GUIDELINES FOR DAILYLIFE AT S.A.M.S.
Arrival at School
Upon arrival at school, students shallreport to the lobby area. Students may sign outof the lobby with teacher permission to go to thelibrary or other locations. Non-bus ridingstudents should not report to school until 8:05a.m.After arrival on school grounds NO PUPILWILL BE PERMITTED TO LEAVE except uponpermission granted by a member of theadministrative staff. Offenders of the above rulewill be subject to disciplinary action.
Opening Exercises
 
The Selinsgrove Area School Board hasadopted the following policy for openingexercises.
Board Policy 807, Section 2
.Accordingly, each student will be requiredto salute the flag and recite the Pledge of
Allegiance during each day’s openin
g exercises.If a student has a conscientious objection whichwill interfere with full participation in the flagsalute or Pledge of Allegiance, said studentshall maintain a respectful attitude throughoutthe ceremony.
Teaming
 
Selinsgrove Area Middle School hasadopted the Team approach to teaching. A
“Team” refers to a group of teachers from the
varying disciplines who come in contact withmany of the same students throughout theschool year. By teaming, the teachers are ableto coordinate their instruction with that of theother team members. Teaming also createscontinuity for the students from subject tosubject. The Team approach also enhances thechild-centered goal of middle level education bycreating an environment that is conducive tolearning. In addition, teaming enables teachersto communicate concerns more effectively.
Attendance
Pupils who have been absent from schoolare required to bring in a signed excuse toschool immediately upon returning after theabsence. This excuse is to contain the following:1) dates of absence; 2) reason for the absence;3) signature of parent or guardian.
Whenever possible, an excuse from the doctor should be presented.
All excuses are to be presentedto the Main Office.
Parent’s are required to subm
it a writtenexplanation for a legal absence of their childwithin five (5) school days from the date of the
child’s return to school.
Failure on the
parent’s part to provide such a written
explanation, or the child to present such anexcuse, will result in the absence being
 
recorded as unlawful
. Excuses turned in afterfive (5) days cannot be changed from unlawfulto excused.After three (3) days of unlawful absencesa letter will be sent home to notify theparent/guardian that upon the fourth unlawfulabsence Snyder County Children and Youth willbe notified.After eight (8) days of absence notcovered
by a physician’s excuse
, a letter will besent to the parents stating that the number ofabsences is significant and additional absences
could
result in requiring a medical excuse forfuture absences.After twelve (12) days of absence not
covered by a physician’s excuse
, a certifiedletter will be sent to the parents stating that allfuture absences
must
be verified by a
physician’s excuse or they wil
l be marked asunlawful absences.Any student diagnosed by a physician orsuspected by the school nurse of having acommunicable disease shall be excluded fromschool and school functions for an appropriatetime as established by the PA. Dept. of Health.Chicken Pox- Six days from the onset of lesions,if all lesions are crusted and dry.Respiratory Streptococcal Infection -Not lessthan seven days from the onset if no physicianis in attendance; or until fever has subsided andchild has been on appropriate medicationprescribed by a physician for 24 hours.Acute Contagious Conjunctivitis-24 hours fromthe start of appropriate medication prescribed bya physician.Ringworm, Impetigo, Pediculosis (Lice),Scabies- until judged non-infective by schoolnurse
or child’s physician.
 Measles- Notify the school immediately if aphysician diagnoses your child with measles.

Excuses are classified as “Excused” and“Unlawful” according to the reason for the
absence. The School Laws list the followingreasons as
“Excused” absences: 1) illness of 
the pupil, 2) quarantine of the home, 3) death inthe immediate family, 4) impassable roads, 5)exceptionally urgent reasons. All other
absences are “Unlawful” including those
absences for which no written excuses arepresented to the school office.
Tardiness to School
Students, who are reported to the office fortardiness, whether it is before roll call or forlateness to class, will be recorded. A student,who is late for school or first period beyond thethird offense, and subsequent offenses, will besubject to disciplinary action. Students must bein homeroom seat by 8:15 a.m.
Tardiness to Class
 
Students who are tardy to class (secondperiod through tenth) beyond three (3) times willbe subject to disciplinary action.
Truancy from School
 
