LETTER FROM THE TE

magazine
A life worth living

Because we dont know when we will die, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well. Yet everything happens only a certain number of times, and a very small
number really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of
your childhood, an afternoon that is so deeply a part of your being that you cant
even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four, five times more, perhaps not
even that. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps 20.
And yet it all seems limitless. Paul Bowles, The Sheltering Sky

Why are you running?

Our culture is obsessed with the concept of being busy. As a result, ours is a
hurried existence. Once the morning alarm blares, we race from the moment we
step out of bed to the moment we collapse back into it.
The more rushed your day, the more important you are. The more hours you
spend at work, the more dedicated you are. The more time you take moving, doing,
working, going the less time you have to ponder whether you are truly fulfilled.
As a nation, we boast of our greatness, yet a dismally small fraction of our days
are truly devoted to being happy. We survive solely for the weekend, the next
vacation, the upcoming holiday, the newest gadget. But when youre constantly
waiting for the next big thing, how many sunrises, embraces from your child,
smiles from your partner, walks in the park, enjoyable conversations, cuddles
with your pet and phone calls with an old friend have you missed?
When did you last live in the moment? When did you last feel the joy and
limitless possibility of life itself?

Take this moment and make it better

Imagine our world with a little less busy and a little more happiness. What if we
all spent a little more of our days focused on self-fulfillment? When were happy,
were better able to make others happy too.
You can be the spark that makes this happen. Make a promise right now
to focus on the moment; to experience joy and to share it with others.
If this task is daunting, the articles in the following pages can help. Our writers and
advertisers offer tips to help you and yours live well. Learn how to practice mindfulness and stay healthy enough to make the best of your time on this earth. By doing so,
you can make a positive difference in the lives of all whom you encounter.
Live today, dont just survive it. Remember: That new smartphone, the TV, the
last email at work can wait. Your happiness and well-being shouldnt have to.

Dental X-rays:
Whats
the point?

By Edwin Batchelor, DDS, FAGD

ental X-rays are pictures of the teeth,

bones and soft tissues around them,
and are done to help find problems
with the teeth, mouth and jaw. X-ray pictures
can show cavities, hidden dental structures
(such as wisdom teeth) and bone loss that
cannot be seen during a visual examination.
Dental X-rays are scheduled when you need
them based on your age, risk for disease and
signs of disease.

Types of dental X-rays

Intraoral X-rays (taken inside the

mouth) are the most common type of
dental X-ray taken. These X-rays provide
a lot of detail and allow your dentist to
find cavities, check the health of the tooth
root and bone surrounding the tooth,
check the status of developing teeth, and
monitor the general health of your teeth
and jawbone.

lower back teeth and how the teeth

touch each other in a single view.
These X-rays are used to check for
decay between the teeth and to show
how well the upper and lower teeth
line up. They also show bone loss
when severe gum disease or a dental
infection is present.
Periapical X-rays show the entire
tooth, from the exposed crown to the
end of the root, and the bones that
support the tooth. These X-rays are
used to find dental problems below
the gum line or in the jaw, such as
impacted teeth, abscesses, cysts,
tumors and bone changes linked to
some diseases. A full-mouth series of
periapical X-rays (about 14 to 21 X-ray
films) is most often done during a
persons first visit to the dentist.
www.naturespathways.com

(CT) provides three-dimensional

images. The cone-beam CT is particularly useful for dental implant selection and placement.
In adults, dental X-rays can be used to:
Show areas of decay that may not be
visible with an oral exam, especially
small areas of decay between teeth
Identify decay occurring beneath an
existing filling
Reveal bone loss that accompanies
gum disease
Reveal changes in the bone or in the
root canal resulting from infection
Assist in the preparation of tooth
implants, braces, dentures or other
dental procedures
Reveal an abscess (an infection at the
root of a tooth or between the gum
and a tooth)
Reveal other developmental abnormalities, such as cysts and some types
of tumors
In children, dental X-rays are used to:
Watch for decay
Determine if there is enough space in
the mouth to fit all incoming teeth:
primary or permanent
Check for the development of wisdom
teeth and identify if the teeth are impacted (unable to emerge from the gums)

X-ray radiation exposure

Occlusal X-rays show the roof or floor

of the mouth and are used to find extra

teeth, teeth that have not yet broken
through the gums, jaw fractures, a cleft
in the roof of the mouth (cleft palate),
cysts, abscesses or growths.

Extraoral X-rays (taken outside the

mouth) are used to look for impacted
teeth, monitor growth and development
of the jaws in relation to the teeth, and
www.naturespathways.com

identify potential problems between teeth

and jaws and the temporomandibular joint
(TMJ) or other bones of the face.
Panoramic X-rays show a broad view
of the jaws, teeth, sinuses, nasal area
and temporomandibular (jaw) joints.
These X-rays show problems such as
impacted teeth, bone abnormalities,
cysts, solid growths (tumors), infections and fractures.
Cone-beam computed tomography

On average, Americans receive a radiation

dose of between 2.0 and 4.5 millisieverts
each year. Half of this is from natural
sources such as the sun, the stars, radioactive materials such as rock and soil, and
drinking water. The other half is from
man-made sources such as X-rays, nuclear
medical procedures, television, tobacco
and smoke detectors. The importance of
dental X-rays for a persons overall health
far outweighs the minimal exposure to the
radiation received.

which has locations in Madison and
Cottage Grove. Dr. Batchelor graduated from the University of Missouri at
Kansas City School of Dentistry. He is certified in oral

phobias or fear of treatment. Batchelor is on the board
of directors for the Wisconsin Academy of General
Dentistry. For more information, call 608-318-4350

Different ways
of interpreting
health
and illness

By Jed Downs

here are multiple ways of understanding human health

and disease. The standard medical approach seeks to
take what is known and piece things together in an effort
to construct a model that explains how things are to build a
Lego model or a jigsaw puzzle from small bits of information.
The osteopathic mode of understanding is different. It seeks to
comprehend the whole and the relationship of its parts. Without
such understanding, the movement of life cannot be held with the
reverence it deserves.
Both ways of thinking have their value and insights. Medicine
rightly finds the primary cause of infectious disease to be bacteria or viruses. Medical science discovered that when the infectious agent can be killed or prevented from contacting potential
victims, an infectious disease can be eliminated. Late in his career,
Louis Pasteur proposed le terrain est tout, which Google translates from French as the terrain is everything. This is recognition
that the condition of the body and the tissues influence whether
or not an infection can get a foothold. (It may also imply that
preparation of individuals with vaccines can prevent disease.)
The idea of anatomy as a terrain is consistent with the osteopathic way of thinking about health and prevention of disease. Most

people recognize the role of stress in becoming susceptible to a cold

or flu infection. The stress may be emotional, due to lack of sleep or
prolonged exposure to the elements, etc. Stress in some way alters
the terrain of the body to make it more susceptible to infection.
Dysfunctions or lesions in the body that alter the flow of nutrition
or removal of waste products can also prevent the immune system
from reaching a target, leaving a region of the body susceptible to
infection. These dysfunctions can take on different forms. The issue
may be a problem with the spine that impacts the nervous system,
impacting the tone of the blood vessels, which in turn causes poor
nutrition to the tissues the blood vessels supply. The lesion may be
a distortion of a joint, which causes tension in the fascia (connective tissues), creating a constriction or log jam that prevents normal
blood flow. This can be a problem with the arterial blood reaching an area or it can be a problem with venous or lymphatic return
that leads to a stagnant region where microorganisms can flourish.
Examples include pneumonia from a restricted rib that impacts the
local lymphatic pumping of the adjacent lung tissue and sinusitis as
an opportunistic infection from poor pumping of the sinuses via
rhythmic motions of the cranium.
The approaches to treatment in standard medicine versus
that of osteopathy differ as a result of these differences. A child
with earaches may be treated with antibiotics, tubes through the
eardrums to help the middle ear drain, antihistamines to reduce
swelling from allergic reactions, or removal of lymph tissue that
can block the drainage point or Eustachian/auditory tube. The
www.naturespathways.com

traditional osteopathic approach would be directed at establishing or restoring the normal mechanical relationships of the bones
that make up the base of the skull. The Eustachian tube has a bony
portion in the temporal bone (the bone that the ear attaches to)
and then a cartilaginous portion, either of which can be distorted
by mechanical stress. The stress of the bony portion can come
from tension from adjacent skull bones or from tension in the
muscles that attach to it. Stress on the cartilaginous portion comes
from unbalanced tension of the muscles in the back of the throat,
which may be secondary to asymmetry of their bony attachments.
The osteopathic approach is to restore balance of joint contacts
and balance of muscle and connective tissue tension which allows
the Eustachian tubes to drain the ear and to equalize the pressure
between the middle ear and the back of the throat. This eliminates
the conditions that create a cavity full of fluid that supports bacterial growth, allowing the ear infection to develop. Commonly the
distortion of the base of the skull comes from the forces of labor
and delivery or other traumas to the flexible head of the child.

Remembering
our
pets

By Katie Hilst, DVM

eath comes to us all, and every

culture has a unique way of
dealing with death. Common to
many cultures is the act of remembering
the dead. The definition of remembering is
to have or to bring in ones mind an awareness of someone one has seen, known or
experienced in the past. Remembering is
also defined as to make an effort to keep a
person (or pet) in ones mind. Remembering is important to grieving, and grieving
is necessary to heal a loss.
Acknowledgement of our loss is the first
step toward healing. Remembering our
pets helps us to face our loss and gives us
the chance to find closure by coming to
terms with our new reality the one we
live in without our beloved pet.
Remembering and retelling the stories
of our pets we have lost in a safe place, with
people who are supportive can help us
move through our grief. I have found the
acts of talking about my lost loved one and
sharing stories has helped my mind accept
loss. Our remembrances can be a shared
experience and can link together families,
friends, co-workers and strangers.
Remembering our pets can help us feel
the pain of the loss. Feeling pain is necessary and to cut off the pain may result in
it showing up as illness or depression. We
release pain through crying and laughing.
These actions both help our bodies release
tension and anger.
Remembering our pets can help us adjust
to our new normal. Our pets loss may
cause changes to our physical and social
surroundings. Gone are the trips to the dog

loss with other pet
lovers in a safe place
can help you establish new friendships
and connections.
Remembering
our pets and treasuring their memories may help us let
go of the emotional
energy we have
put into our grief.
The emotions, over
time, will be less painful. Grief is part of a
normal healing process, and every person
has a unique way of feeling and expressing
their grief.
You may have a ritual for remembering
what is important to you. Perhaps your
ritual involves lighting a candle, visiting a
special place your pet loved or making a
donation in your pets name.
I invite you to an annual ritual: taking
part in Remembering Our Pets on
National Pet Memorial Day. This year, it is
being held on Sunday, Sept. 14, from 1 to
2:30 p.m. at Dane County Humane Society,
5132 Voges Road in Madison. This is a
time to remember, tell stories, cry, laugh
and connect with other pet lovers in a safe
environment. Bring a picture and/or story,

Hooponopono

By Daren Pagenkopf

ooponopono is a spiritual practice to set things right and

restore pono (balance). Traditionally, it is practiced by a family nightly,
but can also be done individually. It is a
process of mental cleansing, where problems and conflicts are resolved by a family
through the following steps: pule (prayer),
discussion, reflection, confession, repentance, forgiveness, mutual restitution,
release, severance and thanksgiving. A
hooponopono practice is vital for restoring
physical, mental, emotional and spiritual
well-being for an individual and family.
Blocks to peace, growth, healing and right

relationships are often held in unresolved

conflict and forgiveness.
Hooponopono is always practiced with
a right, loving heart. It is not about blame
or holding fast to the fault, but about
restoring balance in relationships, life, the
body and with God. It is about honestly
expressing and acknowledging feelings,
hurts, wounds and our shortcomings.
Once that has been realized and achieved,
a person can begin being an active participant in taking responsibility for healing
themselves and the world, releasing those
involved and letting go.
The hooponopono process can be as

Do you
desire
prosperity?

By Dan Conlon

The starting point of all achievement is DESIRE. Keep this

constantly in mind. Weak desire brings weak results, just as a small
fire makes a small amount of heat.
A BURNING DESIRE TO BE, AND TO DO is the starting point
from which the dreamer must take off.

Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill

ost of us want to live a life that is deeply satisfying;

where it is common to do the things we desire without
concern for the time or the money it might require. A
desire for a prosperous life lies within us. I consider this a universal truth of humanity. We may each define our vision of prosperity
differently, of course, but it is part of the human condition to seek
greater fulfillment and progress.
All of us possess an inner drive to live a life where we enjoy
abundance, freedom and self-reliance. Our collective history is
one of an ever-advancing society and culture. Desire is the starting point for this journey to prosperity.

Desire is deep yearning, the

fire of passion and becoming
energized for achievement
that stimulates the release
of our human potential.
There is a difference between wanting something and developing a white-hot burning desire for the attainment of that dream.
Desire is deep yearning, the fire of passion and becoming energized
for achievement that stimulates the release of our human potential.
This level of desire is one of the most potent powers in the
universe for creating results. This powerful force to create what
our heart desires is right there within us, waiting to be summoned.
Consider the meaning of this quote from Think and Grow Rich:
The oak sleeps in the acorn. The bird waits in the egg, and in the
highest vision of the soul, a waking angel stirs. DREAMS ARE THE
SEEDLINGS OF REALITY.
Movement toward our desired level of prosperity starts with our
thoughts. Our thinking influences every condition in our lives;
change your thoughts and change your experience, change your
experiences and change your life. You may be asking yourself: If it
is just this easy, why is it that most people do not enjoy a greater
success and wealth? Great question. There are conditions that hold
us back from reaching our full economic and personal potential:
www.naturespathways.com

1. It simply doesnt enter our consciousness that it is possible

to become wealthy. We think success is for someone else,

another class of people. Perhaps no one in our family or
center of influence has ever reached financial success; so there
are no role models to follow.
2. A clear decision to achieve wealth is never made. Consequently,
the desire for attainment is weak and any attempts to figure
it out or find someone who is successful and ask her how she
did it lacks conviction.
3. Our habits hold us back. Habits of thought and behavior
interfere with progress. We need to overcome procrastination,
resistance to change and fear of failure.
As we fuel our desires into a white-hot burning blaze, we find
the energy, stamina and courage to act. As we act, we develop the
habits of delayed gratification and self-discipline. We willingly
choose to pay the price of achieving success and begin to experience more confidence, self-reliance and prosperity.

