Good Crowds
Project Overview
Good Crowds is a project by MetaGood (www.metagood.org). We will build a robust, open-sourcetechnology platform that will enable social impact projects to raise crowdfunding. Projects that couldbenefit from this platform consist of (but not limited to):
1.
 
Journalistic Projects
a.
 
Inspiring Journalistic projects such as Inspiring Storiesb.
 
Investigative journalism projects that cover important issues in detail
2.
 
Social Engineering & Social Design Projects
a.
 
Crowdfunding of social engineering projects / pilots being carried out at the engineeringand design schools within India

Art & Film Projects
a.
 
Documentaries, art installations that have social impactOnce this platform is developed, it will be released under a GPL license allowing different institutions touse this freely and raise money for projects that matter to them.We, at MetaGood, will use the platform to help in fundraising for our social innovation projects.
Why Is This Platform Important
Its very important to social innovation projects to scale up and proliferate in India to solve many of theproblems that we face. For a new social innovation project that someone wants to carry out, there areusually a few sources of funding:1.
 
Large foundations such as The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Skoll Foundation etc.2.
 
Fellowships available from sources such as Ashoka Innovators For The Public etc3.
 
The Indian government through its grant systems4.
 
Private trusts5.
 
Corporate CSR programs6.
 
Individual donationsThe application process is not automated or centralized. In addition to this, there are a few systemiclimitations that limit the ability of social innovators in raising funding:1.
 
Bureaucracy & Red Tape:
It takes a lot of time to get funding. Usually months or years passbetween writing grant applications and receiving the grant2.
 
Experience Is Essential:
Fellowships are given to people with established track record in socialimpact. People who are new to this field, don’t get any of this. This is akin to VCs funding onlyexperienced entrepreneurs and not first-timers3.
 
Funding Isnt Project Linked:
Because of the high transaction costs of funding individual projects,most funding goes to non-profits who then use it for a variety of activities – which may or maynot be very effective or even align to society’s needs.
