LETTER FROM THE TE

magazine
A life worth living

Because we dont know when we will die, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well. Yet everything happens only a certain number of times, and a very small
number really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of
your childhood, an afternoon that is so deeply a part of your being that you cant
even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four, five times more, perhaps not
even that. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps 20.
And yet it all seems limitless. Paul Bowles, The Sheltering Sky

Why are you running?

Our culture is obsessed with the concept of being busy. As a result, ours is a
hurried existence. Once the morning alarm blares, we race from the moment we
step out of bed to the moment we collapse back into it.
The more rushed your day, the more important you are. The more hours you
spend at work, the more dedicated you are. The more time you take moving, doing,
working, going the less time you have to ponder whether you are truly fulfilled.
As a nation, we boast of our greatness, yet a dismally small fraction of our days
are truly devoted to being happy. We survive solely for the weekend, the next
vacation, the upcoming holiday, the newest gadget. But when youre constantly
waiting for the next big thing, how many sunrises, embraces from your child,
smiles from your partner, walks in the park, enjoyable conversations, cuddles
with your pet and phone calls with an old friend have you missed?
When did you last live in the moment? When did you last feel the joy and
limitless possibility of life itself?

Take this moment and make it better

Imagine our world with a little less busy and a little more happiness. What if we
all spent a little more of our days focused on self-fulfillment? When were happy,
were better able to make others happy too.
You can be the spark that makes this happen. Make a promise right now
to focus on the moment; to experience joy and to share it with others.
If this task is daunting, the articles in the following pages can help. Our writers and
advertisers offer tips to help you and yours live well. Learn how to practice mindfulness and stay healthy enough to make the best of your time on this earth. By doing so,
you can make a positive difference in the lives of all whom you encounter.
Live today, dont just survive it. Remember: That new smartphone, the TV, the
last email at work can wait. Your happiness and well-being shouldnt have to.

Discovering
your healing
story
place

By Richard Hanhardt MS, MBA, BCSLC

any of us have reached a point where the old stories of our

lives, as good or as bad as they are, need to be replaced
with stories for the future. These new stories may be
filled with hope, joy, new symbols, new players and a story line that
is healing. This becomes important because we tend to live out the
stories we believe in. Changing our stories can change how we live.
We have been taught that whatever our stories are, we have to
make the best of them. Nobody in our culture seems to think that
stories can be changed once they are told a few times. If the stories
are negative they can feel like a life sentence. We are the first
culture in history to believe this and this loss of story-changing
capacity is a source of pain.
For example, the early Greeks and Romans, and most other
early cultures, developed rich mythology to explain life events.
Changes in life could happen by the actions of the gods at any
time. If you went for a walk in the woods by a stream and saw
the sun sparkling on the ripples of the water, you might return
to report to the people in your village that you had been blessed
by a river nymph you saw dancing on the water. Everyone would

consider this experience perfectly normal and wonderful, and

they would add your new gift to your identity.
Native American young men and women discovered new
stories on vision quests. They returned from being alone in the
wilderness for many days with new symbols and dreams to tribes
eagerly waiting to hear these sacred changes in the lives of their
young people. Perhaps they danced these stories and symbols for
the tribe around a great fire dedicated to celebration. These young
people then became initiated into adulthood and were given new
names based on their vision quest experiences. Some of the stories
became part of the culture.
Shamans from many cultures were very special people who had
been to the other side and returned with healing stories. When
someone was sick (including emotional illness), the healing story
was told and acted out. This process was imbued with many symbols
and activities that the Shaman felt necessary for healing to occur.
Perhaps you are thinking these examples are considered primitive. You would be right, but they worked! Why? Notice that in
these examples a change in life story was possible, and it could
happen at any time without judgment or analysis by anyone. This
was possible for one reason: These people had a constant access to
their Story Places. But what is a Story Place?
The Story Place is a space inside, and it is best envisioned as
located within your body. (Emotions live in the body.) It is the
place where we learned to be comfortable with stories as children.
It is also the place you enter when you sit in a darkened theater

anticipating, with great excitement, an intense story about to

unfold in front of you. Or imagine having a story read to you as a
child. Perhaps you are sitting on the lap of a parent or grandparent
with a favorite book. The book opens and the voice of your caretaker begins. You are in a remarkable space now, a special place
that is just for you to live in. The Story Place is:
QUIET AND SILENT: Quietness is a quality of no external noise

and silence is the quality of no internal noise. Both live in the

For your
pets sake,
take care of
yourself!