Try a new income vehicle

If you are like 95 percent of the U.S. population, you have a job with a
clearly defined job description and a defined/limited level of earnings
potential. According to the American Community Survey Census,
the median household income in the United States was $51,371 in
2012, the latest data available. You have two choices: Decrease your
living expense to a small percentage of your income or grow your
income. If your definition of prosperity is $100,000 per year, you
will need a new income vehicle. A job will simply not provide the
required advancement to reach your goal. Consider a home-based
business. It can provide the vehicle you need for this advancement.
In 1988, I started a part-time home-based business that I still
have today. My goal was to earn $52,000 per year within two years,
a little more than my $30,000-per-year job. I met this two-year
goal within six months. Within two years, I was earning more
than $30,000 per month. This experience is not uncommon in
home-based business. A home-based business can be that new
income vehicle that changes things for you too. I share this with
you to impress upon you the importance of good decisions and
the power of desire a white-hot burning desire.
DESIRE backed by FAITH, pushed reason aside, and inspired me
to carry on.
If you are looking for prosperity, Hills Think and Grow Rich has
influenced millions around the world. Use the principles outlined
in this book. The formula works.

Does organic
mean
safer?

By Julia McConahay

he most common question I get asked as the owner of a

chemically aware business is Do you use all-organic products? My response is always an honest no, followed by an
explanation as to why I choose specific products for the salon.
The most important aspect of product usage in any industry
is its safety for the client and professional. Sometimes there are
ingredients that are safer for one individual than another. There
are some clients who are sensitive to petroleum-based products,
and some who have severe allergies to pure coconut oil or other
pure botanicals. Some clients develop allergies and sensitivities
over time due to repeated use of a product or ingredient, while
others may have a reaction to a product or ingredient immediately after first contact. The true key to finding the safest products
is learning as much as you can about your own body and how it
responds to external influences.
Words like herbal, natural, even organic have no legal
definition on cosmetics labels. That means that anybody can put

16

Natures Pathways | September 2014

anything in a bottle and call it natural and they do, according

to the Organic Consumers Association. The U.S. Department of
Agricultures organic sector has come up with a term for this issue:
organic fraud.
To date, there are no regulations imposed on health and beauty
products by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. According
to Dr. Linda Katz, director for the Office of Cosmetics and Colors
for the FDA, Cosmetics and colors are regulated in a post-market
arena. We dont get to see an application for a product or ingredient before the product is marketed. What we do is we look at
safety issues once the product is in the marketplace.
Therefore, no accountability is required of manufacturers until
a complaint is made or a compliance issue is discovered. According to the FDA, it is the responsibility of cosmetic manufacturers to ensure, before marketing their products, that the products
are safe when used as directed in their label or under customary
conditions of use.
Due to this lack of regulation, there is no accountability for
companies to ensure truthful labeling. Some companies take it
upon themselves to create testing standards for their products and
promote themselves as such.
www.naturespathways.com

Does organic mean chemical-free?

Humans are surrounded by chemicals every day: in and on the

clothes we wear, in the foods we eat, and in the air we survive on.
The primary definition of a chemical is, a substance produced by
or used in a chemical process. By this definition, even water is a
chemical. Do you consider water to be organic? If so, then water
is an organic chemical.
According to basic chemistry textbooks, any molecule containing a carbon atom is considered to be organic. So which is it? Is
the organic nature of something defined by its chemical makeup
or by the conditions it is created under? Is water then considered
not organic because it doesnt contain carbon? It seems as though
the definition we put the most weight in is the latter. Consumers want to know if a certain product was created or cultivated
without the use of manmade, harmful and synthetic chemicals.
So, returning to the question about organic hair products, it
should be noted that every single hair product (organic, natural or
otherwise) performs a physical and chemical process on the hair.
Permanent hair color works by physically opening up the outer
cuticle layer on the hair and chemically depositing new pigment into
the cortex. Some color products actually lift the natural hair color
out of the cortex before depositing the replacement pigment. Semipermanent hair color products coat the outside of the hair strand
with pigment which is washed away over the course of some weeks.
Most of the hair color products on the market are saturated with
fragrance to mask the undesirable smell of ammonia and other
chemicals (organic or synthetic) present in the formula. A chemical
process is also in play when applying any shampoo or conditioner
to the hair. The basic pH of shampoo causes the cuticle layer to
lift, releasing trapped oil and particles from the hair strand as the
shampoo is massaged on the scalp, while conditioner has a more
acidic pH which reverses this process and causes the cuticle layers
to return to their flat position, causing the hair to feel smooth.
The choice to seek out the safest product for your body comes
back to our initial exploration of physical sensitivity to organic
or nonorganic products and ingredients, immediate and acquired
allergies, and personal philosophy on participating in a strictly
organic lifestyle. Ultimately in this society we are all consumers,
and the market thrives on our attention. There is so much information available to you online at your fingertips. Do yourself a
favor and seek out products created with your fundamental health
in mind, and dare to explore all that is hidden underneath the
lipstick and rouge.

Attitudinal
healing
Part 2

Rev. Deb Phelps

Its not the situation thats causing your stress, its

your thoughts, and you can change that right here
and now. You can choose to be peaceful right here
and now. Peace is a choice, and it has nothing to do
with what other people do or think.
Dr. Jerry Jampolsky

ast month I began a two-part series on the concept of

attitudinal healing. This month I share with you the 12
principles that guide this universal method that has helped
countless individuals all over the world. These 12 principles work
together in creating an active acknowledgement of choice within
us and the ability to access the deep inner wisdom that lies within.
The 12 principles of attitudinal healing are:
1. THE ESSENCE OF OUR BEING IS LOVE

Love can only be experienced, as it is our energy force. It

remains constant and eternal. It is pure energy that flows
through us.
2. HEALTH IS INNER PEACE, HEALING IS
LETTING GO OF FEAR

In order for us to feel peace within, we first must make it our

single goal. We experience many emotions; however, we can use
our mind as a powerful tool to help to change our hurt feelings.
3. GIVING AND RECEIVING ARE THE SAME

The attitudinal healing definition of giving and receiving is:

there are no conditions, no expectations and no boundaries
put on the extension of sharing love with one another.
4. WE CAN LET GO OF THE PAST AND OF THE FUTURE

The past is there for our learning. Yet, the fact is that we are
in the present and we need to deal with what is going on in
the now. The future can seem scary and we can dwell on the
anxiety of the future, yet this will never bring us peace.
5. NOW IS THE ONLY TIME THERE IS AND EACH
INSTANT IS FOR GIVING
18

Natures Pathways | September 2014

www.naturespathways.com

This idea helps us to remain in the present moment. It is easy

to lapse into the past or become anxious about the future. We
cannot control the external world. We can learn to control
our thoughts so we remain at peace.
6. WE CAN LEARN TO LOVE OURSELVES AND OTHERS
BY FORGIVING RATHER THAN JUDGING

Whenever we make a judgment on another person, we make

a judgment on ourselves. Forgiveness, in the Attitudinal
Healing sense, does not mean condoning or agreeing with
anothers behavior or setting ourselves apart and choosing to
forgive someone because we feel they did something wrong.
It merely means that forgiveness is a vehicle to clarify our
misperceptions.

ESULTS
R
E
H
T
TWICE THE TIME
1/2

7. WE CAN BECOME LOVE FINDERS RATHER THAN

FAULT-FINDERS

It is easy to find fault with others. We may feel that if only

the other person would change, then we would be happier.
When we look at faults in others, it is a manifestation of our
own self-criticism. To practice attitudinal healing, we start to
forgive, stop judging and love ourselves and others.
8. WE CAN CHOOSE AND DIRECT OURSELVES TO
BE PEACEFUL INSIDE REGARDLESS OF WHAT IS
HAPPENING OUTSIDE

We come to realize that no one is really able to make us feel

happy, sad, lonely or angry.
9. WE ARE STUDENTS AND TEACHERS TO EACH OTHER

5617 Odana Rd., Madison

WWW.FITBODYMADISON.COM | f /MadisonFitnessBootCamp
608.616.5695 | info@fitbodymadison.com

When we see everyone as our teacher, we begin to look at life

in a new way.
10. WE CAN FOCUS ON THE WHOLE OF LIFE RATHER
THAN THE FRAGMENTS

In order to feel inner peace, we need to begin to focus on

oneness with ourselves and those around us.
11. SINCE LOVE IS ETERNAL, DEATH NEED NOT BE
VIEWED AS FEARFUL

Refer to principle No. 1; if we believe life is eternal, the fear of

death can be removed.
12. WE CAN ALWAYS PERCEIVE OTHERS AS EITHER
LOVING OR FEARFUL AND GIVING A CALL OF HELP
FOR LOVE

We are responsible for our own peace of mind and not that of
another person.
As A Course in Miracles says, Teach [and be] only love, for that
is what you are. When we are in alignment with our true nature,
our days will be filled with happiness and peace: all this by simply
having the willingness, awareness and openness to practice changing our mind, thus changing our attitude so we may be healed.

Effects of
birth
trauma

By Wade Anunson, DC

irth trauma is often the result of mainstream

medical interventions, either chemical or physical,
in the birth process to avoid high-risk exposure to
the mother or the newborn. Although this is a general description, it encompasses a vast array of insults influencing the health,
neuromuscular, digestive, behavioral and immunological systems
of the newborn. Theoretically, medical interventions are available
to save lives and reduce the risk of fatality in the birth process. I
must be clear that I am not here to condemn these interventions
that can certainly help protect the mother and baby from harm, or
the choices courageous women have made in their birth process.
Complications arise, and thankfully medical intervention has its
rightful place in those situations. My purpose, however, is to raise
awareness and offer perspective to the link between the routine
use of the top three interventions (induction with pitocin, epidurals and cesarean sections) and the neurological conditions that
arise in newborns that often follow and lead to chronic conditions.

Pitocin

According to studies published by the U.S. National Library of

Medicine of the National Institutes of Health and ChrisKresser.
com, side effects to the newborn from the oxytocin-augmenting
pitocin a drug used to induce labor include three times the
risk of asphyxia (insufficient oxygen), jaundice, encephalopathy
(brain condition), five times the risk of permanent central nervous
system or brain damage, bradycardia (low blood pressure), and fetal
death. A Nepal study cited that 30 percent of newborns with pitocin-related encephalopathy died. For the mother, natural levels of
oxytocin create harmonic pulsing uterine contractions. Synthetic
oxytocin creates longer, more forceful and tighter contractions, all
of which can create significantly more stress to the baby. Be aware
that abnormal fetal heart rate patterns and fetal distress can leave
very subtle effects that are often medically referred to as normal
variations from birth.

Epidurals

Besides being the most popular method of pain relief during

labor, intervening with epidural is not only blocking the sensory
nerve pathways that carry pain, hot, cold, touch and feel, but also
the motor nerves that control muscle function. While reducing
the pain sounds like a really, really good thing, its side effects have
a slippery slope with some very important organs like the uterus,
the heart, blood vessels and glands.
Epidurals increase the risk of forceps or vacuum distraction
methods by reducing the release of oxytocin essential for contractions, leading to weakened contractions and by increasing labor times
from 4.7 to 7.8 hours. It triples the risk of perineal tearing, triples the
20

Natures Pathways | September 2014

need for induction with pitocin, quadruples the chance for the baby
to present posterior and doubles the chance of cesarean birth.

Cesarean

Cesarean birth poses great risks to both the mother and the baby;
however, well remain focused on the baby in this article. Side
effects range from respiratory problems, low blood sugar and
poor tone, to immunosuppression, allergies, asthma and dysbiosis
(imbalance or lack of healthy gut flora).
The brilliance of the vaginal birth process carries a vital and
necessary component to the healthy development of the babys
brain and nervous system by stimulating the respiratory reflex,
which is instrumental in lung and cardiovascular health. The
passing of the newborn through the vaginal canal allows for the
natural infiltration of healthy bacteria via the infants oral and
nasal cavities and sets the stage for healthy gut flora. Bypassing
this natural process with cesarean has serious implications in the
development of the immune system and gastrointestinal function. Our gut flora comprises roughly 75 percent of our immune
system, and is necessary for fighting infection and assimilation of
nutrients from our food, or in this case breast milk. Dysbiosis has
been linked to autism, depression, irritable bowel syndrome, type
1 diabetes and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Dr. Wade Anunson

After one allergy season, with getting adjusted,

I didnt get sick! My daughters have not been
sick like theyre used to refreshing when I see
other kids getting sick around them. A.M.

Common signs of birth trauma

GERD, constipation, colic, periods of frequent spitting up, dystonia, problems latching, plagiocephaly, torticollis, frequent ear
infections/colds, neurobehavioral problems, slowed development
and failure to thrive can all be signs of traumatic birth syndrome.
For questions regarding safe and effective infant adjusting techniques, visit to www.activator.com.

