he apostle Paul speaks of three things that abide and last: faith, hope and love. He leaves no
doubt that “the greatest of these is love” (I Corinthians 13:13), but we cannot forget the
other two. In some ways, they make love possible. It may also be true that love makes faith
and hope possible. How do these three relate to each other, and how is our Lenten hope involved?
Faith puts us in touch with the spiritual realities that lie behind our existence. These realities,
though, cannot be defined in scientific terms, any more than love can fit into a concise definition.
Paul tells us that “faith is the substance or reassurance of things hoped for” (Hebrews 11:1). Hope
must be grounded in reality, or it is only dreaming. Faith tells us that human hope is grounded in
what God intended in our creation.
Love is the spirit that flows between God and people and also from one person to another, when
we live in God’s ways. Just as a fire exists by burning and a stream exists by flowing, so love exists in
God’s acceptance of us, in the human response of thanksgiving and in the caring inter-relatedness of
people with one another. Love is both fire and flow, the movement of God’s spirit in our midst.
Hope, then, completes the picture. Combining God’s eternal plan with human mutuality, hope
is the animating force that makes progress possible. Hope is forward momentum. Hope envisions
a good future and makes plans to achieve it. Hope is the season of spring, reaching into every life
throughout the year. Grounded in faith, enabled by love, hope builds the new life that God planned
for us and that humans seek.

e gather today, a week after we saluted our Liberating Legend, Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A.
Wright, Jr. Men and women from around the world gathered in the church to honor
our Senior Pastor. Dr. Wright’s love for God and God’s people has led to a dramatic
paradigm shift in theology and ministry. The street and the academy are now in
dialogue because of his ministry and commitment to the ideas of holistic liberation. Today, Beloved,
we continue to honor our Senior Pastor through an African ritual of honoring our elders.
You will notice the pulpit is draped in African cloth, the lecterns, altar and the main pulpit lectern,
along with the pastor’s chair. These areas are covered because the words and rituals of the sacred
were practiced behind, before and in these physical spaces.
During the Pastor’s Word, all of the pulpit chairs will be removed except the center chair. No one,
including Pastor Moss, will sit in the pulpit! We honor this space where our Senior Pastor provided
ministry, encouragement and prophetic speech to the people of God. Our pastors and deacons will
only enter the pulpit to pray, read Scripture, preach or perform the Call to Worship. We honor this
sacred space and, for the next three months, this space will be designated “honored ground.”
The ministers will wear robes and African attire at least three times a month to show our collective
respect for the work of our Senior Pastor. Our deacons will wear their stoles, black suits and African
attire to honor the work of our Senior Pastor and keep before us the sacred nature of our work. I ask
you to join me as we honor our Senior Pastor, Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A Wright, Jr.

here are many of us in United Church of Christ churches in the Chicago area who have
expertise around health and health care. We are physicians, patients, families of patients,
leaders in public health, nurses, social activists, dieticians, physical therapists, health care
administrators, professors of health, health policy advocates, chaplains, and so much
more. When it comes to actually having an impact on the full spectrum of issues in health care justice,
we have incredible resources among us!
Recognizing the power of this amazing gift of resources, the Church-In-Society Committee of
the Chicago Metropolitan Association is hosting an opportunity for faith-full dialogue, relationship
building, and planning for action.
Together we will reflect on questions such as:
• What could happen if we gathered as people of faith to get to know each other and share
from our faith, experience and knowledge?
• What do we, as UCC people, bring to these issues that is unique and that adds something
critical to the movement?
• What role can we play together in impacting health and health care in our communities
and nation?

s we make our travels in life, there is one thing that makes us stand out
as Christians, and that is the unconscious ability to give of ourselves as
living stewards. Do you know how long you have been a steward of your
resources? It should come as no surprise that we have all been stewards since we
were born!
One area that you must first understand is that everyone is a steward. Some of
us have been better stewards than others. Where do you fall?
Do you think of others before yourself? When you receive a pay raise, do you
immediately think of how your family will increase its charitable contribution,
or do you decide on which fashion trend you will purchase to stay “in style?”
Decisions like this can be difficult, but if our conviction to give is greater than
our concern over what others may think of us, then we will truly be at peace as a
steward.