By Jodie Gruenstern, DVM, CVA

s a holistic veterinarian, I would like to remind you, as

a pet guardian, that your pets well-being is dependent
upon and influenced by your emotional and physical
health. Take care of yourself!
There are many human health practitioners, resources and
products that can help you with your healthy life journey. Some of
these can be shared between you and your pet, which makes them
extra fun and economical:
We should all eat a variety of fresh, local, species-appropriate
foods every day.
We should all, humans and carnivores, get plenty of fresh air,
water and exercise every day.
These basic health recommendations have been reiterated by
many health practitioners time and again, yet these foundational

principles, although the most important, seem to be the most

difficult to implement!

A species-appropriate diet

Eat a variety of fresh, local, species-appropriate foods? What does

this mean?
For your carnivorous dog or cat, this means mimic a prey-concept
diet as closely as possible. There are dozens of brands of commercial
raw diets and home prep recipes which can fulfill this need.
For a human, the choices are more complicated. Do you
consider yourself a primate vegetarian? Are you a hunter/gatherer
who follows a paleo diet? In either case, fresh and local will be
most nutritious. Starchy, processed foods fortified with synthetic,
laboratory-derived vitamins and minerals are not common sense
choices for you or your pet.
www.naturespathways.com

Adequate hydration is the

key to management of
two of the most important
health issues: detoxification
and weight balancing.
Healthy water

Are you drinking well water or city water? Is it being filtered?

Most people feel their water needs to be filtered to remove
heavy metals and other toxins. Did you know that ultra-filtered
water may be leading to sodium and trace mineral deficiencies?
Additionally, water that is devoid of solutes does not help you
retain moisture in your vessels to nurture your tissues. Despite
drinking more water, many live in a perpetual state of dehydration. To counter this phenomenon, some health practitioners
are recommending the addition of Celtic Sea Salt to water to
prevent dehydration. Adequate hydration is the key to management of two of the most important health issues: detoxification
and weight balancing.

Exercise

So, you say you have no time to exercise and enjoy the fresh air?
Multi-task and take your dog and yourself for a walk! A very
inspirational motivational speaker once said the attainment
of success is determined by what you do between 7 and 9 p.m.
Turn off that television! Whether you measure success by wealth
accumulation, physical fitness, the ability to care for others or the
happiness of your pet, those two hours per day can make or break
your achievements in these areas.

Emotional environment

Your dog or cat is like the proverbial canary in the coal mine. The
canary was sent into the mine to let miners know if the mine was
safe or not. Dont create an environment where your pet needs to
be a warning signal to you!
Your pet is like a sponge that soaks up the good and the bad
all around. There are dogs that are able to predict when a child is
about to have a seizure. Some are able to sniff out cancer. For eons,
dogs have naturally protected their guardians if threatened. Pets
are innately very sensitive and intuitive.
Be aware that an emotionally unstable environment will rub off
on your dog or cat. We see pets with phobias and obsessive compulsive disorders. Cats who incessantly lick out their fur are said to have
psychogenic neurodermatitis. We see hundreds of pets with allergies,
autoimmune diseases and cancer. It is uncanny to hear the stories
of the guardians in these same households and learn the similarities
between the pets and the human disorders in a given family.