Rebooting the nerve system

Traumatic birth syndrome results in abnormal stress to the

newborns nerve system which in turn affects the function and
development of every single cell, tissue and organ system in the
body. Whether it be from an extenuating labor, forceps/vacuum
extraction, or cesarean section, the stress to the baby is significant and may require adjusting into healthy alignment to restore
normal healthy function.
Dr. Wade Anunson is a 1994 graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. His holistic approach to patient care
stems from his own process of self-discovery through chronic respiratory problems as a child. Dr. Anunson gives a fresh perspective
to solving pain and dysfunction without drugs or surgery. He
currently directs a thriving practice in Madison called Anunson Chiropractic,

are going to fear or even hate you even though youve given

you cannot control the thoughts and actions of others.
The best any of us can hope to do is positively affect the opinions of others by our actions and reactions to them and to life,

The three
pillars
of reiki

By Kathy Milanowski

he three pillars of reiki are a great example of a ritual that

enhances the reiki session. It allows the practitioner to
connect with their higher self along with the reiki source.
This formula is broken up into three parts: gassho, reji-ho and
chiryo. Within these three pillars are their own individual attributes. When synchronized together, as with any ritual, we gain a
deeper connection to that intent.
Reiki is a Japanese healing technique based on the principle
that the practitioner channels energy into the patient by means of
touch to activate the natural healing processes of the patients body.
The word reiki is made up of two Japanese words: rei meaning
Gods wisdom or the higher power and ki which means life
force energy. Reiki restores physical and emotional well-being in
a manner that is relaxing and nonevasive to the client.
Gassho, the first pillar of reiki, has several parts: breath, centering, meditation and asking for the reiki energy to flow through
you. As you assume the gassho position, calmed and centered, you
apply the proper breathing techniques and set your intention to
prepare for the session.
Reji-ho, the second pillar, is where you ask for guidance. Reiji
means the indication of reiki power and ho means methods. In
essence, we are asking to switch on the energy. During this step of
asking for guidance, you also place your intentions for where the
reiki should be directed.
The following is an example of the second pillar from a time I
had given reiki to my cat Ester:
As I place my personality and ego aside, I allow the reiki source to
flow through me from the greatest source, for the highest good, with
the greatest intent, for Ester. May her paw heal quickly and recover
from any trauma she might have.
You then allow yourself to connect with yourself and your
guides. This can prove to be one of the most difficult steps for
most practitioners, as it requires trust in yourself and reiki.
However, if you ask to be open and connected, you will be open
and connected.
www.naturespathways.com

Lastly, the third pillar of reiki is chiryo, the treatment. This is

where you give the reiki to your client. There are uniform treatment points, and ones through experimentation and education
that you discover on your own. The session is usually very relaxing for the client, and both the practitioner and client can receive
guidance and healing from the treatment.
This is a very simple explanation of what each pillar entails in the
three pillars of reiki ritual. Ritual is what connects us together to
express our intentions. We are such miraculous energy sources. With
the right formula, a seed of intention along with affirmations and a
connection, your intention is created and your connection is deepened. With education, guidance and practice, these steps will aid you
in deepening your connection with yourself and the reiki source.

Facial rejuvenation
and reduction
of wrinkles with
facial
cupping

By Heidi Aschenbrenner, LMBT, CCT,
NCBTM, Member AOBTA

upping therapy is by far my favorite modality to work with

because it is so effective and has so many applications. If
you are already familiar with cupping therapy, it is important to note that the facial cupping techniques described here will
not leave discoloration on the face because of the techniques used
in this protocol. It should also be noted that facial cupping may
be done therapeutically for temporomandibular joint dysfunction
(TMJD), Bells palsy or other more significant restrictions in the
fascia of the face, and these therapeutic techniques might produce
the discoloration that many have experienced with cupping
therapy on other parts of the body. Our focus today is on facial
cupping for rejuvenation and reduction of wrinkles and puffiness
very much like getting a facial, but with cups instead!
Facial cupping uses negative pressure with small cups to eliminate the buildup of wastes and fluids in the face and neck. With
cups specifically designed for the face, the facial tissue experiences a vacuum and lifting effect, resulting in lymphatic drainage,
which reduces chronic puffiness to a great degree. Once one side
of the face is completed, there is a visible difference from just one
treatment. The completed side looks more lifted and has a healthy
glow. Its a wonderfully relaxing treatment that leaves you looking

well as absorption of any topical treatments such as essential oils. The
muscles of the face often have quite a bit of tension how many of
you have had TMJ pain or a popping jaw? Facial cupping reduces that
tension and tightness, softening those muscles and any scar tissue,
filling out lines and wrinkles. Facial cupping treatments are cumulative, especially when treatments are done once or twice per week,
which is recommended to achieve lasting visible results. Beyond the
health benefits, the treatment simply feels great, whether youve ever
had any noticeable tension in your facial muscles or not. Everybodys
skin needs a little rejuvenation from time to time. When was the last
time you treated your face to some TLC?
Another great result is the drainage of the sinuses during facial
cupping. Anyone who experiences any inflammation, infections
or other sinus congestion would benefit from facial cupping,
while simultaneously receiving the other aesthetic and health
benefits mentioned earlier. Combine that with some essential oils
for the sinuses at the end of the treatment, and your sinuses will
thank you! Once again, it will likely take a series of treatments to
see lasting results for sinus drainage, especially if the source of the
recurring sinus infections or congestion is not addressed.
Facial cupping requires specific training and should be performed
by a certified cupping therapist (CCT) who has been trained in this
protocol. There is an extensive network of nerves in the face, and
care must be taken when performing this service.
There are several therapists at Renu who are both trained and
certified to provide this service, and wed love to work with you
to achieve your facial rejuvenation! Heidi Aschenbrenner, LMBT,
CCT, NCBMT, and Member AOBTA, is the owner of Renu
Massage and Day Spa, specializing in Asian bodywork therapies and the Eastern healing arts. Heidi and her team of therapists all strive to
achieve balance in each session through the use of energy work incorporated into
their bodywork therapies and have all been trained in Eastern healing techniques
and cupping therapy. Renu offers an infrared sauna from Sunlighten Saunas for
deeper healing and detoxification after your session. For more information on

A tribute to
our
heroes

By Jennifer M. Warner, MSE, LPC
& Holistic Psychotherapist

A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger
than oneself. Joseph Campbell

fter pondering what to write about in my next article,

it was brought to my attention that my father had been
invited to attend the great Honor Flight to Washington,
D.C. in August. My father is a Vietnam veteran, and in accepting this honor, more integration of his experience would help
more healing take place. Therefore, this is a tribute to all who have
been affected by any war, either past or present. There have been
so many sacrifices made by our soldiers and their families. They
deserve the utmost respect and honor for serving our country. My
hope is to bring a greater awareness to all.
When most people think about the effects of war, they mention
post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Any trauma causes integrative fibers in the brain to stop functioning well, or causes them
to be destroyed. Trauma can be described as anything that overwhelms the system. Trauma changes the structure of the brain,
but through neuroplasticity, we can alter it too.
It is not easy to talk about the happenings of war. But it is an
important part for any healing to occur. However, we can begin
to heal the pain by transforming or changing the way we react
to it. If we continue to react to the pain/trauma in the same way
but expect to heal, we wont. We will be stuck in the pain, unable
to move past it and unable to heal it. Without the support and
encouragement to keep talking about our emotions and experiences, most of us just push them down and bury them beneath
layers, hoping that time alone will do the healing. Our emotions,
when left unattended, will continue to accumulate, grow and the
deeper buried emotions will remain.
As in some of our experiences, there is no way to completely
resolve a painful experience. We cannot change our past events
or our past experiences. However, we can begin to heal with the
pain by transforming or changing the way we react to it. Changing
the reaction doesnt mean we ignore or deny the painful event. It
means choosing to experience it differently.
www.naturespathways.com

The word heal is derived from the same root as the words for
whole, health and holy.
Healing does take place when we accept and integrate into our
consciousness the fragmented, separated and wounded parts of
ourselves that have become disowned, denied or unacknowledged. Accepting all of us makes us whole again. It is this wholeness that enables our authentic selves to be expressed.
So we can choose to look at fear as forgetting everything and
running or fear as an opportunity to face everything and rise. It
is ultimately our choice. The men and women who are accepting
of the invitation to the Honor Flight are a true representation of
rising.
Be gentle with yourself. Healing takes time. A time that is
uncertain, but with support and the encouragement to be open to
sharing all of our experiences, we can then integrate and accelerate healing.

Watered-down
fashion

By Lindsay Leno

he amount of water used to manufacture one garment can

be staggering: 1,800 gallons of water are used to make one
pair of jeans, according to a TreeHugger article. Thats the
equivalent of filling and emptying your bathtub 28 times, all for
one pair of jeans!
Even more daunting is trying to figure out a way to avoid this
necessary evil. Clothing is a basic human need, as is water. Unfortunately, with current fashion demands, clothing also depends on water
to create the final product. Its an overwhelming task to try to avoid
garments that depend upon water consumption or even to change
habits surrounding fashion that depends so heavily on water.
Garments require water in almost every step of manufacturing. One cotton T-shirt requires 400 gallons of water to grow the
cotton, dye the fabric, and rinse and treat the fabric (Merchant,
2009). Once the garment is created, it often is treated and washed
again to give it a specific feel or look. This doesnt begin to include
the additional washing that happens after it is taken home.
Luckily, small changes in shopping habits as well as personal
water consumption can make even a slight, but significant impact.

What you can do

Most women own anywhere between 8-11 pairs of jeans and

countless cotton tees or tanks, which can add up to thousands

of gallons of water to create the most basic wardrobe. To prevent

all this water consumption, a consumer can do several things to
make a smaller impact:
Research consciously made fabrics and garments.
Shop secondhand, versus brand new.
Make clothing by hand from natural or raw fabrics.
Commit to avoiding dry-clean-only garments.
Levis Strauss is aware of the water use related to the creation
of denim. They have taken steps to cut down on their water
consumption and to even go so far as recycling water to create
some of their most popular styles. Other companies have taken
steps to cut down on water consumption and by doing a quick
internet search, its easy to access reputable companies that take
this issue seriously.
Instead of buying a brand new garment, secondhand is a solution that saves thousands of gallons that wouldve been used for
a new garment. In addition, making clothing from scratch saves
gallons that would be used for the processing of the garment.
You may think youre saving water by purchasing dry-clean
garments; however, gallons were already used to create the
garment and the toxins used to launder with a dry procedure put
a strain on the environment.
www.naturespathways.com

Saving at home

Cutting down on water consumption at home is a way to counterbalance the amount used in the fashion industry. Save on water by
making a few changes with your laundry process:
Hang garments after wearing and air them out, versus
washing them.
Purchase clothing that will sustain multiple wears between
washing, such as synthetics.
Remember: Jeans fit better when unwashed and are meant to
be washed minimally.
Do laundry less frequently and with larger loads.

Staggering statistics can be alarming when it comes to the water footprint created for fashion items purchased on a daily basis. Being a
conscious consumer paired with making a few lifestyle adjustments
will make an impact and go a long way when habitually practiced.

Your angel is
beside
you

By Varinia del Moral

rchangel Michaels message, channeled by Varinia: We

(angels) are called to serve humanity, to support your
personal growth. Call on us, welcome us, we are right there.
Have you ever encountered your angel? Do you think you may
have, but doubted or minimized what happened? Its clich, but
true: miracles are happening all around us, and our angels are
there to support us.
In August of 2011, I had been training for nearly 15 months
to work with the angelic realm. I had learned to tune into them,
communicate with them, and had experienced miracles daily
along the way. And I was about to be given a choice in my life.
I had started horseback riding lessons when, only a few lessons
in, we learned how to trot; however, my horse decided to charge
the mare in front of us instead. Have you ever seen the character
Woody from the movie Toy Story? His doll legs flail as he rides
the toy horse yes, thats how I looked! As I flew off my horse,
6 feet in the air, I heard a guiding voice instruct me on how to
release my trapped foot from the stirrup and align my body so that
I would land safely. It was a slow motion, peaceful fall even when
I landed hard on my side. My mind panicked as the pain went
through my body. I was immobilized. Then, I reminded myself
I had been training with my angels, which calmed my mind. I
began taking deep breaths that reduced my anxiety, and began a
conversation with the guiding voices, Archangel Michael and the
Virgin Mary, who assured me it was muscular damage and theyd
stay with me through the ordeal. Some may experience this type
of conversation in deep prayer or a meditative state.
Two people were with me when I had the accident, my close
friend and my angelic teacher. When I reached the hospital, my
close friend approached me and said, Dont worry, our teacher
says that Archangel Michael and the Virgin Mary have been with
28

Natures Pathways | September 2014

you the entire time. I sighed with relief; I had needed that thirdparty confirmation that I was in fact communicating with higher
spiritual beings. Despite initial indication of a broken clavicle,
hip and ankle, I left the hospital that evening without any broken
bones. It was muscular.
I was given a choice that day on how to proceed with my life. I
could minimize the incident and doubt that any of the communication was real, or I could accept the possibility of it being real and
a part of my life. In my case, accepting it as reality helped me heal
over the next year by providing me with peace and reduced anxiety.
Since then, Ive been called to support others in communicating and experiencing their own angels. Angels are nondenominational, which is why we find them represented in so many religions. You do not have to adhere to a specific faith to communicate with them. The angels speak with humanity in many different
ways, often by signs such as numbers or symbols. Start tuning in
to things that repeat. Its their way of getting your attention.
Have you ever woken up to a familiar voice calling your name?
Do not doubt yourself. Divine intervention, guidance and support
feels safe and peaceful, even if we feel startled. Encountering our
angels can be startling, but doesnt have to be. Listening to the
messages from our angels, and most importantly inviting them
to assist us, reduces our stress, which can improve our health as
a part of the body-mind-spirit connection. Maximize the benefits
of your meditation and zen space by including your angels.
Varinia del Moral is a trained bilingual angelic communicator. In her angelic readings, as a clairvoyant, she works closely
with Archangel Michael to create a space for clients where they
can communicate with their angels, experience their presence
and receive guidance. Varinia offers personal angelic readings at

From harvest
to table to
compost
bin

By Jill Carlson

he seeds which were sown in the spring brought forth the

summer harvest, which can now be enjoyed in many delicious ways at the dinner table.
From asparagus to zucchini, this year was a great year for fresh
produce. Because many people are moving toward the fresh food
movement by planting their own gardens, shopping at farmers
markets or supporting community supported agriculture farms
known as CSAs, the local economy is becoming stronger.
I hopped on the grow-your-own food tractor this spring when I
bought a 4-foot-by-4-foot raised bed. I dont exactly need a tractor
to tend my garden, because its really easy to keep the weeds at bay
by pulling them as they emerge from the soil.
Walking out to the garden in the evening after work to bring
in fresh lettuce, a tomato, basil, some beans and radishes, parsley,
cilantro, Brussels sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower to make a salad
feels so rewarding. I know where my food came from. I dont have
to worry that it might be contaminated, or that it sat at the grocery
store for several days. My salad tastes fresh and crispy. The lettuce
doesnt taste like it came out of a plastic bag. And I feel so happy
that I grew the ingredients with tender loving care. The carbon
footprint to get it to my table was zero.
By growing your own food or buying it at a farmers market, you
can freeze, pickle or can some to use during the winter. When the
cold winds of winter are howling, the tomato sauce made from
tomatoes grown in your garden will be like a ray of sunshine on
your pasta.
Once the food prep is done, next comes the ultimate form of
recycling composting. The peels, stems, ends and anything
else nonedible can be composted by working these parts into
the garden soil to help nourish the vegetables that are still in the
garden, and to amend the soil for the next growing season.
www.naturespathways.com

Even those who dont have a garden can compost, and save
egg shells and other vegetable and fruit peels in a bin under the
kitchen sink for those who do have a garden. It is a great way to
keep recycling. What starts with a seed nourishes our soul and
soil, and the circle of life continues.

