Dear Church Family,
My gratitude goes out to all of
you! You generosity has made it
possible to meet all of the
necessary facets of our budget,
and so far we are right on track
for 2014. Surely this has all been
made possible due to your love
for our church and our mutual
goal to be an integral growing
part Christ's Universal Church.
Thank you!

But, have you noticed how many in our church devote not
only their money, but also their
time and talents. It always amazes me when I see those
who give so much of their time, all with the underlying
effort to help promote fellowship within our church and to
make Christ known and more visible in our community.
Surely their love of Christ must be their motivating factor.
All of these wonderful people give so much of their time,
while the Department of Labor and Statistics has docu-
mented that volunteerism in the United States dropped
1.1% in 2013. That may not sound like a lot, but when it is
62.6 million volunteers, that means a drop of over 688,000
people, not helping as they had last year! Fortunately,
this is not the case at Fountain Hills Presbyterian church!

The financial aspects of our church is certainly at the fore-
front of my thinking, but if you don't mind, I would ask
you to please bear with me for a moment as I deviate from
that. I would ask that you take a moment to look at the
picture of this little
girl and her dog. I
keep this picture on
the screen of my
computer as I feel it is
very profound. Look
at the happiness on
that beautiful face,
then look at the envi-
ronment she lives in.
You will have to look
very closely at the top
of the picture to no-
ticed the cross high
above it all. What a
statement this makes!

Certainly we won't see any pictures like this ever taken
in Fountain Hills, but still, there are many smiling
faces, young and old in our community that need the
Cross seen in their
"Picture." I feel confident that all those in our church
who unselfishly give their time, talents and money,
share in this common goal.

Income for July was only slightly off target, leaving Year-to-Date totals slightly
ahead of Plan. Expenses for July exceeded Plan, but due
primarily to the Church taking advantage of an energy-
saving program which required some up-front costs. But
this will pay dividends well into the future. Overall, a
solid performance for a mid-summer month.

The famous author and poet Maya
Angelou said I found that among it's
other benefits giving liberates the
soul of the giver. I personally have
found this to be true. The love and
warm feelings that come with the act
of giving to others in need is so over-
whelming. Jesus has told us on nu-
merous occasions that it is our re-
sponsibility to help those in need.
We here on the Mission Ministry Committee keep trying to
find those who are in need so that we can help them. If
you have a special mission you would like us to look into
helping, feel free to let us know or to join us on the Mis-
sion Ministry Committee.

Extended Hands Food Bank
With fall around the corner it is time to think about
Friday Fish Frys. Extended Hands has started their Fish
Frys again. This year they will only be serving 2 times a
month, the first and third Fridays from 4:00 7:00. We
will continue helping out on the first Fridays of the month.
If you would like to help at sometime, please let me (Terri)
know.
I want to extend a big thank you to all of you who
have so generously put money in the loose coin recepta-
cles on Sunday mornings. We got a note from Pastor
David Iverson thanking us for our contribution of
$3,191.35 this year to date. Not all of this came from the
loose coins, only $333.35 came from loose coins. The
rest came from our Christmas offerings last year. But it is
still nice to know that we have been able to help them so
much.
Thank you to all of you who continue to bring
canned and non perishable food each Sunday. All of this
food is greatly needed and appreciated.
Extended Hands is having an Open House on
October 4
th
to show their contributors their appreciation

.
They will be celebrating from 8 am to 11am, and will be
serving hot homemade cinnamon rolls and coffee.


Water for MANA House
As of August 4
th
we have collected 34 cases of
water for MANA House. Plus we received enough money
to purchase 50 more cases of water. Thank you for help-
ing us to help those Veterans who have served our coun-
try who are down on their luck. Water is such an impor-
tant part of our survival, yet it only cost pennies to save

someone who sacrificed so much so we can be free
and continue to worship our God.

School Supplies
Thank you for your generosity in your dona-
tions of school supplies. I was able to take a significant
amount of pencils, pens, paper, crayons, rulers, and
erasers to McDowell Mountain Elementary School.
When school started they were able to have things for
those kids in Fountain Hills who are in need of school
supplies. If you have already gotten school supplies
and have not brought them in yet, you can take them to
the office and we will make sure they get to the school.