Natural home health care

I have learned that some of the best natural health modalities that
can be shared among pets and pet parent are essential oils. These
www.naturespathways.com

can provide an all-inclusive approach to health management by

addressing prevention and treatment of mind-body disorders,
as well as environmental management. Each essential oil has
an emotional energetic as well as a medicinal component. For
example, the oil blend called Valor incites a sense of confidence or
bravery and is often called chiropractor in a bottle, as it seems to
help patients hold their adjustments. Human massage therapists
apply this to the foots vita flex points. I apply this to the underside
of the paws and lightly over the top of the head, ears and spine.
Copaiba is one of my favorite single oils. It smells very earthy. It
gives me a sense of connection and strength. It is high in a chemical constituent called beta-caryophyllene, which is a potent antiinflammatory. This is often the first oil I apply when layering on to
a pets inflamed, arthritic stifle, back or hip.
I call this type of massage and oil application petting with
intent. There is nothing more satisfying for the pet and pet parent
than this type of mutually beneficial interaction.

Silence is golden
It opens doors to the answers
we all have inside

By Kim Hall

SHHHHHHHH CAN YOU FEEL THAT?

The dash is a simple reflection of a pause. When was the most

recent time you have experienced true, complete silence for more
than five minutes?

12

Natures Pathways | September 2014

The definition of silence is golden = keeping ones mouth shut is a

great virtue. Although this precise phrase was first recorded in 1848, it
is part of a much older proverb, Speech is silver and silence is golden.
It reminds me of the wise saying, We have two ears and one
mouth. Which means to listen twice as much as we speak. Hence
it makes sense that silence is golden. One of the quietest places we
can go is within, like a bear hibernating in the cave for the winter.
My journey experiencing silence began in 2001 in meditation
classes with Carol Roberts. It was perfect timing as I was balancing all
the business at work and building a family. The simple act of sitting in
silence was golden all on its own. The peace of mind and the answers
that showed up in those quiet times to simplify my life were profound.
I was hooked. It opened doors to listening through the silence.
There was more to the world than met my eyes. The silence
opened me to feel and heal. The silence opened my heart to listen.
Womens meditation retreats led me to learn more about Native
American practices. Gathering around the fire, playing the drums,
being in the stillness of nature through family adventure journeys
and a vision quest. They practice the West direction is the space,
and like the bear during hibernation, we go within.
The Art of Feminine Presence is a silent practice, shifting the
attention from our head bubble, where there is constant chatter,
to the womb and heart space. It shines light on the way to listen
and witness women in peace.
So much time of my life Ive spent in my head bubble analyzing
and over analyzing. Recently I experienced 10 days of silence on
a Vipassanna retreat. There are so many ways to savor the silence.
One of the quietest places we can go is within. My teacher Carol
Roberts said all of our answers are within. Its when we listen, we truly
win. My CARE teacher, Dr. Stuart, said we all have the ability to heal
ourselves when we slow enough to listen to what comes from within.
What amount of silence or quiet time is part of your every day
or week? Are you comfortable in silence? What amount of time
www.naturespathways.com

Imagine a world where a habit or

ritual of silence became mainstream,
where it was more than OK to
pause and reflect on our next best
step, to discover from within an
answer that can truly create a win.
can you be silent for?
There are so many ways we can get bursts of silence during
our everyday. Three golden ways that light the way are: a sunrise
(listen as the sun comes over the horizon on the beach), a sunset
(listen as the sun slips beyond the horizon with gratefulness of the
beauty it brings), the golden flame of a white candle (listen as it
shimmers and glows). Imagine a drive home with zero radio, zero
TV for 24 hours and letting go of your cell phone for an entire day.

You can observe cleansing silence in seven

ways:
Simply listening in nature
Walk in silence through a labyrinth
Sleep
Meditation classes
Vipassanna retreats
Art of Feminine Presence sessions
Awaken Higher Brain Living sessions

At our house, times are best when we practice peace time,

short bursts of 20 minutes of quiet time after school and work.
It simply calms everyone after a day in the classroom and buses
full of busy energy.
Imagine a world where a habit or ritual of silence became
mainstream, where it was more than OK to pause and reflect on
our next best step, to discover from within an answer that can
truly create a win. While traveling in Egypt, I heard the mosques
sound for people to go into silent prayer several times a day. In
Bali, the rituals included morning offerings that expressed gratefulness. It is possible to create our own ritual honoring ourselves
in the silence.
The silence can transform us, our thoughts and our actions on
health and wealth. The inspirations silence will bring us can truly
be golden!

