chief Director Carmelo Valmoria
sa pagsibak sa puwesto kay
Caloocan City police chief Senior Supt. Bernard Tambaoan
nitong Agosto 14 dahil sa cer-

tain deficiencies in administrative performance.

Nitong Martes ay sinibak din
ni Valmoria si Supt. Luis Francisco Jr., pinuno ng Station 11
ng Manila Police District, for

his failure to reduce crime incidents in his area of responsibility, ani Roxas.
The leadership of the NCRPO has sent a strong signal to
all chiefs of police and station
commanders in Metro Manila
that they will be relieved of
their posts if they cannot ...
bring down crime incidents in
their areas of responsibility,
anang kalihim.
Ngunit habang tinatanggal

pagkilala for his heroic act
nang makipagbarilan siya sa
dalawang naka-motor na nagnanakaw sa isang gasolinahan
sa Quirino Avenue, Quezon City,

Linggo ng gabi. Napatay niya

These areas were reported
to have seen a rise in crime incidents, including homicide,
theft and robbery, ani Roxas.

BUWELTA NI VP BINAY

REO Brothers Wow Beatle Fanatics at the Cavern

By Tom C. Banguis Jr
A "dream-come-true" gig at the Cavern Club, the legendary
Liverpool club, drew the "performance-of-a-lifetime" from
the Philippines' own Fab 4, the REO Brothers, who had the
predominantly British crowd, yelling for encores at the
conclusion of a tight 11-song set!
The lead singer of the Cavern Beatles, the house
band at the famed club, summed it all up in one
description: "FANTASTIC!"
Only 9 months ago, the REO Brothers arrived
heartbroken in Manila from Typhoon Yolanda's
devastation of their home province, Tacloban, virtually
penniless, armed only with their guitars, and the guts
to brave it out in a city that could be merciless to those
with no talent, but could be lavishly generous to those
who have! Since getting a break in a new, unknown
music lounge which led to an ABS-CBN Christmas TV
special, where they were the only performers accorded
a standing ovation, they have captivated audiences in
TV programs, corporate events, town fiestas, alumni
reunions of major schools, as well as in overseas
concerts in New York, California and Tokyo.
This night, however, was much more special than
all of those shows. The Cavern is where their idols, the
Beatles, started their own road to fame. Finally, the
REO Brothers have earned the invitation, and the
privilege, of performing on the same historic stage. No
other Philippine band have ever had the honor!
Friday evening, August 1st, was chilly on a Liverpool
summer night. Matthews St., where the Cavern Club is
located, obviously the favorite destination of locals and
tourists, had its usual heavy customer traffic,! Out in the
street, there was a steady stream of Beatle fans from all
over the world - Americans, Australians, Germans among
them, enjoying every moment savoring "photo-ops," from
the Club entrance with the familiar "Cavern" signage, as
well as pictures, posters, streamers, and even a Lennon
statue, vying for attention! Inside the Club, you feast your
eyes at the historic stage where the Beatles actually
performed, after going down a winding staircase, to the
basement several levels below the street. The historic
Beatle stage is a rather small, cramped elevated platform
in a hall crowded with fans jockeying for space in the
limited area, enjoying cocktails while waiting for the
evening's "live" performance.
It is, however, no longer the stage for the nightly
concerts of the Cavern Beatles, and similar other
tribute bands that get the rare opportunity of being
selected to sing their hearts out on the same venue!
Instead, there is now an extended annex in the same
basement, an expanded, separate private "Cavern
Lounge" which can seat possibly about 120-140
customers, and a satellite bar which can serve about 5060 more! For the pleasure of seating in the nightly Beatle
concerts, fans have to pay a separate, hefty entrance fee
to be accommodated. This is where the Cavern Beatles
perform nightly; this is where the REO Brothers shared
the stage on that eventful August 1st evening.
Arriving exhausted at the Cavern late in the
afternoon after a long 5 hour drive from London, there
was hardly enough time to do a sound check before the
show, with the Cavern Beatles taking their time
finishing their own, obviously getting the star
treatment from the Club. The REO Brothers managed
a 15-minute check, much shorter than their usual onehour allowance, and had to clear the stage because the
long queue outside the Lounge had to already be
accommodated for the standard 830PM gate opening.
At the dressing room shortly before going up the
stage for their 9PM set, the brothers held each other
and prayed together, while an SRO crowd anxiously
waited outside. This is, after all, a performance one
can only dream of when you start strumming a guitar

