Description

Pretty good cartoon, a man saving a dozen eggs during a nasty slip on the ice. With egg prices going up, this is as relevant as ever! From The Columbus Daily News, Columbus, Nebraska, Jan. 26, 1918, p. 2.

Valleri, much tak for the cartoon -- think that this is important as have been trying to pin down when the 'dozen eggs' became commercially packaged as such. The use of 'the dozen' as a wholesale/commercial' unit standard apparently goes back a couple hundred years, at least, but the retail packaging of 'the dozen' seems to be much more recent. Since generally things are only commented on as remarkable in ordinary life when they first/newly appear, this would seem to indicate that the beginning of somewhat widespread appearance might be around this date, at least in this area. best -- joel