S.W.A.T.T.
With the schools in full swing again, we will be
collecting for the High School snack packs. I have talked
to the school nurse and she has reported that she is in
need of several items. She said she needs Granola Bars,
Individual packs of cheese and crackers or peanut butter
and crackers. At this time she has enough juice, but she
is in need of the non-refrigerated chocolate milk. We will
keep you updated on what is needed as the school year
progresses. It is hard to believe in our small town there
could be High School students who do not get breakfast
or have anything for lunch. This mission project will help
those students fill their stomachs so they can concentrate
and learn.
As I close this section of the In Touch newslet-
ter, I want to close with a prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father give us the Leadership of Moses,
the Strength of Samson, the Praise of David, the Wisdom
of Solomon, and the Love of Jesus Christ.
Lord make our hearts full with a giving spirit so that we
can reach out and help those in need.

Flower Chart 2014
Flowers for the sanctuary may be ordered from the
church office in honor of, or in memory of, a loved
one. This is a very special way to show your love and
appreciation for others.

The flower chart is located in the Narthex just at the
entrance of the Sanctuary. Just put your name on the
date that is available and you would like. You may
take the flowers home after the service or let us know
to bring it to a homebound individual. The cost is still
only $35. There are many openings throughout the
year.

We honor special requests for a particular color or
kind of flower as you wish.

The coordinating team meets the first Friday of every month at 9 a.m. in the Adult Center. The meeting is open to all who have an
interest in the womens activities of the church. Since there may be some you are not acquainted with, I wanted to present our team

HOOKED ON BOOKS
The September meeting of Hooked on Books will be on
Wednesday, September 17th at 9:30 AM. The meeting
will be held in the home of Claire Cartmell.
Attendees will each report on books they have
read over the summer.
Hooked on Books meets on the 3rd
Wednesday of each month (September -
May) and is open to women who enjoy read-
ing and discussing books.

PW Fall Gathering

We are looking ahead to the Fall Gathering on Monday night, November 3rd. The speaker will be Marietta Bell, a
Fountain Hills resident. She has served as a language teacher Missionary in the Far East. She will share her experiences and the cus-
toms and traditions of the women of Mongolia and Tajikistan. Marietta has led a fascinating life and has an incredible story to tell.
Three of her memorable experiences are:
* Going down the Amazon River on her honeymoon
* Taking a 3-day trip on the Trans-Siberian railroad from
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia to Moscow; then taking a 10-day
boat trip on the Volga River from Moscow to St. Petersburg
* Visiting the Tsaatan tribe in northern Mongolia. The are called
the Reindeer People

but we hope you will mark your calendar now!

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION CONTINUES

SEPTEMBER 27, 2014 5:30 P.M.

Our Anniversary Committee awarded ourselves a vacation during the summer months, but we are now back hard at
work on our 40
th
Anniversary Year-long Celebration, and we are only halfway through our scheduled events.

Early in our Churchs history, potlucks were a common occurrence, so it seems fitting that we honor that tradition by
making our next event a potluck. To make it a little more interesting, we are going to add a movie for entertainment.
Our committee is busy reviewing movies to make sure we find something everyone will enjoy.

Make sure you schedule September 27 Potluck and Movie Night on your calendar. So that we can make sure to cover
all the food groups, potluck sign-ups will be September 7, 14
and 21 so that you can tell us if you are bringing a meat, vegeta-
ble, salad or dessert. We also need to have an idea of how many
will be attending.

In the coming weeks, you will be hearing more about our
November 8 Grand Finale and our Thanksgiving Day Parade
Float. The Thanksgiving Day Parade Float will be our GRAND,
GRAND FINALE, and we will be looking for lots of participation
from our Church Family.

Childrens Play Area Sun Screens
The Session and Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church (FHPC) Foundation Board of Trustees approved participa-
tion in the Childrens Play Area Sun Screen project. Funding for the project was through the Foundation desig-
nated Christian Formation category in conjunction with a special gift to the Church. The sun screen was the first
Foundation funded project for our Church. Your gifts to the Foundation will help insure the future needs and
ministries of the Church for years to come.