and humming your first Beatle song! A performance
which thousands of "wanna be" Beatle tribute bands
all over the world can only sigh of!
After a brief introduction of the band by this writer, the
crowd settled in their seats in anticipation of the opening
number. Beatle fanatics are probably the harshest critics
of tribute bands; they know Beatle songs by heart, and
can spot mediocre pretenders just from any song's
opening bars. They were there not to listen to a sob story
of the Tacloban disaster and the REO Brothers, but to
have a great night of Beatle music.
They were not disappointed! The reaction was
awesome!
From the opening, high energy number "Please
Please Me," the crowd showed their appreciation by
intently listening and then, clapping enthusiastically
after each Beatle favorite, which included "I Want to
Hold Your Hand," "Help," "Here Comes the Sun,"
"Come Together," "Two of Us," ""Octopus Garden," " I
Feel Fine" and others. The drinking crowd at the bar,
which had a little more space to move around, danced
vigorously to the rock and roll beat as they savored the
REO Brothers "sound-alike" renditions. At the
conclusion of their set with the closing number "All My
Loving," the crowd yelled for more numbers, but the
technician stuck with his guide sheet that showed only
11 songs, and dutifully, turned off the lights.
The Filipino crowd was all beaming with pride after
the performance, as the audience who had become
instant fans were still yelling for encores even after the
stage lights had been turned off. At the dressing room
shared with the Cavern Beatles, the house band
congratulated the boys for a great show, and later on,
told the crowd it was a "fantastic" performance.
The Filipinos in the SRO crowd included the UK Tour
promoters, Fil-Connect, with their indefatigable and
gracious principals Genesis "Jojo" Sanchez and Oliver
Bautista; long-time London resident and advertising
colleague Peps Villanueva; Manny de Guzman who flew
all the way from San Francisco to watch the REO Brothers
perform in the UK tour; Caloy Gigante, Fil-com Liverpool
leader; and Judith Jones, a Primos regular and big fan
from the Phlippines, together with a lively group of
"REOTICS" from Belfast who took an 8-hour boat ride to
be at the Cavern. Dave Lawrence, a British national who
has become a big fan after seeing the boys on "you tube"
drove with the Filipino promoters all the way from
London!
Special mention must be made of Fil-Connect's
Genesis "Jojo" Sanchez who arranged with Jon Keats of
the Cavern Club the very first performance of a Beatle
tribute band from the Philippines. Jon Keats immediately
approved of the REO Brothers when he saw the Araneta
Coliseum ABS-CBN Christmas TV Special performance of
the REO Brothers from "you tube."
Cavern Club, a historic milestone in the REO
Brothers inspiring journey from despair in the
aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda, to admiring audiences
in Manila, New York, California, Tokyo and now the
Cavern in Liverpool, a challenging dream-come-true,
matched with the performance of a lifetime!

The figure cited
by Mr. Renato Bondal
is totally false. Our
documents will prove
that and we will submit these documents

to the Senate blue ribbon committee, ani

Mendoza.
Sinabi ni Bondal sa
Senado noong Miyerkules na mahigit
P1,000 ang halaga ng

documents to prove
his claim that the
cakes were priced at
P1,000. The city government has all the
documents and the
purchases went

Joey Salgado, tagapagsalita ng lungsod.

Nauna nang nagsampa ng reklamo si
Bondal laban sa mga
Binay kaugnay ng
Makati parking building at ibang imprastraktura sa lungsod na
labis ang hinayag na
halaga.
Sinabi ng Commission on Audit noong
Miyerkules na magsasagawa ito ng isang

Resurgent Bombers seek

to keep streak vs Knights

OSE Rizal U coach Vergel Meneses has set high

standards for his team this season.

