1. Overview

___________________________________________________________________________
Fruit and Vegetable Sector has much potential to contribute to increase the level of national
income, export revenue, generate new employment opportunities, increase farm income and
enhancethenutritionandhealthofthepeople.Thepotentialforcultivatingfruitandvegetable
cropsforthedomesticandexportmarketsishigh.
Sri Lankas per capita consumption of fruits and vegetables remains far below the required
averagedailyintake.Forexampletherecommendeddailyintake ofvegetablesisatleast200g
vegetables, but an average Sri Lankan consumes only about 94g per day, way below the
recommendedlevel.OnthebasisoftheMedicalResearchInstitute(MRI)recommendation,per
capitaavailabilityofselectedvegetableshastobeincreased to80kg/yearby2010.According
toMRI thedaily per capitarequirementof fruits for abalanced diet should be3040g (edible
portion), which is approximately equivalent to 2540 kg fresh fruit per head per year. To
achieveamoderatetargetof40kgPCCbytheyear2010,totalfruitproductionshouldincrease
to995,712t,assuming20%wastage.Witheconomicgrowthandincreasingincomelevelsofthe
peopleinSriLankatherewillbeincreasingdemandforfruitsandvegetablesinthelocalmarket
andthesupplyhastobeincreasedasindicatedabovetomatchtheincreasingdemand.
The opening up of the North and the East, which are mainly agriculture producing areas
increases the potential to grow fruits and vegetables in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan fruits and
vegetables are in high demand abroad. However, a major challenge faced by exporters is not
lack ofdemandbutfinding exportablequality fruitsandvegetables insufficient quantities for
export.
The sector is dominated by small scale informal farmers and a major source of income and
employmentintheregions.Thegovernmenthasrecognizedtheneedtogettheformalprivate
sector involved in this sector, specially in the areas of processing, developing seed and plant
materialandprovisionofmoderntechnology,machinery,equipmentandotherrelatedservices.