Sungold Tomato Sauce

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 quart tomatoes, cut in chunks, stems removed
A large garlic clove, minced
teaspoon sugar
Salt and pepper to taste
Handful of fresh basil leaves

Heat olive oil until hot, but not smoking. Add tomatoes,
garlic and salt. Shake the pan as they sizzle. Flatten tomatoes
with a spoon to release their juices as they cook. Reduce heat
to medium and continue to cook, shaking pan as needed.
Reduce sauce by half, about 15 minutes. Taste, add sugar and
additional salt if needed. Use to top pasta, spaghetti squash
or vegetables. Top with fresh chopped basil before serving.
Can be frozen in quart-size or larger containers.

The amazing
power of
pineapples

By Debbie Armstrong

ach year in February as I vacation

in Jamaica, I look forward to the
amazing fresh-squeezed orange
juice and the succulent, sweet, juicy fruits.
Of all these wonderful tropical fruits, one
is truly amazing.
With spiky, dusty green leaves and a
golden crosshatched skin, the pineapple has
a look like no other. This exotic, delicious
tropical fruit is more than just that. It is a
great source of vitamins and minerals, and
has many health benefits. This tasty fruit is
low in saturated fat, sodium and cholesterol.
The good news is you dont have to
travel to the Caribbean islands, Hawaii or
another tropical destination to enjoy the
effervescent tropical flavor that balances
the tastes of sweet and sour. In fact, pineapples can be found in any grocery store
year round.
Pineapples are loaded with vitamins A,
B-6 and C; fiber; potassium; phosphorous;
calcium; manganese; and bromelain. Some
of the vast arrays of health benefits of pineapples are listed below.

Bromelain

Bromelain is a protein-digesting enzyme

found in high concentrations in the stem
and fruit of the pineapple. Bromelain was
first discovered in the 1800s to aid in the
prevention of illness and inflammation. It

has also recently been linked to improved
breathing conditions, better circulatory
and heart health, asthma recovery, and
enhanced immunity. Bromelain has also
been recognized for its ability to decrease
bruising by breaking down the proteins that
prevent blood from leaving injured tissues.

Cancer-fighting properties

The strong antioxidant, vitamin C, found

in pineapples can help reduce the formation of free radicals, which are known to
cause cancer.
It is also suspected that the bromelain enzyme helps to restore balance to
the immune system and increase the

absorption of vital chemotherapy drugs.

Many recent studies have indicated that
bromelain has the ability to activate immunity-enhancing receptors in the body,
which helps to kill cancer cells without
harming the patient or requiring more
aggressive interventions.

Fertility

Diets rich in antioxidants have been shown

to improve fertility. Free radicals can
damage the reproductive system, so foods
rich with antioxidants help to battle free
radicals and are recommended for those
trying to conceive.
The antioxidants found in pineapples
have properties that affect fertility in both
males and females.

Reduced risk of macular

Macular degeneration is a condition where

adults lose vision, making it difficult to

read and recognize things accurately.

Beta-carotene found in pineapples enables
vision and should be consumed regularly
for good eye health. Three or more servings per day of beta-carotene has also been
shown to decrease risk of and progression
of macular degeneration.

Improved digestion

The abundance of bromelain, vitamin C

and fiber in pineapples promotes good
digestion. Bromelain digestive enzymes
also help to clear intestinal parasites, such
as tapeworms.
One of the key benefits of pineapple juice
is that it forestalls nausea or morning sickness. It can also be helpful for people who
get motion sickness on planes or in cars.

Skin care

Do you want to look younger naturally?

Pineapples give the collagen synthesis in
your body a boost. Studies show that the
higher the collagen synthesis is, the firmer
and more flexible your skin will be. The
presence of amino acids and vitamin C
ensures that damaged cells and tissues are
repaired rapidly.
To exfoliate the skin and eliminate the
dead skin cells, use crushed pineapple
wedges. Exfoliating also accentuates blood
flow and keeps your skin looking vibrant
and healthy.
The pineapple is one of natures most
powerful and best-kept health secrets.
Whether you suffer from minor inflammation or major immune-compromising
disorders such as cancer, this vitamin- and
mineral-rich exotic fruit has the potential
to change your health.

5 steps to
double your
energy
naturally

By Sonya Sullins, MBA, CHRP

egardless of where you work or what you do, chances are

you are or have felt chronically tired.
The demands of keeping up with jam-packed schedules
filled with family, work and personal obligations create an endless
cycle of exhaustion and fatigue.
The result: You reach for quick energy fixes that are unhealthy
and depleting.
Below are five quick, easy and powerful techniques to double
your energy and productivity naturally and sustainably.
1. EAT A PROTEIN-RICH BREAKFAST: Our bodies need
nourishment in the morning to break the fast from a long
nights sleep and protein is ideal. It gives you sustained
energy, and keeps you from having a gigantic lunch and then
crashing in the afternoon and reaching for caffeinated drinks
and sugary snacks from the vending machine.
Some easy, protein-rich breakfast ideas include: a protein
shake, an omelet with vegetables (skip the cheese!) and Greek
yogurt with walnuts. When possible, eat breakfast within 60
minutes of waking up.
Eating a power breakfast is the No. 1 technique to instantly
double your energy and boost your metabolism every day.
2. GET PLENTY OF SLEEP: Sleep not only gives you laser
sharp focus and energy, but it also is a major component to
healthy weight loss and management.
Sleep controls the appetite-stimulating hormone ghrelin.
When you dont get enough sleep, ghrelin is more prevalent,
making you crave all the wrong foods, all day long. Plus,
your focus and mood suffer as you crave all the junk food in
sight. When you get enough rest, your body has more of the
hormone leptin, which helps to suppress your appetite.
The time you fall asleep is just as important as the amount
of hours you sleep. Aim for seven to nine hours of uninterrupted sleep per night.
If youre thinking that you dont have enough time to sleep,
here are seven tips to support you in getting the shut-eye you
32

Natures Pathways | September 2014

really need. Sleep is a must-have to keep you successful for

the long-term.

Tips for adding more sleep to your busy day

Schedule a bedtime thats realistic and stick to it. You can start

by deciding to be in bed 30 minutes before you usually do.

Make bedtime a ritual. Turn off or even remove TVs from

your bedroom, and read a book (or snuggle!) instead.

Listen to soothing music, light a candle, use aromatherapy

oils or have some lavender sachets for stress reduction.

When youre in your bed, you shouldnt be playing with gadgets

as theyll keep you wired and engaged. Disconnect and rest.

Avoid caffeine and too much sugar after lunchtime and avoid

very late exercise in the evening.

Take a 10- to 15-minute nap during the day. Itll give your

eyes some rest and help you reconnect with your body.

Lie upon your BioMat! Use one of the three lowest settings

and reduce your stress hormones by 78 percent while balancing not only your body temperature but your hormones, too!
3. EXERCISE: Play it up! Exercise is a game changer when it
comes to living a healthy lifestyle since it benefits our minds,
bodies and spirits.
If exercise doesnt fit into your current schedule, remember
its amazing benefits; exercise builds self-confidence, is a great
stress reliever, elevates our mood, strengthens the immune
system and helps prevent chronic conditions such as type 2
diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
Stay creative. If the gym doesnt excite you, consider yoga,
kettlebells, pilates, Zumba, ballroom dancing, hiking, swimming or power walking outdoors. Do what you love and youll
do it often. The goal is to move consistently.
4. GET REAL WITH YOUR FOOD: To keep your energy high
throughout your day, eat whole foods that are plant-based
or minimally processed. Eat GMO-free food! The more you
eat foods from nature, the more energized youll feel. These
www.naturespathways.com

include dark leafy greens, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts,

seeds, whole grains and lean protein. Find a ratio of healthy
to fun (less healthy) foods that works for you. For example,
80 percent healthy and 20 percent fun foods is a good goal.
5. CREATE A POWER SCHEDULE: Add healthy activities.
Your calendar truthfully reflects your priorities and values.
If health is a priority in your life, then it needs its own spot on
your calendar. Exercise, time for self-care, meal planning and
the quality of your sleep are all really key! If its not on your
calendar, it becomes a should and may not get done. If you
schedule it in, then its much more likely to happen.
Consider adding time on your calendar for yourself as a
business appointment because it is. You are investing in
your well-being so you can function optimally. Make optimal
health your No. 1 personal and professional success tool. You
are worth it!

Virgo
Perfect
Imperfection
Dates: Aug. 22Sept. 21
Ruled by: Mercury
Element: Earth

By Barry Kerr

Though true for everyone, the following

information will feel more relevant to you
if your sun, North Node, Chiron and/or a
group of other planets are in Virgo on your
birth chart.

What is Virgos intention?

In the grand scheme of things, what we

are doing here, as spirits in human form, is
learning how to be conscious co-creators
in this time/space
dimension we call the
physical world. This
requires that we pay
attention to how this
world works, practically, on every level.
Hello, Virgo!
It is the Virgo in us
all that focuses attention on the details in
our experience. Virgos spiritual intention
is to get it right, to create life to the highest
order of potential. Thus, when we are in
our Virgo self, we might be fussy, particular and critical, as we are sensitive to everything that falls short of wholeness and
perfection. The world is giving us feedback
so we can improve our selves, our lives and
serve others by improving theirs.
In this process, our Mercury minds take

in and analyze a cascade

of information about how
everything around us and inside
of us works or doesnt work. In affect,
Virgo is our inner scientist, applying logic
and coolheaded reasoning to our experiences and our relationships. When we do
this well, we arrange our daily habits and
lifestyles in earthy ways that maintain our
health and wholeness, that ground us to

disconnected and/or impure. Something

is wrong physically, emotionally, mentally
or spiritually and we need to fix or get
rid of it. This can be experienced as physical illness, hyper-anxiety, over-analysis,
obsessive worry, obsession with details,
faultfinding, perfectionism,
being
right and inflexibility. There is a nagging
sense of dissatisfaction that longs for
wholeness and order.
To heal our Virgo
selves, we need to
learn to appreciate that though this
world appears to our logical minds to be
chaotic, fragmented and disconnected
from order and spirit, it is actually always
in perfect spiritual balance and harmony;
and so are we. With this polar perspective (Pisces/Neptune), we can accept, love
and serve ourselves, others, and the world
as they are, appreciating that we are each
on a unique journey back to conscious
wholeness as co-creators. Our job is to pay

highest order of potential.

the practical boundaries of life, and find

useful service. When we do this poorly, we
cut off feelings, suffer illnesses, create work
and relationship problems, and/or lose
spiritual perspective and connection.

attention and learn to co-create with more

wisdom, faith, mastery and love.

What can I do this month?

To heal and evolve your Virgo self, pay

attention to how you participate with
others. Do you act on your feelings of
compassion? Serve others effectively?
Or just judge and criticize? How much
does your mind analyze and categorize,
and notice details, trying to make order
out of disorder? This is what our mind is
designed to do, but it needs balance with
our heart and intuition.
Is your mind helping you create healthy
routines, or causing obsessive and harmful
habits? Or do you rebel against routines
and order because you are disappointed
with the world? Are you living primarily
in your head, a mental cloud of disconnect
from feelings, or are you grounding into
your body and to the earth, feeling your
feelings, and taking care of yourself?

Additional support (current

planetary transits)

During September 2014, Venus is also in

Virgo while Mercury is in Libra. Venus,
planet of relationships, and Libra, sign of
relationships, are inviting and supporting
you to apply your super observant Virgo/
Mercury mind toward how you create and
experience your primary relationships. What
do you notice? How do you give and receive
feedback from the people in your life?
On Sept. 8, the Pisces full Moon (opposite Virgo) merges with Chiron, planet
of healing. Grab a partner and give your
busy Virgo minds a meditative rest by
listening to inspiring music and breathing
in the divine, unconditional love available
through your oceanic hearts, invoking
compassion and gratitude for the perfect
imperfection of being human.

Know
the
enemy

By Donna Sereda

f youre an older reader, you may

remember the Pogo cartoon, in which
Pogo declares, We have met the
enemy and he is us. He was very close to
being right. If you were to ask the question, Where is your enemy?, most people
would probably point to another person,
but according to Dharma (the teachings of
Buddha Shakyamuni), that is completely
erroneous. Buddha believed that the only
enemies any of us have are our own inner
enemies: the delusions.