The childrens play area sun screen provides a shaded space protecting the children from the hot Arizona sun thus
reducing their chances of painful sunburn. In addition, the sun screen helps reduce dehydration while providing a
comfortable place for them to play.

The sun screen was purchased and installed by Ace of Shades Sunscreens and Canopies LLC. It consists of 5
beige posts, 3 desert sand/deep ochre sails and covers an area approximately 2800 x 30. In digging the eight
foot holes for the posts, extreme, massive hard rock areas were encountered requiring heavy machinery to do the
job.

Throughout Scripture we are taught by
word and example how to grow in our
knowledge of Christian living. We are
charged to be a learning community.

September: For me this month is one of
transition end of the official summer
and yet not quite fall. It remains hot and
yet provides the promise of cooler
weatherin the future. Many of our
Church family, who are away from Ari-
zona , are beginning to think about re-
turning. Not quite sure when to trust the
weather will cool off and the humidity
end. It is also the month to begin to plan
on the new season of learning and study
opportunities awaiting us.

Please consider the following opportuni-
ties as a beginning to your Christian
growth:

Hosea is almost completed. The lunch
time study has been attended by no less
than 24 people each Wednesday. We
look forward to another noon time Bible
Study by Pastor Bill.
Presbyterian Women will resume their
new Bible Studies. The various Circles,
Team meetings and Hooked on Books
resumes. Ladies, please consider joining
one of the Circles by contacting Ilene
Berg.

Mens Fellowship will begin a new sea-
son of activities of interest to the men of
our Church community. Of special inter-
est to all of us ladies will be the Sweet-
heart Brunch in February. Men, sign up
with Norm Collins.

spiritual guidance for the teaching and
learning process.

IS LIFE MEANINGLESS?
If the deep and perplexing issues of
life intrigue you, take a look as we
study Ecclesiastes but be prepared
for a few surprises. Ecclesiastes is
part of the wisdom literature of the
Old Testament (the Hebrew Bible).
The Hebrews used Ecclesiastes as a
book of instruction. It showed them
how to find spiritual significance in
a life that would otherwise be mean-
ingless.
Ecclesiastes offers a philosophy of
life. On the surface, it seems to chal-
lenge essential biblical truths. It
dares to face hard questions. It offers
a glimpse of the secular mind. It
shows the un-glamorized life of a
sinful world. It looks at suffering
and struggles to find meaning in it
all.
Join those of us who are willing to
ask difficult questions and seek an-
swers together. Sabbath Day Bible
Study will begin this fall on Sunday,
September 14
th
at 10:15 a.m. in the
Adult Center. Coffee will be avail-
able and CLAF will provide us with
some goodies for us to enjoy as
we study the word of God as it is
found in Ecclesiastes. Come and
bring your family and friends as we
study and fellowship together.

sion in many, if not most, churches today. Christian
education has always provided great material about
the Bible, Christian morality, justice, doctrine and
theology. Discipleship models provided teaching of
what to believe, how to act, participate in worship,
witness, serve, and work on a committee or minis-
try. But is this all that our spiritual life is about?
Does this type of discipleship produce the kind of
personal and corporate spiritual transformation and
growth necessary to meet the complexities and un-
certainties of today? Why is research showing there
is no correlation between people attending church
and /or serving in church ministries and spiritual
growth? Does this provide persons of all ages who
live meaningful, powerful and productive Kingdom
lives? Why are so many disillusioned or bored with
church? How do we grow spiritually and is it differ-
ent in the various ages/stages of our lives and
church life?

Many realize we need to remember or return to the
goal and process of spiritual formation for spiritual
growth and maturity of individuals and communities-
our individual and corporate spiritual journeys.
Some have termed it whole life Christian Spiritual
Formation. Christian Formation includes and high-
lights spiritual and faith formations goal and proc-
ess in all ages while valuing and working with of all
aspects of Christian Education.

This was an intentional change of language as we
intentionally began our journey together. I need fel-
low companions in a community hungry to grow
spiritually. Therefore, to return to understand the
difference from the traditional Christian Education
(and Discipleship) and Christian Formation is impor-
tant.

