2. In Korean war of 1950, three air force
nurses got killed in flight during duty. In 1970, chief of army nurse corps and women army corps
director got promoted to Brigadier general. In 1982, for test pilot school, first women got
selected as woman aviator.
The contribution of Women in the social and economic world with combats cannot be denied.
They are working side by side with men and giving their best with equal energy, time and effort.
Serving as doctors, engineers, pilots women are competing head to head with men, which shows
the prosperity of nations and success. They are physically getting strong to come up to the level
of men. The technological advancement and more efficient war instruments require skills and
expertise that females are much more familiar of now. Women are acting as helping hand now
and work with equal ease for their families. It is depicted from history that Women has always
been the part of military from the beginning and their status as working women is not a new
concept.
All the forces have opened their doors for women and have widened the pool of talent. Lady
Diana, Mother Teressa, Benazir Bhurro, Tehmina Daultana,Sonia Gandhi, Maj General shahida
Malik are all examples of the world Famous talented females on earth. Women are seen
everywhere in banks, hospitals, businesses, army, airforce, navy, politics, engineering etc. The
era of male dominance in the work life has got old. Women are having the same qualities like
men and they are selected on the same criteria. Although they are not in the battle field but they
are active personnels and supporters at the backend which is a source of motivation. All nations
should proud to have such women who are not working at homes but also contributing in the
socioeconomic world. (Quester, 1977). They are excelling in the fields of human resource,
finance and marketing as well leading the businesses and helping in wars thus proving that they
are not less than men. They always have broad ideas and think out of the box. Women are living
in the world where there are proper laws for rights of equal pay, financial independence and
equal opportunities for them then why they cannot be selected in combat on the basis of their
skills and expertise.
If they can bear the pain of child birth and pregnancy which males cannot than they can bear any
pain? When women sign up to fight in combat than then understand that every street, ground,
place is a war background. They act willfully with full determination same like men so they
should be given equal opportunity in every matter of combat regardless of the old opinions of
physical strength or power needed to hold weapons and equipment. World has changed and so
the ways, So traditional views of women not equal to men should also be set aside.