Get a better
down dog with
puppy
dog

By Hope Zvara

f you are a yogi, then downward facing dog is probably a

staple posture in your practice; but as a yoga teacher for over
a decade, I have discovered that not all down dogs are created
equal. Many, in all actuality, are simply too restricted in the upper
body (shoulder girdle) to safely and properly practice this mighty
pose, and for those of us whom are not so stiff, we are so looseygoosey that we lack the true stability to hold ourselves properly
in down dog. Several years ago in a training with Gary Kraftsow
(creator of Viniyoga Therapy), he stated quite bluntly, If you
never do another down dog again in your yoga practice, you will
survive just fine. He unknowingly stemmed my interest in this
mysterious pose, and I soon began my quest to understand more.

Heres the quick scoop.

Most of our daily postures, habits and routines ask us to round

our bodies forward in a kyphotic like manner, leaving many of us
locked in a very hunched position with minimal mobility in our
scapulae, which essentially allow our actual shoulders to move.
Add tight hamstrings and a lack of good core awareness, and
youve got yourself the hunchback of downward facing dog.
It is unfortunate that many repeatedly force themselves into this
posture over and over again, finding any pinhole of flexibility they
can grasp and milk it for all its worth because that is what they
think they should be feeling or doing.
So what is a teacher to do? Introduce her students to their new
best friend puppy dog. Puppy dog allows students to face head
on the true restriction in their scapulae and surrounding muscles.
In puppy dog, students are not able to sag into the under arm or
bow outward in the elbows because the detloids and adjoining
muscles are too tight to move otherwise. As for the hamstrings
and rounded lower back, its now time to calm the ego and learn
that bending your knees is actually a better option for both the
hamstrings and lower back muscles, plus it will take the stress out
of the shoulders (in down dog too).

Heres how:

1. Grab a yoga block and turn it to look like a rectangle on the

floor in front of you. Frame the block with your entire hand on
each side, palms facing inward toward the block.
2. Step back into forearm plank and find pelvic neutral, drawing
actively on your pelvic-core (bathroom muscles + deep core
muscles). Be mindful not to sag in the belly or push the booty
to the sky.
3. With a broad upper back and a long neck, press evenly through
the forearms from your elbow to the pinky finger.
4. Exhale deeply and float the hips up and back as you take a
small step in hinging the body into a triangle like position.
5. Continue to press evenly through the forearms and inward
on the block as you imagine you are ready to kick up into a
forearm balance (basically push away from the floor, not to
collapse into the upper body).
6. If you notice the back very rounded, bend the knees to help
gain length in the spine again, even if the knees are bent, you
can still press the heels and get a nice calf stretch.
7. Finally, where the body is hinged (the hip fold), deeply
contract the belly and pelvic floor muscles, imagine they are
drawing you back toward the wall. Your shoulders should not
have to do all the work; utilize your core for that.
8. Work five to ten breaths and then release to sit on the heels.
9. Incorporating puppy dog may take some getting used to, but
the long term benefit for your practice, shoulder health and
progression to other poses will be priceless.