Christian Formation keeps the elements of Christian
Education, but under grids all of these with and in-
cludes an emphasis on personal and communal
spiritual formation that continues beyond disciple-
ship. This on-going spiritual formation supports
discipling that equips believers for ministry and the

character formation. But its goal is deeper and
wider; the process is has many variations but is in
every stage of life and faith. So, simply, the differ-
ence may be found in the goal and process of spiri-
tual formation and maturity. I will address this in the
next newsletter.

For now, let us remember Gods goal of spiritual for-
mation is to bring people in every stage of life into a
deeper, more intimate and meaningful love relation-
ship with Him through Jesus Christ. It is in the sim-
plicity of the desire for an experiential, love relation-
ship with God that the ability to listen to His voice
develops and the desire to practice following His
leadings happens. It is in the relationship that God
does the transformation of the soul and the result is
an attitude and action from within (attitudes and ac-
tions that Christian Education taught about and pro-
vided opportunities to do)!

In this complex world today, I desire the spiritual
growth from infancy through the end stage of earthly
life for people. It is one thing to learn about, know
and even do what Jesus would do. It is another
thing that out of a love relationship one learns to lis-
ten and follow Jesus in the moments and events of
life. Individuals and faith communities can learn to
discern and follow Him in deeper, more meaningful
ways as we mature spiritually individually and to-
gether! We need each other. What better way to re-
joice in seeing Gods presence and actions, face
challenges and make decisions!

Becoming A Prayer Warrior
We live in a dangerous world! Wars in the Middle East,
threats of terrorism, weather events destroying homes
through floods, tornadoes, forest fires. Families falling
apart, a Congress paralyzed to solve problems...children
committing suicide, violence in the schools. And, of course,
all the serious health concerns as we age. The world and the
church need us to become prayer warriors.

Please join us in a study--"Becoming A Prayer Warrior." .
We'll be "Praying Like Jesus"; interceding like Moses; pour-
ing our hearts out to God with David in the Psalms; discov-
ering Paul's power prayers in Ephesians and Philippians and
more...

Interesting VBS Facts:
- the winners of the VBS Give It Away draw-
ing were Trey Zukowski and Davin Eckenroth. Each
were given a gift certificate for indoor sky diving at
Sky Adventure!

- 63 out of the 100 VBS participants were
not regular attendees of either Church of the Ascen-
sion or Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church.

- Our energetic VBS mission leader, Susan
Owens, was led by the Holy Spirit and inspired chil-
dren to bring in $522.78 for the Kid to Kid Project.
This will allow 210 children in India to receive safe,
drinking water and a place to wash hands at school
for a year. The kids also brought in bottled water for
St. Vincent DePaul to help with the local hydration
needs.

Light humor

One regular church attendant arrived early in a big city church and sur-
prised everyone when he went to the front row and sat alone in the middle.
At the end of the service the preacher asked him what that was all about.
He answered, Ive had a terrible week. I got pushed to the back of a
crowded bus. I waited in line to eat lunch. The only place you can be alone
is on the front row of the Church.


What matters most
When you are in the final days of your life, what will you want? Will
you hug that college degree in the walnut frame? Will you ask to be carried
to the garage so you can sit in your car? Will you find comfort in rereading
your financial statement? Of course not. What will matter then will be peo-
ple. If relationships will matter most then, shouldnt they matter most now?

Arlene return from their visit to Europe, Ron Waldo,
musical guest, Michael Pizzuto and finally, a very
special thanks to Patsy Knoy for filling in while Doro-
thy was away, playing such wonderful selec-
tions. We are truly a fortunate church, enjoying such
a variety of musical talent. I would like to continue
having special selections offered by our talented mu-
sicians through-out the year as others return to fill
our congregation. So often those returning to our
church for the winter months miss what we hear,
which are sincere performances of music selected to
glorify God.

Celebration Singers, Celebration Ringers, Pear-
wood Recorders, all begin rehearsals this month.

