LUKE 13:1-9 (NRSV)1 At that very time there were some presentwho told him about the Galileans whose bloodPilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 Heasked them, “Do you think that because theseGalileans suffered in this way they were worsesinners than all other Galileans? 3 No, I tellyou; but unless you repent, you will all perishas they did. 4 Or those eighteen who werekilled when the tower of Siloam fell on them –do you think that they were worse offendersthan all the others living in Jerusalem? 5 No, Itell you; but unless you repent, you will allperish just as they did.” 6 Then he told thisparable: “A man had a fig tree planted in hisvineyard; and he came looking for fruit on itand found none. 7 So he said to the gardener,“See here! For three years I have come lookingfor fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none.Cut it down! Why should it be wasting thesoil?’ 8 He replied, “Sir, let it alone for onemore year, until I dig around it and put manureon it. 9 If it bears fruit next year, well andgood; but if not, you can cut it down.’”

ACTS 4:1-13 (NIV)1 The priests and the captain of the templeguard and the Sadducees came up to Peter andJohn while they were speaking to the people. 2They were greatly disturbed because theapostles were teaching the people andproclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of thedead. 3 They seized Peter and John, andbecause it was evening, they put them in jailuntil the next day. 4 But many who heard themessage believed, and the number of men grewto about five thousand. 5 The next day therulers, elders and teachers of the law met inJerusalem. 6 Annas the high priest was there,and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander and theother men of the high priest's family. 7 Theyhad Peter and John brought before them andbegan to question them: "By what power orwhat name did you do this?" 8 Then Peter,filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them:"Rulers and elders of the people! 9 If we arebeing called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a cripple and are asked howhe was healed, 10 then know this, you and allthe people of Israel: It is by the name of JesusChrist of Nazareth, whom you crucified butwhom God raised from the dead, that this manstands before you healed. 11 He is " 'the stoneyou builders rejected, which has become thecapstone. 12 Salvation is found in no one else,for there is no other name under heaven givento men by which we must be saved." 13 Whenthey saw the courage of Peter and John andrealized that they were unschooled, ordinarymen, they were astonished and they took notethat these men had been with Jesus.

LUKE 24:13-21 (NIV)13 Now that same day two of them were goingto a village called Emmaus, about seven milesfrom Jerusalem. 14 They were talking witheach other about everything that had happened.15 As they talked and discussed these thingswith each other, Jesus himself came up andwalked along with them; 16 but they were keptfrom recognizing him. 17 He asked them,"What are you discussing together as you walk along?" They stood still, their faces downcast.18 One of them, named Cleopas, asked him,"Are you only a visitor to Jerusalem and do notknow the things that have happened there inthese days?" 19 "What things?" he asked."About Jesus of Nazareth," they replied. "Hewas a prophet, powerful in word and deedbefore God and all the people. 20The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to besentenced to death, and they crucified him;21 but we had hoped that he was the one whowas going to redeem Israel. And what is more,it is the third day since all this took place.