Fibromyalgia and
chiropractic
care

By Dr. Heather King, DC and Sonja Hintz, RN

any fibromyalgia patients suffer from persistent backaches, neck pain, headaches, leg cramps, leg and foot
pain. Chiropractic care can help reduce, and even in
some cases alleviate, persistent symptoms. In a 2006 study of 20
female patients with fibromyalgia that suffered from high pain
levels, sleep disturbances and reduced activities of daily living
were treated with ultrasound and chiropractic adjustments for up
to 20 sessions. The conclusions showed that the symptoms felt by
the patients were dramatically reduced. Chiropractic treatment
can help assist with many symptoms that patients with fibromyalgia are feeling. Improving function not only through adjustments
but also by incorporating therapies such as ultrasound, exercise
and massage to their treatment program. These patients are being
helped to live their lives to the fullest potential. When treating
fibromyalgia, the goal is to improve quality of life and help reduce
the overall effect on the body.
Chiropractic is a natural approach to treating the body through
the use of spinal adjustments to remove fixations of joints. Chiropractors adjust the spinal column, but misalignments can occur
throughout the body, which can affect the nerves, muscles and
organs. By adjusting the fixations and removing nerve interference,
the goal is to reduce the pain, inflammation and muscle spasms to
allow the body to function as optimally as possible. There is no
known cure for fibromyalgia, but there are treatments available
that can help improve symptoms and quality of life. Chiropractic
can be used in conjunction with other forms of treatment.
Nutritional supplementation can assist in the treatment of many
of the painful symptoms of fibromyalgia. The nutrient methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a naturally occurring sulfur compound
found in humans that inhibits pain impulses due to anti-inflammatory properties. This is a supplement that can be added to assist
in decreasing the impacts of pain by reducing inflammation. Its
widely used as a supplement for arthritic conditions and pain.
Sulfur is needed for proper cellular function. People who might
want to consider using supplemental sulfur sources such as MSM
include those who have chronic inflammatory conditions like
fibromyalgia and arthritis.

Do you
desire
prosperity?

By Dan Conlon

The starting point of all achievement is DESIRE. Keep this

constantly in mind. Weak desire brings weak results, just as a small
fire makes a small amount of heat.
A BURNING DESIRE TO BE, AND TO DO is the starting point
from which the dreamer must take off.

Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill

ost of us want to live a life that is deeply satisfying;

where it is common to do the things we desire without
concern for the time or the money it might require. A
desire for a prosperous life lies within us. I consider this a universal truth of humanity. We may each define our vision of prosperity
differently, of course, but it is part of the human condition to seek
greater fulfillment and progress.
All of us possess an inner drive to live a life where we enjoy
abundance, freedom and self-reliance. Our collective history is
one of an ever-advancing society and culture. Desire is the starting point for this journey to prosperity.

Desire is deep yearning, the

fire of passion and becoming
energized for achievement
that stimulates the release
of our human potential.
There is a difference between wanting something and developing a white-hot burning desire for the attainment of that dream.
Desire is deep yearning, the fire of passion and becoming energized
for achievement that stimulates the release of our human potential.
This level of desire is one of the most potent powers in the
universe for creating results. This powerful force to create what
our heart desires is right there within us, waiting to be summoned.
Consider the meaning of this quote from Think and Grow Rich:
The oak sleeps in the acorn. The bird waits in the egg, and in the
highest vision of the soul, a waking angel stirs. DREAMS ARE THE
SEEDLINGS OF REALITY.
Movement toward our desired level of prosperity starts with our
thoughts. Our thinking influences every condition in our lives;
change your thoughts and change your experience, change your
experiences and change your life. You may be asking yourself: If it
is just this easy, why is it that most people do not enjoy a greater
success and wealth? Great question. There are conditions that hold
us back from reaching our full economic and personal potential:
www.naturespathways.com

1. It simply doesnt enter our consciousness that it is possible

to become wealthy. We think success is for someone else,

another class of people. Perhaps no one in our family or center
of influence has ever reached financial success; so there are no
role models to follow.
2. A clear decision to achieve wealth is never made. Consequently, the desire for attainment is weak and any attempts
to figure it out or find someone who is successful and ask her
how she did it lacks conviction.
3. Our habits hold us back. Habits of thought and behavior
interfere with progress. We need to overcome procrastination,
resistance to change and fear of failure.
As we fuel our desires into a white-hot burning blaze, we find
the energy, stamina and courage to act. As we act, we develop the
habits of delayed gratification and self-discipline. We willingly
choose to pay the price of achieving success and begin to experience more confidence, self-reliance and prosperity.