Unlawful absence from school isunacceptable and unlawful. Unlawful absencesconstitute a criminal offense under theCompulsory School Attendance Laws. Thepenalty for this type of violation is a fine and/orimprisonment to those who fail to comply.
Fines for unlawful absences haverecently been increased to $300.00 PLUScourt costs. In addition, students may losetheir driving permits/license.
Any excuse, which is not presented within five days upon returning to school,will be considered unlawful and will constitute a truancy violation.
Educational Tours,Not School Sponsored
Pupils may be excused from schoolattendance to participate in an educational trip.This requires the completion of the form
“Request for Excused
Absence from School fora Preplanned Educational Tour or Trip
”.
Theform is available in the Main Office. The form isto be completed at least
TEN SCHOOL DAYS
 in advance of the tour or trip. Failure to do somay result in these days being unexcusedabsences.The Principal will make an evaluation ofeach request. A determination will be madebased upon the following considerations:a. Educational value of the trip for thedevelopmental level of the student.b. Attendance record (must be free ofunlawful and/or unlawful absences)c. Number and frequency of prior requestsfor educational trips.d. Present academic standings.e. Effect of absence on academicstandings.
Approved
 
Educational Trips:
The student isrequired to gather homework assignments andbooks. The homework hotline and Esemblercan also be used. Students are responsible tocomplete assignments.

Appointments During School Day
A student having an appointment with adoctor or dentist during school hours mustpresent a note to the Main Office prior to 1stperiod. This note must include the studentname, team, date, time and reason for wantingan early excuse and be signed by parent orguardian. Emergencies are the exception.Before leaving and upon returning, the studentmust sign in and out in the Main Office. Nostudent will be excused for running errands,haircuts, personal non-educational lessons, etc.Leaving for any of the stated reasons is aviolation of the Pennsylvania CompulsoryAttendance Laws and may be subject todisciplinary action.
POD Lockers
All students will be assigned a locker andprovided a lock in the POD area.
IN ACCORDANCE WITH OUR LOCKERSEARCH POLICY, ALL LOCKERS AREPROPERTY OF THE SELINSGROVE AREASCHOOL DISTRICT. STUDENTS SHOULD
HAVE “NO EXPECTATION OF PRIVACY
”  
INANY SCHOOL LOCKER
The administration has the right to inspector search any locker at any time.Students are permitted to go to theirlockers three times a day:1. When they go to the locker area in themorning to secure their materials for their A.M.classes.2. At mid-day when they switch to the afternoonclasses and secure their materials for the P.M.classes.3. At dismissal time.The only other times a student might haveto go to the locker area are if they are coming toschool after the day has begun, if they are to beexcused from school early, or if the teacher hasgranted special permission.
Locks for POD Lockers
The locks for student lockers will beavailable at the start of the year. The followingprocedures should be reviewed with yourstudents:1. The locks will be distributed free of charge.2. Locks can be returned.3.
Only school provided locks can beused
. All others will be removed fromlockers.4. Students should not give out theircombination to other students.5. At the end of the year lockers will be checked forlocks. Provided the lock is in good working order,students will not be charged. If a lock is missingor is inoperable, the student will be charged$5.00.
The school is not responsible for any itemsstolen out of their locker.
Backpacks/Bags/Purses
 
Due to the concern for student safety,backpacks/bags/purses may not be used duringthe day to carry books and materials to and fromclasses in or out of POD. They may be used totransport material to and from the home.Backpacks/bags/purses will be kept in the lockerarea during the day. Gym clothes should betaken to the locker room upon arrival to schooland picked up during afternoon announcements.
Cafeteria Procedures
Students will have a food service 4-digit IDnumber to access their debit account. Formenus, prices, and any additional food serviceinformation go towww.seal-pa.organd clickunder the services link.The cafeteria is a place where studentscan socialize during breakfast and lunch, whileenjoying a variety of nutritional and fun food andbeverage choices. Of course students must berespectful to others by appropriate behavior andactions while in the cafeteria. Students areencouraged to purchase the school lunch orthey may bring in a packed lunch. All meals willbe eaten in the cafeteria, sitting at a table.
NO OUTSIDE DELIVERIES WILL BE ACCEPTED