I look so forward to the weekly routine, engaging with
all of you to make music. It is something I have done
most of my life, and I absolutely love it. Those of us
who have sung and played in organized groups know
the good feeling it brings. It's so amazing to know
the health benefits that music brings us, releasing
dopamine, raising oxytocin levels, lowering cortisol
levels, releasing serotonin. Studies have shown that
music even generates prolactin which has a tranquil-
izing, consoling effect, and this is why even sad mu-
sic makes us feel better, which even when singing
about death, it's good for you. Researchers have
also discovered an increase in an immunoglobulin
that enhances our immune system when we
sing. Who knew that was what was making us feel
so good? I do love a good rehearsal, though, and
look forward to seeing everyone September 11,
same times as usual. If you are planning on joining
us, you will find those times in the bulletin, printed up
weekly with the rest of the wonderful things this
church has to do. Feel free to call me if you have
questions at 688-0828. I accept texts as well. We
have a wonderful season to look forward to.

A Story about Flowers
Once upon a time, a couple decided to have flowers placed on the chancel of their church on Sunday morn-
ing. Members of the congregation have the option of picking a Sunday and providing the flowers for the
worship service. After worship they are welcome to take the flower arrangement home and enjoy it for how-
ever long it lasts. This couple (lets call them Art and Jo-Anne) chose not to take the flowers home. They
asked that the flowers be delivered to another member of the church who happened to be in a nursing facil-
ity.
The church secretary decided not to wait and brought the flowers herself that Monday morning to the nurs-
ing facility. As the secretary went by the front desk, the desk clerk exclaimed, Oh what beautiful flowers.
The lady (lets call her Claire) who was to receive the flowers was so thrilled that the couple had thought of
her. She asked the secretary to thank them. However, Claire was allergic to scent and could not keep the flowers in her room. So the church
secretary took them back to the front desk of the nursing home and asked who else might enjoy them.
The desk clerk knew just the person who would love to get flowers. So the church secretary took them to another patient (lets call her Una).
Una was so very happy to get the flowers that she was almost in tears. She asked, Who can I thank, my hand writing is so very shaky. The
secretary told her, no thanks are necessary, we are just so glad you can enjoy them. The secretary left the nursing facility with a huge smile on
her face.
Just one arrangement of flowers made six people very happy!

Mary Jo Roy
Mary Jo was born in Dayton, Ohio.
She grew up in a small town outside
of Dayton, Phillipsburg and gradu-
ated from the Ohio State University.
Mary Jo and Jim have lived in Foun-
tain Hills since June 1988.
She has an older sister and two
younger brothers.
Mary Jo has been happily married to Jim for 40 years.
Her first job was working in a Meat Market. Not at all
enjoyable when you consider the smells and general
surroundings. It was only for the summer and provided
spending money for college.
Her most rewarding job was teaching. Working with
children was the best time of her life. In those days there
were not all the regulations we have today from the gov-
ernment. Children and parents had respect for teachers.
Mary Jo and Jim have been members of Fountain Hills
Presbyterian Church since February of 2002.
A most interesting period in her teaching career was
teaching a Charm School for 45 fourth and fifth grade
girls as an after school event. It was a very rewarding
experience.
When asked if she had ever had a life changing experi-
ence, Mary Jo stated that, Every day is a life changing
experience.
The best advice she was given was, always do your best;
respect and appreciate others.
The people who most impacted her life were her par-
ents, family and husband. In turn, Mary Jo has had the
most influence on her children.
When asked, what would be your best advice to someone
today, she responded, Be yourself, treat others as you
want to be treated and be ready to lend a helping hand.
When asked what she liked best about our church, Mary
Jo replied that she likes the people here the best.

Jim and Mary Jo wish to express their sincere apprecia-
tion to everyone for the many thoughts, prayers, cards
and best wishes during Jims recent hospitalization.

Hospitalized? Call the church!

If you are sick, hospitalized or home recovering from ill-
ness, we want you to call the church and let us know! In a con-
gregation like ours where people leave in droves for extended
summer months, it is easy for the staff, elders and deacons to
assume, when we dont see someone, that they are simply
vacationing away. The truth is that some of you are sick and
we are not aware of it.
You can help us by simply letting one of the staff know of your
situation. We have an excellent support system in place due to
the diligent efforts of our deacons. Help us serve you by com-
municating your situation.
