Did anti-American sentimentplay into the guilty verdict forAmerican exchange studentAmanda Knox? Her family and a prominent U.S.senator are crying foul.Knoxwas sentenced last week to 26yearsin prison for murdering herBritish roommate during adrunken sex game.Sen. Maria Cantwell, fromKnox’s home state of Washington, says she has“seriousquestions about the Italian justicesystem and whether anti-Americanism tainted this trial”and said she plans to pursue thatwith U.S. and Italian officials. Her family has said they willappeal, and her father Curt Knoxsaid unfavorable media coverageled to the guilty verdict.“Frankly, I believe it was thehuge media perception andliterally the characterassassination that took place of her, and a completely different judicial system where jurors and judges are not sequestered,” hesaid onNBC’s “Today” show onMonday.Criminal defense lawyerTheodore SimontoldABC’s“Good Morning America”showthat the evidence against Knoxwas scant. “The real problemhere was … an avalanche of negative pretrial publicity, combined with an enormousamount of negative characterassassination,” Simon said.Judy Bachrach, who has coveredthe case for Vanity Fair, saidsome jurors said they foundKnox guilty before the trialended. “There is the feeling thatshe is the classic Americanseductress. She’s been called inthe newspapers a vampire, apraying mantis, and these are allforms of anti-Americanism,” shesaid on ABC.What do you think? Click here for more Reuterspolitical coveragePhoto: REUTERS/AlessandroBianchi American universitystudent Amanda Knox arrives incourt for her murder trial inPerugia December 4, 2009.

As if we didn't have enough withfrightening planetary sounds, artistKatie Patersonhas recordedthe chilling crackles of threeIcelandic glaciers. Nothingspecial there... until you learnthat she did it on 45rpm recordsmade with actual ice.Katie pressed the record againstre-frozen ice plates instead of vinyl. Then she played them intwo turntables until they meltedover the course of two hours.Update: Reader WolfgangOblasser wrote to say thatAustrian artist ClaudiaMärzendorfer also uses ice forpressing records.I know, pointless.