If we think deeply about our own

experience, we will come to understand that
desirous attachment is indeed a delusion,
one of many that disturb our mind and
lead us to actions with negative results.
In the book, How to Solve Our Human
Problems, Geshe Kelsang Gyatso defines
delusion as a mental factor that arises

from inappropriate attention and functions to make the mind unpeaceful and
uncontrolled. He goes on to say that there
are three main delusions: ignorance, desirous attachment, and anger, and that all
other delusions (such as jealousy, miserliness, laziness, inconsideration and so
forth) arise from these three. These delusions are the source of all of our problems
and suffering. When delusions are not
functioning strongly, our mind is relatively tranquil. But when a delusion such
as anger arises, it is much like a sudden
storm destroying the tranquility of the
ocean, an analogy from Geshe Kelsangs
book Understanding the Mind. When
our mind is disturbed in this way, we dont
think clearly and usually act in a way that
creates further problems.
For example, a teacher recently began a
Dharma class by asking if anyone had an
itchy mind. She was talking about the
delusion known as desirous attachment.
We want something because we believe
that having possession of the thing is the
key to our happiness. We become aware
www.naturespathways.com

of an object, dwell on its perceived good

qualities, and convince our self that we
would be a much happier person if only we
had this thing. Our mind is so itchy. The
object is all we can think and talk about.
Our friends grow weary of our obsession.
Finally, we scratch the itch and acquire the
thing, but are we really any happier?
We may feel happier at first, but the happy
feeling certainly is not permanent. Suppose
the object is a smartphone. We forget to add
minutes or accidentally drop it in the sink,
and suddenly, we are not so happy! But the
next model comes out and the cycle begins
again. The new model is faster and smarter!
There are more apps available! Surely the
new one will make us happy.
Can such an itch ever be scratched? We
all do this. Sometimes its material things,
sometimes food, and sometimes it is
another person who becomes the object of
our desire and attachment. Again and again
we make the mistake of thinking that something external to ourselves is the source of
happiness, that something out there will
make us feel content. If we think deeply
about our own experience, we will come
to understand that desirous attachment is
indeed a delusion, one of many that disturb
our mind and lead us to actions with negative results. Delusions are like enemies that
surround us, defeating us again and again.
Buddhas teachings make it possible to
learn to control and overcome our delusions. First we need to clearly identify the
delusions and to understand their nature,
that is, how they function to make us miserable. We can accomplish this through studying Dharma. Then we must develop awareness and mindfulness so that we recognize
delusions as they arise in our mind. We also
need to know the antidotes to delusions and
how to apply them. The practice of Dharma
applying Buddhas teachings to our
everyday life is the supreme method for
solving all of our problems. Our real enemy
can be defeated!

Flourish in the natural, pure approach

to transforming your beauty at

Divine Body & Styles

Organic Salon & Spa
By Grace Olson
It is often said that beauty is in the eye of the
beholder. But the allure of altering your look and
indulging in a makeover, drastic or not, holds a
few universal qualities: transformation, invigoration and confidence. What it should not include
is feeling exposed to harm.
Thats why Angela Kowieski, owner of Divine Body
& Styles Organic Salon & Spa (DBS), has created a
space where salon treatments are just as beautiful for your health as they are in their picturesque
results. And if anything, the outcome is even more
vibrant than when using the dangerous alternatives.
We are pretty specific in the products we use,
and some people are scared to use them thinking they dont work without
all the chemicals, Kowieski says. If anything,
organic does a better
job. Like with food,
an organic apple
will
always
taste better!
In the evergrowing world
of
organic
and
natural

products, it can be hard to

weed out the pure goods
that help give the thriving
industry its good name. DBS
caters to people of all backgrounds, offering products that fit
every persons lifestyle. But one thing
is missing: the guessing game.
There are a lot of products out there that say
they are organic but still have ammonia or something else in them, Kowieski explains. Theyre
still not good for you... We research everything and
were able to find the best products out there.
Two of the bigger lines DBS uses are renowned
Organic Color Systems, an eco-friendly line known
for using ammonia-free, certified organic ingredients, and 100% Pure, skin care and fruit-pigmented
products. Both bring with them the peace of mind
that goes along with using natural and pure components to bring vibrancy and transform your hair.
Angela also created her own line, Divinity Organics, when she developed sensitivity to fragrance
during pregnancy. The lotions and soaps often
contain rose quartz for its ability to clear skin, and
aloe is used instead of water, helping to balance
the skins pH so it can absorb all of the healthy

properties within the natural components.

I use a lot of essential oils, and I combine them
with different crystals or gems for their energy
and healing properties, Kowieski says.
It can sometimes sound more like chemistry (sans
the chemicals!) than cosmetology, but the results
are worth it. DBS also offers spa features in its
massage and energy work. Deep tissue, aromatherapy and prenatal massages are all available,
along with essential oil therapy and reiki sessions.
It all comes together in a great way. A lot of
work and research has gone into making DBS
a successful organic salon and spa, and Angela
wouldnt have it any other way.
I love what I do, Kowieski says. I cant imagine
not doing it!

They love what they do too! Get to know the rest of the

Autumn Burns

Hairstylist, Certified Organic

Colorist, Salon Manager
After inevitably styling all of her roommates hair
before events in college, Autumn changed her
course by beginning cosmetology school and
learning from some of the greatest hairstylists in
the business.
Why DBS? I had been looking to use only highperforming organic products and color for a long
time, and I finally found it last year along with a
great team to work with.

A feel-good moment: One of my favorite moments

was recently when I traveled to Chicago and was
able to meet other like-minded hairstylists. It was
one of the most rewarding moments in my career
to see stylists that have converted to Organic Color
Systems that were cancer survivors and wanting to
make a healthier change in their salons habits.
Favorite aspect of the job: My favorite services
are creating natural color, giving a great haircut,
an amazing blowout, and then being able to
style their hair for their wedding or for a photo
shoot. I love this because I get to create from
beginning to end what the client wants.

Miriam Tsukanova
Aesthetician, Energy
Therapist and Herbalist

Believing that true beauty begins on the inside is

one of the main reasons Miriam loves her job in
the health and beauty industry.
Why DBS? We are always providing consultations for clients about their skin heath and tips on
how to maintain beauty regimens without having
to sacrifice their health.
A feel-good moment: My favorite moment is
after a consultation or treatment when my client
hugs me, smiles so beautifully, and tells me that it
was so enjoyable. This is a rewarding feeling and
I cherish every time this happens.
Favorite aspect of the job: Every service I
provide is very special for me because I know
that for that amount of time, my client trusts
me. Sometime its impossible to say no to daily
routines and to find time, but I always strongly
encourage them to try, because you cant be
helpful, healthy and happy for somebody if you
dont do it for yourself.

Varinia del Moral

Angelic Communicator
and Mehndi Artist

Varinia was guided to attend meditation classes,

expanding on her gift of being able to communicate with angels as a young child. She now feels it
is an honor to share her gift with others.
Why DBS? I chose the salon because of its focus
on caring for the whole self and its accessibility to
undeserved communities (in particular those with
chemical sensitivities, ethnic hair and language

barriers). Essentially, the values of the salon are in

line with my own.
A feel-good moment: My clients angel made it
very clear that the client was having ongoing lower
quadrant abdominal pain the client confirmed
that it was true, but that she kept ignoring it. Her
angel became adamant that it needed medical
attention and should not be ignored any longer.
Reluctantly, the client did have it checked, and
her uterus had to be removed.
Favorite aspect of the job: My favorite service is
providing angelic readings because of the positive
shift it has in peoples lives. In the moment, it may
not seem clear to them exactly whats happening,
but afterward, things fall into place.

Kathy Vellon

Cosmetology Assistant
and Makeup Artist
Kathy simply loves helping people feel and
look great in such a pure environment and
she does!
Why DBS? I believe in the DBS philosophy of
providing healthier salon treatments and products that are organic. This ensures that providers
and clients are in a healthy environment free from
toxic chemicals that can harm us.
A feel-good moment: Watching a client who
was battling cancer receive the optimal care she
deserved. She came in feeling down about her
thinning hair; Angela provided a great color and
cut, and used a product that helped cover the
thinning spots. When I saw her leave, she looked
so uplifted with hope in her eyes that it almost
made me cry.

Favorite aspect of the job: I love doing marketing for the salon at expos and other community
events. One of my favorite events is our yearly
Pedis for a Cure fundraiser it is one of the best
ways to give back to our community, and I have
the pleasure to be a part of it. (For more information about DBS events, see the highlighted section
at the botttom of this page.)

Irene Sanchez

Cosmetology Assistant
and Receptionist
Irene started at DBS while she was a student, and
realized through shadowing such forward-thinking philosophies and stylists, it is exactly where
she belongs.
Why DBS? I am proud that I will start my career
off on the right path and that I can limit my exposure to unhealthy products that are traditionally
used in most salons.
A feel-good moment: One of my favorite
moments with my friends at DBS is when I graduated from high school and all of the ladies came
to show me support.
Favorite aspect of the job: I love to observe and
assist with the Keratin Fusion hair extensions. I get
to see the client transform into a totally different
style and see how happy they are afterward.

Lasers: Can they

melt
fat?

By Angela Rahm and Dee Dee Delkamp

aser technologies have been around

in regard to fat loss since the 1960s.
There are many systems that use
LED lights, far infrared and direct skin
lasers for fat loss.
How do you know what will work? In
some aspects, all will work to some degree;
although none will work if you choose a
lifestyle that neglects basic nutrition, exercise and mindfulness. Even traditional
liposuction will not last forever if you
choose a poor diet and little exercise.
www.peacefulheart.net

Its crystal clear

What are your fat loss needs?

Do you have more than 20 pounds to lose?

Dont jump to laser or LED forms of fat
loss. First, get your diet and stress under
control. Meditate, start a workout routine
that fits your schedule and lifestyle, begin
an enzyme therapy protocol (to nourish
the body on a cellular level) and make
necessary changes to your diet. After two
weeks of pre-prep, adding in laser treatments will offer you greater success!
Do you do everything right? You eat

right and you exercise regularly, but still

have an isolated bubble belly, thighs that
rub together or a back fat roll that wont go
away? You should go for it. U.S. Food and

systems such as the i-Lipo system are
approved for fat reduction and offer immediate results with no downtime and no pain.

technologies. It can be effective for fat loss,
but note that it is light, not laser, and the
effectiveness will take longer.
i-Lipo from Chromogenex is FDA
approved and meets the required 29.5 megawatt of laser energy to create the reaction in
the cells you need for fat loss. There is no
magic solution but there is technology that
does work, especially when combined with a
healthy lifestyle. To some, it can be a miracle.

True fat loss

Diet and exercise are the most important

components of fat loss. When in need of more
support, turn to laser technology like the
i-Lipo. Do your due diligence and research.
These technologies are not the same and do
not offer the same level of results.
One common element to laser, LED and
IR fat loss technologies is that the lymphatic

Far infrared saunas are an excellent way

to detoxify the body and help with weight
loss, among many other benefits.
This type of sauna uses far infrared rays,
a gentle, very beneficial and healing part
of the suns rays. It induces sweating at a
much more comfortable temperature of
40 to 50 degrees Celsius (104122 degrees
Fahrenheit) than conventional saunas.
Cellulite becomes water soluble at 43
degrees Celsius (109 degrees Fahrenheit).
Cellulite, which is made up of fat, water
and waste material, then melts and can be
sweated out of the body. While separating
our toxins from our fat cells and stimulating our lymphatic system, we make it much
easier for our lymph fluid to move and for
our bodies to sweat out our waste materials
as well. An extra benefit of all of this is it
then boosts our immune systems.

Eating for your

blood
type

By Jamie Weber, MS, RDN, CD, CLC

hat is eating for your blood type all about? Why do some
people do well on particular diets, while others do not?
Is it true that one mans food is another mans poison?
Dr. James DAdamo, a second-generation naturopathic physician, continued with some investigative work that his father
started regarding diets and blood types. He noticed some patients
thrived on a vegetarian, low-fat diet, while others did not. Some
even had their symptoms worsen. DAdamos father tracked his
patients blood types and their response to certain diets. Over
time, he noticed a pattern transpire. In the early 1980s, DAdamo
began research to find objective data that would coincide with his
fathers subjective observations and discovered there were some
associations with blood type and disease.
The naturopath believed that our blood is the genetic blueprint
for how we are supposed to eat. He eventually isolated proteins
from a variety of foods and one-by-one, while looking under a
microscope, combined the proteins with each blood type (O, A,
B, AB). It was discovered that a chemical reaction occurs between
our blood and the foods we eat. Certain blood types would coagulate when mixed with the specific isolated proteins. Agglutination
occurs in an attempt to reject the food from the body. A similar
reaction occurs when a person receives the wrong blood type. For
example, if a person is O+, they would not be able to receive A
blood. It would start to coagulate, and would be harmful to the
person with type O blood. It is thought that if you eat the best diet
for your blood type, it will decrease your risk for certain diseases
and will help you lose and maintain a healthy weight.

The four blood types in a nutshell

Type O: Tend to do better with organic and free-range meats,

and more of a paleo diet. Dont do well with dairy products and
grains, especially wheat. Leading factor for weight gain is gluten,
beans and legumes.
Type A: Thrive on a vegetarian-based diet. Due to having a
lower amount of stomach acid, meat isnt tolerated well. Meat may
42

Natures Pathways | September 2014

slow metabolism, making it difficult to lose weight. Dairy foods

are also poorly digested.
Type B: May do better with a balanced diet consisting of a
variety of foods. Similar to Type Os, its best to avoid gluten, especially wheat and corn. Type Bs tend to do better with dairy than
the other blood types.
Type AB: This is the rarest blood type and also the most
complex. Type ABs have the same aversions as both Type A and
Type B blood types. This can be a challenge.