Try a new income vehicle

If you are like 95 percent of the U.S. population, you have a job with a
clearly defined job description and a defined/limited level of earnings
potential. According to the American Community Survey Census,
the median household income in the United States was $51,371 in
2012, the latest data available. You have two choices: Decrease your
living expense to a small percentage of your income or grow your
income. If your definition of prosperity is $100,000 per year, you
will need a new income vehicle. A job will simply not provide the
required advancement to reach your goal. Consider a home-based
business. It can provide the vehicle you need for this advancement.
In 1988, I started a part-time home-based business that I still
have today. My goal was to earn $52,000 per year within two years,
a little more than my $30,000-per-year job. I met this two-year
goal within six months. Within two years, I was earning more
than $30,000 per month. This experience is not uncommon in
home-based business. A home-based business can be that new
income vehicle that changes things for you too. I share this with
you to impress upon you the importance of good decisions and
the power of desire a white-hot burning desire.
DESIRE backed by FAITH, pushed reason aside, and inspired me
to carry on.
If you are looking for prosperity, Hills Think and Grow Rich has
influenced millions around the world. Use the principles outlined
in this book. The formula works.

Virgo
Perfect
imperfection
Dates: Aug. 22Sept. 21
Ruled by: Mercury
Element: Earth

By Barry Kerr

Though true for everyone, the following

information will feel more relevant to you
if your sun, North Node, Chiron and/or a
group of other planets are in Virgo on your
birth chart.

What is Virgos intention?

In the grand scheme of things, what we

are doing here, as spirits in human form, is
learning how to be conscious co-creators
in this time/space
dimension we call the
physical world. This
requires that we pay
attention to how this
world works, practically, on every level.
Hello, Virgo!
It is the Virgo in us
all that focuses attention on the details in
our experience. Virgos spiritual intention
is to get it right, to create life to the highest
order of potential. Thus, when we are in
our Virgo self, we might be fussy, particular and critical, as we are sensitive to everything that falls short of wholeness and
perfection. The world is giving us feedback
so we can improve our selves, our lives and
serve others by improving theirs.
In this process, our Mercury minds take

in and analyze a cascade

of information about how
everything around us and inside
of us works or doesnt work. In affect,
Virgo is our inner scientist, applying logic
and coolheaded reasoning to our experiences and our relationships. When we do
this well, we arrange our daily habits and
lifestyles in earthy ways that maintain our
health and wholeness, that ground us to

disconnected and/or impure. Something

is wrong physically, emotionally, mentally
or spiritually and we need to fix or get
rid of it. This can be experienced as physical illness, hyper-anxiety, over-analysis,
obsessive worry, obsession with details,
faultfinding, perfectionism,
being
right and inflexibility. There is a nagging
sense of dissatisfaction that longs for
wholeness and order.
To heal our Virgo
selves, we need to
learn to appreciate that though this
world appears to our logical minds to be
chaotic, fragmented and disconnected
from order and spirit, it is actually always
in perfect spiritual balance and harmony;
and so are we. With this polar perspective (Pisces/Neptune), we can accept, love
and serve ourselves, others, and the world
as they are, appreciating that we are each
on a unique journey back to conscious
wholeness as co-creators. Our job is to pay

Virgos spiritual intention is to

highest order of potential.

the practical boundaries of life, and find

useful service. When we do this poorly, we
cut off feelings, suffer illnesses, create work
and relationship problems, and/or lose
spiritual perspective and connection.

What needs healing and

growth?

The wounded Virgo in each of us feels

incomplete,
scattered,
fragmented,

attention and learn to co-create with more

wisdom, faith, mastery and love.

What can I do this month?

To heal and evolve your Virgo self, pay

attention to how you participate with
others. Do you act on your feelings of
compassion? Serve others effectively?
Or just judge and criticize? How much
does your mind analyze and categorize,
and notice details, trying to make order
out of disorder? This is what our mind is
designed to do, but it needs balance with
our heart and intuition.
Is your mind helping you create healthy
routines, or causing obsessive and harmful
habits? Or do you rebel against routines
and order because you are disappointed
with the world? Are you living primarily
in your head, a mental cloud of disconnect
from feelings, or are you grounding into
your body and to the earth, feeling your
feelings, and taking care of yourself?