Even if the Heavy

Bombers have overachieved
with a 6-3 record at the end of
the first round of the 90th NCAA
basketball tournament, Meneses
was quick to remind his players
of their unfinished task.
How the Bombers respond to
their coachs challenge will be
known at 2 p.m. today when
JRU puts its strong run on the
line against dangerous Letran at
Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
St. Benilde collides with
Emilio Aguinaldo College in the
second game at 4 p.m.
The Blazers, who hope to

rise from a three-team logjam at

fourth spot, have won five of
their last six games to vault into
Final Four contention.
The Bombers are gunning for
a fifth straight win.
Our job is not finished,
said Meneses of the Bombers
who are gunning for a fifth
straight win. We have nothing
to celebrate about just yet because its just the first round
and were only halfway through
the season.
Philip Paniamogan has been
one of the players largely responsible for the Bombers turn-

around after a 2-3 start. The

Cagayan de Oro-born sniper
fired all of his 26 points in the
second half of the win over Mapua at the end of the first
round.
Tey Teodoro has also given
the Bombers stability at the
backcourt, showing poise under
pressure at the point guard position.
Paolo Taha, Mark Romero
and Jonathan Grey, who combined for 42 points an outing in
the first round, will spearhead
the Blazers even as the Generals
hope to finally put together a
winning streak after a lackluster
first round. CPT

Pinay gymnast 11th of 18 in YOG all-around

By June Navarro
NANJINGAva Lorein Verdeflor
performed below expectations
in the floor exercise and vault
and settled for 11th place in the
womens artistic gymnastics allaround finals of the 2014 Youth
Olympic Games late Wednesday
night at Nanjing Olympic Stadium Gymnasium.
The 15-year-old Verdeflor was

impressive in the uneven bars and

beam but struggled in the two
other events to finish with 49.000
points.
Im happy that Im here, but
Im kind of disappointed because I
could have done better, said
Verdeflor, who honed her skills at
the World Olympics Gymnastics
Academy in Plano, Texas.
She ranked seventh both in the
uneven bars (12.450 points) and

beam (12.850) but placed 16th

out of 18 finalists both in the vault
(12.900) and floor exercise
(11.600).
My first tumbling on the
floor, I landed on my hands,
said Verdeflor, who still has a
chance to secure a medal in the
uneven bars on Saturday. They
kind of bothered my ankles but
I tried to finish the best way I
could.

Cagayan, Army down semis

foes in Shakeys V-League
By Cedelf P. Tupas
DEFENDING champion Cagayan
Valley and top seed Army hammered out four-set victories yesterday and moved on the cusp of
a championship duel in the
Shakeys V-League Season 11
Open Conference at Filoil Flying
V Arena.
Sustaining their fine form, the
Lady Rising Suns overwhelmed
the PLDT Home Telpad Boosters,
25-11, 16-25, 25-14, 25-20 while
the Lady Troopers, with unheralded players stepping up, rallied from a set down to post a
24-26, 25-19, 25-20, 25-19 triumph over the Air Force Spikers.
Veterans Genie Sabas and
Joanne Bunag picked up the
slack for a struggling Rachel Ann
Daquis as Army gained the headstart in the semifinal series.
Daquis was rested after a

subpar opening set, opening the

door for Sabas and Bunag to
make an impact by combining
for 24 hits.
Im just happy that the two
from the bench stepped up,
said Army coach Rico de Guzman.
She looked tired so I just
rested her, added de Guzman
referring to Daquis, the teams
scorer with a 14-point norm.
Jovelyn Gonzaga paced the
Lady Troopers with 18 hits with
Mary Jean Balae and Nerissa
Bautista delivering 13 and 11,
respectively.
The victory moved Army closer to reclaiming the title it last
won three years ago. After an error-prone performance in the
first set, the Lady Troopers found
their groove anew with Sabas, a
recruit from Cebu, proving to be
a solid attacking option.