Take home message

Listen to your body. We all have some foods that may either
agree or disagree with our systems. A good way to figure out
food sensitivities is to do an elimination diet for 14 days. Only
eat whole foods (fruits, veggies, meats, eggs, nuts, gluten free
grains, etc.). Processed and packaged foods, dairy and gluten
should be avoided. After 14 days, slowly add in foods one by one
introducing a new food every four days. It may take four days
for a sensitivity to reveal itself. Some common symptoms people
experience are: headaches, heartburn, bloating, gas, constipation/diarrhea, sore joints, fatigue and mental fog. If you notice
one or more symptoms, it may be best to abstain, or at least limit,
consumption of these foods. Keeping a food journal and following DAdamos book, Eat Right for Your Type, may be helpful
during this process.
Jamie Weber, Holistic Nutritionist, MS, RDN, CD, CLC, owner of
clean, LLC, received her bachelors degree in community medical
dietetics from Viterbo University in 2002. She received her masters
degree in professional development from Winona State University
in 2014. Since graduating, she has worked in a variety of settings.
Some of her work experiences include weight loss, blood sugar management,
gastrointestinal issues, elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels, food allergies/
sensitivities and prenatal nutrition. In 2005, she completed the certified lactation
counselor training and provides breastfeeding education and support. Check out

Self-parenting
Part 2

By Deb Freeman

ast month when I wrote about self-parenting, I mentioned

that it is like building a house. Self-parenting is taking the
hand of your inner child, and helping your inner child feel
safe, sane and secure in this world. You do this by starting with
four corners, or posts, of the house.
When you can give and receive unconditional love and acceptance, emotional intimacy, maturely protect your boundaries and
self-nurture yourself, then you have the four corners in place for
your structural home. Coaching can help you to put these corners
firmly in place. As you start self-parenting, you are going to start to
build the floors and walls of your home. You do this by learning to
validate your feelings, learning to keep yourself sane, safe and secure
in the world, and finding your adult powers. Learn how to protect
yourself, give yourself permission to live your life as you choose and
practice that which will help you to become a self-parented adult.
Laying the four posts and building the floors and walls sounds like
a lot of work, doesnt it? But you are building a strong foundation, not
the straw house that can be blown down by the big bad wolf. Once
you build your foundation and learn to keep reinforcing it, you have
that foundation for the rest of your life on this earth plane.
When I started to build my foundation, one of the corners or
boundaries, was unknown to me. I knew what a boundary was, but
I had no idea whatsoever how to protect my boundaries. What is a
boundary? Look at the skin covering your body. This skin protects
you, and if it gets cut, ripped or abused in some way, your body
is threatened. This skin is the boundary of your body, protecting
you. Other boundaries are unseen but are there to protect you. You
set your boundaries to protect yourself and to give yourself integrity. Look at your life and examine what is working and what is not
working. The parts that are working most likely have boundaries
set in place. And the parts of your life that are not working need a
closer look so boundaries can be set to make improvements. There
are boundaries in your marriage, work, friendships, etc.
I learned that there are different kinds of boundaries. I read a book
called Where to Draw the Line by Anne Katherine, M.A., who also
www.naturespathways.com

authored a book called Boundaries. If you, like I, wish to take a step

toward protecting your boundaries, this would be a great read. Some
of the boundaries discussed are time, communication, anger, friendship, intimacy, sexual, parent, spiritual, gender and divorce. When
you are made aware of these boundaries, you then have the power
to set your own boundaries within them, and learn how to not cross
them to walk the road to your own self-mastery as you continue to
build your home and self-parent yourself.
Reading the above book has given me insight about the boundaries I was learning when I was receiving my own life coaching.
Boundaries are huge, and make up only one of the four cornerstones/posts to learning to self-parent yourself.
In the next few months, I will be going into more detail about
the elements of self-parenting. If you are willing to do the work,
you can make positive changes in your life. You can let go of the
negative thoughts and behaviors you are unconscious of, and bring
in the peace and harmony that your life should hold. You can be a
happy, vibrant person who truly enjoys life the way you want to live
it. By self-parenting, creating and dis-creating, as you climb your
spiritual ladder to your higher self, you can find a bliss like no other.
Say this mantra each and every day until you are living it: My
outer world reflects my inner world. When you are reflecting that
which you do not want, then it is time to look at it and make those
changes with the help of self-parenting.

he American way of death, when

studied from perspectives that
include carbon lifecycle analysis,
biodegradability, local-sourcing, toxicity
and sustainability, reveals many sad truths.
The death care industry causes significant
and unnecessary harm to our planet.
Here are 10 sad truths worth talking about:

to extract, refine and manufacture them.

1,400 degrees Fahrenheit

A typical cremation exposes human

remains to a direct flame reaching temperatures of 1,400 to 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit for a duration of two to three hours,
resulting in a carbon footprint of 350 to
600 pounds of CO2. Its high school chemistry and conservation of mass. Take the
combined mass of human remains, cremation container and fuel used in cremation,
less the mass of cremated remains returned
in the urn. Fossil fuel, a hydro-carbon,
is composed of hydrogen, carbon and
oxygen. Our bodies are 65 percent oxygen,
18 percent carbon and 10 percent hydrogen by mass. Incineration of our bodies
with fossil fuels primarily produces CO2.

Third-largest contributor
of airborne mercury
contamination

The median cost of a funeral reported by

the National Funeral Directors Association for 2012 is $8,343 and includes $2,400
for a steel casket and $1,300 for a concrete
burial vault. In 1960, the average cost of a
funeral was $708.

800,000 caskets annually

One company, Hillenbrand, Inc. (HI),

manufactures and sells 45 percent of the
1.8 million caskets sold in the United
States annually under the Batesville Casket
Company brand acquired by John A. Hillenbrand in 1906. Profits from casket operations have fueled decades of diversification
and growth and continue to do so generating annual revenues of $500 million with
net profit in the 40 percent range.

2,500 pounds of CO2 from

wicker caskets

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

estimates that cremation is the nations third
largest contributor of airborne mercury
contamination. The National Research
Council estimates that more than 60,000
children are born each year at risk for
adverse neurodevelopmental effects due to
in-utero exposure to mercury.

37 people

$8,343 for a funeral

At the Madison Isthmus Green Day Festival

last April, I kept a tally of 37 individuals who
pledged to change their end-of-life funeral
plans from cremation to a natural burial
after learning about the toxicity of cremation. Making clear and objective information
available to families who want to make an
informed choice has a profound impact.

Many funeral homes offer natural burial

caskets made of wicker, seagrass, banana
leaves or bamboo. While these 60- to
75-pound caskets are biodegradable,
distributing them to your funeral home via
air freight from our nations ports generates a carbon footprint of 1,000 pounds of
CO2. Add that to the carbon produced to
grow and manufacture the natural burial
casket, and you have a larger carbon footprint than a steel casket at 1,500 to 2,000
pounds of CO2! Biodegradable is not the
same as sustainable.

1,636,000 tons of reinforced

concrete vaults

Every year, Americas cemeteries bury

enough steel-reinforced concrete to build a
highway from New York to San Francisco.

Prior to 1900, concrete vaults were unheard

of. While concrete vaults do provide some
function in cemetery service, vaults are not
required by law in Wisconsin. In terms of
carbon, concrete production is the worlds
most expensive building material and is
responsible for 5 percent of the global
carbon footprint.

Red clover
Trifolium pretense

ike peas and beans, red clover belongs to the family of

plants called legumes. Red clover also known as cow
clover, meadow clover or wild clover contains phytoestrogens: compounds similar to the female hormone estrogen.
Historically, red clover has been used for cancer and respiratory problems, such as whooping cough, asthma and bronchitis.
Currently, red clover is used as a traditional or folk remedy for menopausal symptoms, breast pain associated with menstrual cycles, high
cholesterol, osteoporosis and symptoms of prostate enlargement.
The flowering tops of the red clover plant are used to prepare
extracts available in tablets and capsules, as well as in teas and
liquid forms.

What the science says

Several small studies of red clover for menopausal symptoms had

mixed results; however, most of these studies had design flaws.
A large clinical trial and several reviews of the research literature
concluded that red clover had no significant beneficial effects on
menopausal symptoms.
There is not enough scientific evidence to determine whether
red clover is effective for any other health conditions.
The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) is studying red clover to learn more about its active

components and how they might work in the body, including how
red clover isoflavones may affect human prostate cells and the safety
and effectiveness of red clover for menopausal symptoms.

Side effects and cautions

Red clover seems to be safe for most adults when used for short
periods of time. No serious adverse effects have been reported.
Because red clover contains estrogen-like compounds, there
is a possibility that its long-term use would increase the risk of
women developing cancer of the lining of the uterus. However,
studies to date have been too brief (less than six months) to evaluate whether red clover has estrogen-like effects on the uterus.
It is unclear whether red clover is safe for women who are
pregnant or breastfeeding, or who have breast cancer or other
hormone-sensitive cancers.
Tell all your health care providers about any complementary
health practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do
to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe
care. For tips about talking with your health care providers about
complementary and alternative medicine, see NCCAMs Time to
Talk campaign.

Remembering
who
you are

By Julie Hogan

emembering is defined as to be able to bring to ones mind

an awareness of (someone or something that one has seen,
known, or experienced in the past). This is a seemingly
simple concept, but far too often we forget or set to the side our true
essence. This aspect of yourself can be called many things, from
divine self, higher self, light within, or whatever resonates with
you. The importance doesnt lie with the title as much as the reconnection to this magnificent mirror image of you.
Here are a few ways to create this reconnection:

Meditate

Meditation gifts you with an opportunity to listen and allow your

divine self to reveal itself to you. Taking time for quiet in a sacred space
you create may open channels to hear the truths you hold. Breathing
exercises also help to tune you into your life-force energy while centering and bringing awareness, the key component to remembering.
A simple visualization once you have centered with the breath
is to see light filling your physical, mental, emotional and energetic bodies, starting at the heart. Then, allow that light to grow
outward and completely surround you. Continue to honor the
breath. Now bring your attention to your clear intent: For example,
My intent is to journey to where my divine self can be revealed
to me. Recognize that this is for the highest good and greatest joy
of all concerned. The light will guide you to the landscape where
your divine self resides and you now have the opportunity for
remembrance, revelation and learning.
The meditation ends with your gratitude as you follow the path
from which you have come, bringing the light back to your crown
and then through each chakra as you ground yourself and transition gracefully back to ordinary reality.

Do what you love or have loved!

Gift yourself with time to do what brings you bliss; you know what
it is. Joy that comes from your deep passions in life will also ignite
the remembrance of who you are. These are all things that have
helped to define you, but life may have gotten too busy for them.
Finding the time to take back those joys may pay off tenfold by
bringing forth creativity and even wonderment.
www.naturespathways.com

Utilize your gifts in your everyday life

Use the gifts and passions you have discovered above by applying
them each day. This creates a tangible way to stay your authentic
self and can be done through simple acts without creating massive
shifts in your life. Some applications may be seeing you who are
when you look in the mirror, or starting your day with a positive voice and leading with self-love the way your divine self may.
As you continue to cultivate a deep relationship with this aspect
of you, the embodiment of these divine traits may even become
second nature and influence the way you walk in the world.
Enjoy remembering you who are instead of discovering who you
are. These traits are authentic to you and are waiting to be unearthed
to allow light in. Be in awe of your magnificent self each day!

When good food

goes bad
The importance of storing
your pets food properly

By Kimberly Maahs

id you know that by properly

storing your pets food, you could
be protecting their health? You
can purchase the best kibble available but
if its not stored well, it can begin to go bad
in a short amount of time.
Dont believe me? Try this experiment
the next time you bring home a new bag
of food. As soon as you open the bag, take
a cup of the food and put it in a zip-lock
baggy. Put the baggy in the freezer. Now
take the rest of the bag and use and store it

Pet food, like many foods stored at room

temperature, can begin to deteriorate
over time and eventually spoil.
the way you normally would. After about
two weeks, go to the freezer, take the baggy
out and smell the food inside. Now, go and
smell the food youve been feeding your
pets. Notice a difference?
Pet food, like many foods stored at room
temperature, can begin to deteriorate over
time and eventually spoil. Once a sealed
bag is opened, exposing the contents to
moisture and oxygen, ingredients like fats
(your omega-3s and -6s) can turn rancid.
When dry food absorbs moisture from the
air, ingredients like grains can promote
mold growth, albeit microscopic. But that
small amount can still cause damage to
your pets health. And all of those vitamins and minerals that have been added to
balance the food? Over time they can lose
their potency. Thats why manufacturers

add antioxidants to their products. Antioxidants are added to protect the fats
from oxidizing and to help keep the vitamins and minerals from deteriorating too
quickly. Even with the addition of antioxidants, once the bag is opened and there is
continuous exposure to air, they will eventually be used up. More often than not, this
happens before the food is finished.
Because of this, many advances have been
made in the packaging of dry pet food. Most
companies now use bags that help prevent
moisture and oxygen from entering.
Between the advancements in packaging
and the addition of antioxidants, manufacturers are able to insure a shelf life of a year
or more. Havent we all been told to look for
a best by date as an indication of a superior product? Heres a little known fact about
www.naturespathways.com

that date: It only refers to the unopened bag.

Once the bag is opened and the food inside
is exposed, it begins to deteriorate quickly.
Thats where the size of the bag of food you
purchase becomes important.
Selecting an appropriately sized bag of
food for your pet something that will be
eaten in a week to 10 days is the best
choice. Dont get a 15-pound or 30-pound
bag of food for your 5-pound Yorkie just
because its more economical. It could take
several weeks for him to eat it and by the
time you get to the bottom of the bag, that
food youre feeding could potentially make
him sick. If you buy the bigger bag of food,
then separate it into quart- or gallon-size
baggies and store them in the freezer. Feed
your pet one bag at a time. If you have the
freezer space, its a great way to keep the
food fresh.
What about pouring the food into an
airtight container to protect it from spoiling? Instead, its recommended that you
leave the food in the bag and put the bag in
the bin. When you think about it, that does
make more sense. By pouring the food out
of the bag and into the bin, youre removing a layer of protection. Its kind of like
double bagging something before freezing
it to protect it from freezer burn.
Another reason you shouldnt pour dry
food directly into a plastic bin is that toxins
from the plastic can leech into your pets
food, and if the food inside the bin has begun
to spoil, those contaminants can be absorbed
into the plastic. Either way youre contaminating every bag of food you feed your pet.
As you can imagine, the continuous
consumption of spoiled food can be a
contributing factor in chronic health issues
for your pet. By purchasing appropriately
sized bags of food and storing them properly, you can avoid unnecessary health
risks for your beloved companion.