Additional support (current

planetary transits)

During September 2014, Venus is also in

Virgo while Mercury is in Libra. Venus,
planet of relationships, and Libra, sign of
relationships, are inviting and supporting
you to apply your super observant Virgo/
Mercury mind toward how you create and
experience your primary relationships. What
do you notice? How do you give and receive
feedback from the people in your life?
On Sept. 8, the Pisces full Moon (opposite Virgo) merges with Chiron, planet
of healing. Grab a partner and give your
busy Virgo minds a meditative rest by
listening to inspiring music and breathing
in the divine, unconditional love available
through your oceanic hearts, invoking
compassion and gratitude for the perfect
imperfection of being human.

You can get

your omega-3s
every
day!

By Terry Lemerond

e all need omega-3s for a healthy heart and sharp

mind, but getting them into the diet can be tough.
If you dont eat a lot of fish or have found it difficult
to keep up with your omega-3 supplementation, youre really
missing out on some amazing benefits.
Fortunately, there is another, more convenient way to get your
omega-3s plus other valuable nutrients: from salmon. It uses a
revolutionary process called vectorization to provide the DHA,
EPA, phospholipids and peptides youve been missing in just one
tablet per day.
Vectorization uses enzymes and water, rather than solvents or
heat, to extract omega-3s from the head of the fish. This is preferable to omega-3s extracted from the fat of the fish, where polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are typically concentrated. This process
also retains a natural ratio of DHA and EPA.
Vectorization immediately following the catch allows the
omega-3s to remain bound to phospholipids, making them easier
for the body to absorb and use. They are also incredibly stable, so
with this particular supplemental form you dont have to worry
about rancidity or fish burps, a common occurrence with triglyceride-bound oils. The DHA and EPA structure is exactly the way
they exist in nature because the processing is so minimal. Since
these omega-3s remain in their original positions on the carbon
chain (sn-2), they are bioidentical that is, a perfect match to
the positioning of omega-3 fatty acids in the human brain.
The revolutionary method also leaves valuable phospholipids
intact. Phospholipids make the supplement a more stable source
of omega-3s, (up to three years at room temperature) so you dont
have to worry about rancidity or fish burps. And, because phospholipids are fats that contain phosphorus, they provide a variety
of health benefits, including:
20

Natures Pathways | September 2014

PHOSPHATIDYLCHOLINE (PC) protects the engine of your

cells the mitochondria from oxidative damage.

PHOSPHATIDYLETHANOLAMINE (PE) helps build the myelin

sheath around nerve cells to keep nerve signals firing properly.

PHOSPHATIDYLINOSITOL (PL) plays a major role in nerve

and brain signals, helping to keep your brain healthy and your
mood positive.
SPHINGOMYELIN (SPH) is a strong supporter of overall brain

health.

PHOSPHATIDYLSERINE is one of the most widespread phos-

pholipids, often recommended as a stand-alone supplement for

broad-spectrum brain health.

Along with omega-3s and phospholipids, vectorization provides

another benefit peptides. Formed from amino acids, peptides
are activated during the digestive process, and can boost your
mood and protect your heart.
Without a doubt, omega-3 fatty acids have shown remarkable
benefits. Essential fatty acids (EFAs) hold cells together and protect
them against invaders. EPA and DHA from fish oil improve heart
health and blood profiles, relieve pain through anti-inflammatory
action, enhance immunity, elevate mood, alleviate the symptoms
of ADHD and menstrual pain, promote brain and vision development in infants and children, and help treat depression.
www.naturespathways.com

So getting omega-3s is truly essential. But its time to rethink

the delivery of these nutrients so that everyone can actually get
these nutrients easily every day. If youve been inconsistent with
your omega-3s, this vectorized, phospholipid-bound form is
worth looking into for the sake of your good health.