The new
age of food
insecurity

By Lea Dolan-Stroncek

hen we think of malnourished people, most of us

summon up the image of potbellies, stick legs and
the gaunt faces of Africans featured in periodicals.
But that image is no longer true, according to Tracie McMillins
The New Face of Hunger, the latest article in a series on hunger
appearing in National Geographic. We are waking up to the fact
that food insecurity exists and has existed throughout the USA,
in both rural and urban areas, for decades and centuries. Many of
those who are food insecure are overweight yet malnourished due
to a lack of nutritious food.
It is appalling that the new hungry live in one of the richest
countries in the world. In the U.S., 48 million people rely on
food stamps, now called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance
Program, or SNAP, provided by taxpayers. The benefits of this
program boil down to $1.50 per meal, per person, with food
pantries filling in the gaps.
Our government has spent $253.7 billion since 1995, with corn
being the highest crop receiving the most subsidies and soybeans
being fourth, to support farmers who grow massive amounts of
corn and soybeans in the green desert called farmland. Corn
shows up on our tables in the form of soft drinks, processed foods

and meats. While these processed foods are lower in price, they
are high in calories and low in nutrients, all while the price of
fresh foods has risen due to the lack of support in subsidies. Our
nations crops are not feeding the world.
Mark Shepard, author of Restoration Agriculture, once said in
a lecture that every society that has relied on an annual as a staple
crop has failed. In the 1980s, small farmers went out of business due
to low milk prices that had made it impossible to farm small scale.
Homer Peterson was one of the statistics from that era. His practice was contouring his crops of corn, hay and oats between the
waterways, plus milking 30 to 35 cows, raising pigs, and tending
laying hens. He was nearing retirement with no family members
able to afford the financial risk to keep the operation going, so the
cropland was rented to a crop farmer who planted the entire farm
into corn one year, then soybeans the next. This transformed from
a polyculture with animals living on the land to a monoculture
of crops, with no animals to naturally fertilize the soil. With this
monoculture we are reaping low-nutrient foods.

So what is the solution for the malnourished?

Maximize your $1.50-meal budget by making bone broth (a

5-pound bag of bones is $5 and yields 3 quarts of bone broth),
which is full of amino acids. This will help you utilize the good
food you can afford, just as the French did in the 1600s during a
famine. See the bone broth recipe in the following section.
Organ meats are dense in vitamins and minerals, plus a bargain
for the wallet. Stretch more meals out of 1 pound of ground beef
by combining it with ground heart ($1.99 per pound) or shredded
liver ($0.99 per pound) to inexpensively pack in nutrition.
Buy bulk! Directly buy from farmers or community supported
agriculture programs for home canning or freezing to save money.
This can be done by forming buying groups with other food-insecure families.

vitamin C.

Old energy,
new sounds
The beauty and incredible
healing of crystal bowls

By Cecelia Farran

re you becoming aware of the clunky energy of

an old way of thinking/being and the influx of
new, lighter energy choices? If so, you are not alone. War,
conflict and worldwide drama, the bashing and duality of political parties, personal anxiety and daily burdens: we all seem to be
feeling their tiresome weight. Stress and tension really do produce
fatigue, and we are a culture of tired souls. The old seems burdensome, even boring, but how do we access anything better?
To move on to that which is more in line with our divine nature
we need to separate from the drone of mediocrity and the flaying
of a belief system that yields duality, judgment and separation.
When was the last time you consciously turned away from the
negativity of TV news or thought positively? Has it occurred to
you to examine your beliefs about who you truly are? Maybe you
feel lost in a miasmic sea of I just dont know anything anymore.
That might feel scary and depressing, but it is actually a good
thing, for it means you are ready to question the old and open
yourself to something new.

Here is an exercise to help sensitize you to how old energy

sounds so you can decipher it and make choices to move away
from it.
Listen to mainstream news/advertising. How do the words
make you feel? Icky? Sticky? Tired? Heavy? Uncomfortable?
Scrambled? Feel the vibrations of the words and tone. Chances
are they are the vibrations of a duality mindset of judgment and
fear fear that you might not be as cool, beautiful, handsome or
positioned as well as you should be. Or that you are not enough or
do not have enough. Do the words raise a knot in the pit of your
stomach about the worlds situation? How spoken words leave you
feeling is a big clue as to what energy they are encoding.
In contrast, consider the sound of crystal bowls. An ethereal
lightness of being naturally emanates from them. Feel how different it is from the words of mainstream media. The vibration of
their crystalline structure resonates, not with the thinking mind,

The power
of oxygen
Evidence-based medicine for
enhancing quality of life

By Arun Mukherjee, M.D., et al.

s physicians, our goal is to utilize as many safe and effective protocols as possible to help improve quality of life
for our patients. There are several modalities that have
demonstrated benefit, but many fall short of accomplishing a
therapeutic effect for a wide range of indications.
Within our modality, we utilize hyperbaric oxygen therapy
(HBOT) as an adjunct therapy to support the bodys innate
ability to repair and regenerate. Thousands of studies have been
published about HBOT and now more new evidence has demonstrated that low-pressure HBOT has the ability to provide the
same beneficial effects when compared to higher pressures.
As medical professionals, we conducted a controlled longitudinal study to assess the effects of intensive rehabilitation combined
with HBOT on gross motor function in 150 children with cerebral
palsy (CP). This eight-month study involved every child receiving

54

Natures Pathways | September 2014

the same intensive rehabilitation care by the same therapist team,

at the same center, using the same protocol and the same duration
of follow up. All children in all groups received standard rehabilitation, with three groups also including HBOT into their regimen.
Before revealing the astounding results, lets look at the mechanisms of action with respect to oxygen and its role in CP. Since the
leading causes for CP originate from a critical reduction of oxygen
delivery to a part of the developing brain, we hypothesized that
HBOTs ability to increase blood flow and oxygen levels in the
brain also has the potential to increase brain activity in children
with CP. Low oxygen levels in the brain can cause neuronal death;
however, there is a documented phenomenon called the ischemic penumbra, which defines an area of tissue that surrounds
the lesion zone. Cells within this region receive enough oxygen to
survive in a dormant state, but not enough to function properly.
Research proposes that these dormant neurons may be recoverable much longer than previously believed.
This is where regenerative medicine comes into action. HBOT
has shown reproducible benefits for more than two decades in
hundreds of children with CP around the world. Using highquality single-photon emission tomography imagery, several
studies of children with CP and of adults after a stroke have
shown that HBOT may regenerate or revive cells in the penumbra within the brain.
With HBOTs documented success in developing new blood
vessels in wound healing, the increased vascular activity could
allow for the reactivation of dormant neurons. In addition, the
higher tissue oxygen levels provided by HBOT may also provide
better metabolism and function of unaffected cells. By taking
these mechanisms of action into consideration, we were confident
www.naturespathways.com

in the potential therapeutic results of our study.

Our study commenced after assigning the children into four
groups. Our control group consisted of children who did not
undergo hyperbaric treatments and participated in standard
rehabilitation only. The rehabilitation program was applied for
two hours per day, six days a week, over six months, and consisted
of a half-hour of individual therapies including physical therapy,
occupational therapy, speech therapy and special education. The
three other groups were assigned to hyperbaric treatment, in
addition to receiving standard rehabilitation. All HBOT groups
received 40 one-hour sessions, six days a week.
The first HBOT group was treated at 1.3 atmospheres absolute
(ATA) with compressed air. No supplemental oxygen was given to
this group. The second HBOT group was treated at 1.5 ATA with
100 percent oxygen delivered through a hood system. Finally, the
third HBOT group was treated at 1.75 ATA, also with 100 percent
oxygen delivered through a hood system.
This is the first study that compared the effects of different hyperbaric dosages combined with rehabilitation in children with CP,
to a control group who received only rehabilitation. As expected
with intensive therapies, all four groups improved. However, our
findings demonstrated that the three groups treated with different
dosages of HBOT improved significantly more than the control
group. The HBOT groups gross and fine motor function variations
were on average three times higher than the control.
For the three HBOT groups, there was no significant statistical difference between the observed improvements. We found

Integrative Hyperbaric Centers

that administering mild-pressure HBOT at 1.3 ATA has the

potential to be equally effective when compared to higher pressures. Furthermore, the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and
Quality (AHRQ) analyzed the results of this study and arrived at
the same conclusions. The AHRQ report said, The possibility that
pressurized room air had a beneficial effect on motor function
should be considered the leading explanation. In this context, the
increase of upwards to 50 percent plasma oxygenation achieved
by compressed air at 1.3 ATA was of significance.
This study provides further credibility to the substantial effects
of HBOT at low pressure. We are excited to share this groundbreaking evidence with the medical community and the public
at large. Portable or soft hyperbaric chambers operate at 1.3 ATA
and are the safest and most convenient way to receive HBOT. The
fact that an individual can have one in their home, makes this
therapy very accessible and cost-effective.

Safe ways to
lose weight
in advance of
your
wedding

any couples aspire to lose weight in the months leading

up to their weddings. Few things are a bigger weightloss motivator than being on display during a wedding,
where guests will have their eyes trained on the happy couple.
Brides- and grooms-to-be often cite their impending nuptials as
a reason to shed some pounds. A Cornell University study found
70 percent of the roughly 270 engaged women interviewed for
the study said they wanted to lose weight for their weddings, with
many citing a desire to lose as much as 20 pounds. Losing this
amount of weight is feasible over a significant period of time. But
according to Samantha Heller, a registered dietitian and exercise
physiologist at New York Universitys Langone Medical Center in
New York City, many people get consumed with other wedding
details and forget about weight loss until the last minute, causing
many to resort to drastic measures to lose weight in the weeks
before walking down the aisle.
Quick fixes may result in rapid weight loss, but all too often
such measures dont work as expected and may cause unexpected
side effects. In addition, crash diets or extreme cleanses usually
will not help a person keep weight off, which leads to many people
packing on the pounds once they return from their honeymoon.
Losing weight and keeping that weight off requires that men and
women make lifestyle changes, which often include alterations to
their eating habits.
BEGIN YOUR PLAN EARLY. Make weight loss as much of a

priority as planning the wedding. Schedule a time to speak with

a physical trainer and/or dietician who can help you develop a
healthy weight loss plan. It may take several months to a year for
you to lose weight the right way. Plan accordingly so you will not
be scrambling at the last minute.
SET REASONABLE GOALS. Losing 15 to 20 pounds is entirely

possible in six months to a year, but losing that much weight in

a week is unlikely. Determine how much time you have and set
weekly or monthly goals, which can keep you on track and motivate you to lose the weight.

DONT BUY CLOTHES IN SMALLER SIZES. Some brides-to-be

order their wedding gowns in the sizes they hope to fit into come
their wedding day. This is never a good idea, as it may create undue
56

Natures Pathways | September 2014

stress that can make losing weight even more difficult. Gowns are also
quite expensive. Its easier to alter a gown to make it smaller and much
more complicated (and expensive) to add fabric to increase the size.
KEEP YOUR DOCTOR INFORMED. It is always best to consult

with a doctor before starting a weight-loss regimen. Your doctor

may suggest certain strategies to facilitate weight loss. Furthermore, you may be able to stop taking certain medications that can
cause weight gain.
COMBINE CARDIOVASCULAR EXERCISE AND WEIGHT
TRAINING WHEN WORKING OUT. Cardiovascular exercise

alone will not help you lose the maximum amount of weight.
Toned muscle will continue to burn calories and rev up your
metabolism long after your workout is over. You do not need to
use heavy weights; just enough to provide resistance and force
your muscles to work a little harder.
DONT SKIP MEALS. Skipping meals or eating at irregular inter-

vals will make your body think it is starving. This slows down your
metabolism as your body works to preserve energy and retain fat,
which is counterproductive to your goal of losing weight. Eat at
regular intervals and enjoy several small, healthy meals per day.
Avoid foods that are high in fat, sodium and refined carbohydrates.
Stick to complex carbohydrates that are full of fiber and lean protein.
REMEMBER TO STAY HYDRATED. Symptoms of dehydration

can mimic those of hunger. If you start feeling hunger pangs, try
a glass of water before you munch on a snack. Your body just may
be telling you it needs more fluids.
Wedding weight loss goals are common, and couples can lose
weight safely if they avoid crash diets and begin a healthy eating
and exercise plan early on.

Your body is
an
ecosystem

By Kathryn Coppola

OOH, WHATS IT like? This is the question I often get once

someone finds out that Im an acupuncturist. Their question is

full of curiosity as well as hesitation. Many people find acupuncture mysterious, foreign and often assume untrue things about
it. Today I thought I would shed light onto what an acupuncture
treatment is really like, and why people who are needle phobic
even end up so relaxed during the treatment that they take a nap.

The intake

Acupuncture is only one branch of traditional Chinese medicine

(TCM). The basic principle of TCM is that the mind and body are
integrated into one large interconnected network, like an ecosystem,
not just parts and pieces working independently. This holistic philosophy can be seen immediately with comprehensive intake forms that
cover every aspect of your physical, mental and emotional state.
As an acupuncturist, I want to understand not just your present
state, but also how you got there. In addition to the health history
information you and I will discuss, I will also check your pulse
on both wrists and look at your tongue. These are two diagnostic
tools that add to the overall picture. What am I looking for on your
tongue? Color and shape of the tongue body, moisture level, and
presence, absence, thickness and color of the tongue coat. With a
holistic view, all of this information and seemingly unrelated symptoms help to show where the pattern of imbalance is in your body.
Acupuncture treatments are then targeted to your underlying root
condition.
Think of your body as an ecosystem. One example could be the
absence of wolves in Olympic National Park that led to an increase
in elk population, who overate shrubs and trees. The decrease in
trees caused severe erosion and changed the nature of the rivers,
which in turn affected everything from the salmon to song birds.
To help the song birds, ecologists need to go to the root cause: the
wolves. This explains why when someone comes in for treatment
of migraines, they might also find that the occasional insomnia
they were suffering from or irritability when stressed also subsided.
Acupuncturists use your symptoms and information from your
tongue and pulse to work toward deciphering your root condition.

The treatment

Most acupuncture treatments take place lying on a comfortable

www.naturespathways.com

massage table or reclining in a chair. Your acupuncturist will need

to access various parts of your body and limbs, so its a good idea
to wear loose-fitting clothing. The points treated depend on what
you are being treated for, and the underlying pattern of imbalance.
Everyones favorite question is, Does it hurt? Often when
people hear the word needle, the first thought that comes to
mind is a memory of getting blood drawn or receiving a shot.
Those types of needles are hypodermic needles, also known as
syringes, and yes, they hurt. However, acupuncture needles are
very thin, about the width of a hair.
Although the needles dont hurt, you might experience some mild
or strange sensations. For example, some people will feel a heaviness
or ache around a point, or a warmth or coolness, possibly a buzzing
or movement sensation. Sometimes other points that are not needled
will have a sensation. All of these feelings are normal; it is also normal
not to feel anything during acupuncture. You are more likely to be
aware of the needles if you move, so it is better to lie still and relax.
During your treatment, while the needles are in, it is the perfect
opportunity to take time out of your busy day to actually allow yourself to relax. Take a nap. Believe it or not, even high-anxiety and
needle-phobic patients fall asleep. This is possible because acupuncture stimulates the release of endorphins and serotonin, your natural
feel-good chemicals, moving you away from the fight-or-flight
mode into rest-and-digest. Several patients have told me that they
didnt believe me when I said they would relax enough to take a nap.
Another patient compared the treatment to an hour-long savasana or
corpse pose, yogas final resting pose.
If youve never experienced acupuncture, there is no better time
than the present to invest in a healthier, happier life.

Reiki:
Universe life
force
energy

By Ken-Adi Ring

hat is universal life force? Universal means all

pervasive, in and around, flowing through and within
all expressions of life. Life encompasses all living
things and force is the application of energy, as in ki from source.
In this context, it means to heal and balance the body of energy
that is out of integrity and out of balance, to correct that energy so
it thrives in its host vehicle. Reiki is a gentle, yet powerful healing
art of laying on of hands to promote healing of the body, mind
and emotions; and can be used on people, plants and animals
alike. It is great for children, especially those with attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Measurable results are
sometimes immediate or can occur over a longer stretch of time
and continued treatment in the very ill. Reiki training consists
of first, second and third degree levels and use of symbols. Basically, first degree attunes you to your innate healing ability, the
second attunes you to distance healing, and the third attunes you
to master teacher level with the highest channeling power/ability.
It is said that reiki energy has been available since the beginning of time. Credit for its discovery and modern day practice
begins with the venerable Mikao Usui from Japan in the mid-19th
century. Usui was a Christian minister and a principle teacher of
the Doshisha University Kyoto, Japan. Usui, inspired by his own
curiosity and spiked by the inquiry of his students to describe the
true healing ability of Jesus, was determined to find the answer.
Researching and discovering this healing ability became his lifes
passion. He did not get anywhere with local Christian authorities, so he left the university. Reiki healing may have roots in
Buddhism before Christ, so Dr. Usui moved on to inquire in the
Tibetan Buddhist Temple. Gautama Siddharthas teaching has
remarkable similarities to Christs teachings.
The Buddhist monks, also of little help, directed Usui to delve
www.naturespathways.com

deeper into spiritual sources such as the ancient Sanskrit texts.

Not knowing Sanskrit, he went to the U.S. to study for seven
years, studying comparative religions, learning to read Sanskrit
and earning his doctorate of theology. Usui then returned to Japan
where he lived in a Zen Buddhist monastery for intensive devotional study of Sanskrit, and also where he discovered the healing
techniques for which he was searching. To develop a deeper
awareness, Usui went into seclusion at the top of Mt. Koriyama
for a 21-day fasting in prayer and meditation. On the final day,
he was struck by a beam of light between the eyes, which opened
his third eye. He had an epiphany, which expanded his awareness
and brought visions of special symbols in colored bubbles of light.
Usui took his method of energy healing throughout Japan.
Healing miracles followed him as he shared the laying on of hands
many benefited from. He named it reiki, which means universal life

A nostalgic note
A healthier college student

By Emily Niesen

any students go off to college with the idea that they will
graduate a healthier individual. Based on my observation and analysis, though, this is far from common.
We can change this and by doing so, graduate students with
an education in both school and well-being! It doesnt have to be
four (or more) years of ramen noodles, microwave mac & cheese,
and pudding cups. All-nighters are not an expectation and neither
is the horrific freshman 15 (or is it the sophomore 30 now?).
There are numerous ways to be a healthy college student; whether
you start off on the right foot from the beginning or change your
perspective now.

Taco Trivia. Ask the hall director if funds can be used on shared

break than to dine as a family over nourishing food?

Save your (and your parents) money!

You probably dont even realize how much money is wasted on

campus food and beverages. Whether you skip meals, waste food
or buy coffee drinks to stay awake, there are better ways to spend
your money. Cut back on meal plans and see the preceding dormlife section to save money on food. Try out different routines:
breakfast in your dorm, lunch on campus and dinner with friends
back at the hall.
Stay away from the cafes! If you werent a coffee drinker before
college, dont start. It will save you so much money, calories, crashes
and cravings that set you up for poor decisions later. Instead, try the
flavored water tip mentioned in the previous section.

Move and socialize

Going home to do a load of laundry and enjoy a home-cooked

meal once in a while is great. Just make sure you stay on campus
enough to meet new people and explore the diverse experiences
college has to offer.
Instead of saving the weekends to party, weekdays to sleep and
go to class, and the weeknights to pull all-nighters studying, plan
ahead and start taking responsibility. Do you have a long week of
projects and exams? Plan a few hours on the weekend to explore
a new city hot spot. Go hiking with some friends, read on the
beach, shop the cute downtown, or play Frisbee. Try volunteering
in something related to a course or something outside your field
to be better-rounded.
Try to spend any time you have on campus moving. That
doesnt mean you have to go sweat it out at the gym for two hours.
It means going for a walk with a friend, biking in between classes
and going a little longer if class gets out early, and taking the stairs
at all times. No one is going to make fun of you for a few jumping
jacks and push-ups during your study breaks. Ok, maybe they
will, but ask them to join!
For many students, college is the first time they are on their
own. Its difficult learning how to do laundry, let alone make a
grocery list and buy healthy food. One of the main challenges
college students face is not knowing how to plan and implement
their goals. The first step is learning how to take advantage of your
resources. Try the tips in this article and never be afraid to take
charge of your own health!

REIKI: UNIVERSE LIFE FORCE ENERGY CONTINUED FROM 59.

force energy. Usui lectured throughout Japan, performing healings in diverse communities from slums to nobility, and trained
thousands of people. Fewer than 20 became reiki master teachers. Most notable of these, Chujiro Hayashi, a former naval
officer, became Usuis successor in 1930. Hayashi spread reiki
healing beyond Japans borders, training both men and women.
Many were drawn to his clinic in Tokyo where he trained 16 reiki
masters. One was Hawayo Takata from Hawaii, who received a
miraculous healing in Hayashis clinic and later became Hayashis successor. The first female leader, Takata, brought reiki
to Hawaii and then later to the mainland, where it spread and
evolved further. She was told by Hayashi to never give the training away for free, in hopes that it would become more valued.
For most of the mid-20th century, becoming a reiki master
teacher was an expensive commitment and cost in excess of
$11,000 to reach third degree mastery. In the last 25 years,
a calling for a deep healing movement to make reiki and
mastery more accessible and available was implemented,
given the need for it in our stressful world. The cost for the
training has come down considerably and varies from teacher
to teacher, yet its value has not diminished. Divergent schools
of thought exist. Reiki has become more common and is now
even offered as an integrative medical option in some mainstream clinics and hospitals, along with massage therapy. In
order to become a dedicated reiki healer, one must choose an
experienced teacher.
I give thanks to my reiki master teachers, Helen Borth, Robert
Threlfall, Catherine Anne Milner and author Diane Stein, for
training and providing source material.
Ken-Adi Ring has been a reiki healer since 1984, and master
teacher since 1991. He has been a practicing massage therapist
for over three decades, managing Tri-Unity Wellife Associates in Madison
since 1975. Ken-Adi is also a yoga/meditation practitioner/certified instructor. Through Tri-Unity, Ring has produced 20 years of Mother Earth Festival
Gatherings and Wellife Mind Body Spirit expos. Since the turn of the millennia,
he has produced shows bringing leading-edge authors and speakers, such as
Deepak Chopra, MD, Wayne Dyer, Marianne Williamson and performance
artists such as R. Carlos Nakai, promoting wellness, consciousness and evolving our relationships with ourselves and our universe. Ring is a professionally
trained hypnotherapist and trainer. For more information, visit www.wellife.

Adventures in
(self) awareness
Maintaining mindful focus

By Nikki Cohen-Wichner, MS, LMFT

To be interested in the changing seasons is a happier state of mind

than to be hopelessly in love with spring.

George Santayana (1863-1952)

iving in the present moment can be challenging when the

computer of your mind constantly processes the worries,
doubts and fears inherent to the changing of seasons,
whether they be seasons of the year or seasons of our lives. Yet
regardless of our age, healthy aging is less of a challenge when we
learn how to live fully in the present moment rather than drowning in the fears that hide in the shadows of our minds.
Take a moment to read Santayanas quote again quietly
and to yourself. Ponder what it could mean for you to maintain
a mindful focus on the daily changes in nature as this fall flows
into the first winter to follow one of Wisconsins coldest winters
on record. Allow yourself to simply notice your response to this
quote and the inherent philosophy reflected within it.

62

Natures Pathways | September 2014

Were you able to focus on the beauty of leaves changing color

and skies filled with summer birds migrating south? Or were you
too distracted by memories of the polar vortex, propane shortages
and seemingly endless weeks of arctic weather? Please try not to
judge your response to this exercise; simply be aware.
Now change the quote slightly: To be interested in the natural
changes inherent to aging is a happier state of mind than to be hopelessly in love with ones own youth.
Take another moment to ponder what it could mean for you to
maintain a mindful focus on the natural changes in your mind,
body, spirit and relationships as your current stage of life flows
toward the inevitable end-of-life-journey.

GROW YOUR

Allow yourself to simply notice your response to the last two

sentences as well as parallels between this response and your
response to the initial quote. Could you see hopes fulfilled and
wisdom reflected in your changing body? Or did internalized
voices of our youth-worshipping culture drown those out? Were
your responses mindfully present or drifting into a realm of fear?
Be honest with yourself. Nobodys listening to you except your
inner guide, so take a moment to jot a few mental notes on the
notepad that guide your inner compass and youre on your way to
unlocking doors that can prevent truly healthy aging.
Some say there is no greater sense of focus than the state of
being that occurs when we face our fears head-on. The fear of
growing old and dying, along with the losses inherent to our
journey toward the great beyond, tend to be some of the deepest
fears humans experience. Unfortunately, too many of us keep
these fears locked inside. This complicates the grieving process
that is a natural partner along this long journey and can damage
our relationship with ourselves and others.
Horseback riding has been referred to as meditation in
motion because the horse looks to the rider as a natural leader;
lose focus or begin to doubt yourself without being honest about
your fears and you may struggle to regain the horses trust in your
leadership. Equine facilitated experiential learning (EFEL) and
equine facilitated psychotherapy (EFP) sessions taught by properly credentialed professionals provide a safe, fun and effective
mode for learning how to remain fully present while practicing
authentic leadership and communication skills.
According to a recent review of therapies and interventions
involving horses published by the American Psychological Association, EFEL and EFP models use mounted and un-mounted
activities in a team facilitator or individual psychotherapy
approach based on the philosophy that people do not change
unless they are uncomfortable. Like horses, people often remain
in painful situations or run and hide from pressure.
Think back a moment to those notes you jotted down about
your fears of the changing seasons of your life and consider if
these activities could hold a key that helps you face your fears with
hope and courage to age gracefully.

Making
criticism your
friend

By Barry Kerr and Kristine Gay

hink of the last time someone criticized or complained

about your behavior. How did it feel? Easy-peasy? Painful?
If youre like most of us, criticism and complaints can be
an uneasy experience, and sometimes even crushing. It can feel
like youre being judged, rejected and told you arent good enough.
Dang! Its not like you deliberately try to do things badly, right?
Heres the thing about criticism and complaints: Its not about
being right or wrong. Its not even about you! Really?
Our families, relationships and culture tend to demonstrate
that the normal and accepted way to give negative feedback to
someone is through blame, shame, emotional drama, accusations,
assumptions, judgments and interpretations of motives. Being
on the receiving end of such a message surely feels like its about
you, right? When someone is so emotionally upset with you, the
tendency is to either accept the blame or become defensive, but
neither reaction is helpful or healthy. Heres why.
Feedback from others is always about them. They are giving you
information about how they experience you, but their experience
is not you. Its their experience, which includes their values, their
sensibilities, their tastes, their fears and their emotional history.
These are subjective and unique to everyone. Yes, your behavior
may stimulate all of this in them, but its them, not you.
If they want you to know their experience of you, its their job to
tell you. Its your job to discern what in their feedback, if anything,
is relevant and meaningful to your future choices.
Lets say youre on a date. Youre out for the evening, and an
attractive person comes up to you and starts flirting. You flirt
back a bit, without any intention of getting involved. Youre simply
enjoying the attention, and you then decisively and subtly let this
person know youre not interested and they go away. Your date,
who was standing nearby, launches into a tirade. What was that?!
I cant believe you did that. Youre comin on to him and Im right
here? What kind of jerk are you?
This is definitely a critical complaint about your behavior! But
is it about you? No. Its about your companion. Your date is giving
you information about how he/she experienced your behavior and
the feelings that were invoked. Embedded in it is implied information about his/her interpretation of your motives, intentions,
64

Natures Pathways | September 2014

values, trustworthiness, etc. And the intensity of the emotions

is the result of these interpretations. The emotions are shouting,
Dont do that again! This demands an equivalent emotional
response from you. Or does it?
You could let your partners emotional demand pull you into an
emotional match, either succumbing to guilt and shame or lashing
back with angry defensiveness. This makes it about you. If you
choose to go that way, you will spin off into a negative emotional
experience, miss the important information in front of you and
once again prove that criticism is painful and undesirable.
Or you can resist an emotional reaction and compassionately
acknowledge the emotional intensity as a measure of your partners inner disturbance, letting that inform how you value the
feedback. This makes it about your partner.
From there, you are in a position to be consciously present to
the information that is there for you. If its about your companion, you can be present to his/her pain, empathize without taking
blame, and then be curious, asking questions that will help you
understand how your partner experiences your behavior. This
can lead to clearing up misunderstandings and assumptions, new
appreciations for another persons unique inner world and feelings, and new insights about how your choices relate to that.
With this information, and standing squarely in your own
values, you might choose to amend your flirting behaviors to
align with your relationship goals or you might decide this person
has insecurity issues that have nothing to do with your flirting.
Either way, the feedback did not make you wrong or bad. It just
gave you more information.
A life coach can help you learn this so you will begin to invite
feedback proactively, without fear, knowing it will lead to better
choices for you and for others.