[Labor Day] is a celebration of the American labor movement and is dedicated to

the social and economic achievements of
workers. It constitutes a yearly national
tribute to the contributions workers have
made to the strength, prosperity, and wellbeing of their country. President Grover Cleveland signed the celebration of the day as a
national holiday six days after the end of the
Pullman Strike where a number of workers
died at the hands of the U.S. military and
U.S. Marshals. Most Americans also hail the
day as an end to summer.
September also is often the beginning of
the academic school year and in many
businesses and corporations it is often the
beginning of their fiscal year or the last
quarter/end of it.
What we call the beginning is often the end.
And to make an end is to make a beginning.
The end is where we start from. T.S. Eliot
Wow! This sounds an awful lot like the
cycle of life one that infinitely births
itself from its own death.
Just recently I was talking with one of my
teen clients. I told her that I admired a ring she
was wearing. She excitingly spoke about its
shape and meaning. She said it meant infinity
and went on to explain, There are a series of

seven books about fictitious characters named

Dak Smyth and Sera Froste who use the infinity ring as a device for time travel. While doing
so, they take deliberate action to try and help
the fate of humankind. That fate includes
economic systems, government, the environment and quality of life for people.
What is fascinating about this story is that
so many of my teen clients have such great
insight into games and stories depicting the
creation of a better world and the myriad
systems that run it. Many games allow
teens to use their critical thinking skills and
imagination. Despite their creative ideas,
most of these teens are souls that have
shut themselves off to reality because they
see repeating patterns within the status
quo that also appears to be cyclical. They
see how different things could change for
the better, but they get frustrated on how
to effectively utilize their skills because
they feel they are caught in an unbearably
rigid conformity that turns them to media,
games and other imaginative play.
To be yourself in a world that is constantly
trying to make you something else is the
greatest accomplishment.

Ralph Waldo Emerson
Remember when we saw things differently
as youths? We wanted to be authentic and
www.naturespathways.com

expressed our ideas on how we could change

the world for the better. What I see today
is that our kids need to think, feel and act
differently in order to separate them from
what others consider to be normal. I also
see that many of our youth need empathetic
support and hands-on guidance in order
for them to truly utilize the gifts theyve
been given. In order to foster this kind of
support, we the adults must transform our
traditional ways of thinking.
Our kids have such potential to not
only become self-sufficient in society, but
to also use their different approaches to
solving problems in every aspect of their
complex lives. We have the opportunity to
model, inspire, educate and motivate our
youth to bring about miraculous change
and transformation despite the many
broken systems found within our society.
You can never solve a problem on the level

What steps can we follow in order to bring
about positive change in young people today?
1. We need to take the time to explore
and uncover our own unique gifts
talents and life purpose the mission
within our lives.
2. We can learn ways to take deliberate
steps to support young people and
their out-of-the-box creativity.
3. We need to get used to taking risks and
embrace change openly. This requires
us to face difficult emotions, including avoidance. Facing our emotions
can give way to perceived inadequacies that merely need to be illuminated
so that we can transform and move
through them.
Once we have taken those steps, we can
get back to our roots: as creative beings
with individualized gifts to use and establish new paradigms instead of outdated
systems that no longer serve humanity or
our world.

Supplements:
Do they help
with blood
sugar
control?

By Rosalie Misco

f you have blood sugar issues, it is not because of a shortage of nutrients that can be replaced with a supplement. It is
the result of a diet way too high in fast digesting, processed
carbohydrates like sugar and starch. The only way to lower your
blood sugar is with a balanced diet of whole unprocessed foods
that are sugar free and low in fast digesting starch. Exercise or
activity is also very important. There is no other solution or quick
fix. It is that simple.
Television infomercials by doctors who promise blood sugar
control that includes supplements are simply lies to make money.
Is the CHIP program (Coronary Health Improvement Project)
the answer to blood sugar control? It is backed by some doctors,
and claims that fat in the diet is the cause of blood sugar issues.
It promotes a very low fat diet that is close to a vegetarian lifestyle. The fat, and protein that comes with it, like eggs and meat,
do not raise blood sugar. When you remove the fat and animal

protein from your diet, you increase the carbohydrate content.

Carbohydrates except fiber (also a carbohydrate) raise blood
sugar. All foods fits into one of these three categories: fat, protein
or carbohydrates. If you remove the fat and protein, you are left
with increasing carbohydrates to replace the fat and protein.
Resistant starch fiber is both a starch and a fiber. It is called
resistant because it resists digestion until it is in the large intestine where it feeds the good bacteria that makes up your immune
system. It is a naturally occurring component of some whole
foods. Resistant starch fiber combined with other carbohydrates
prevents blood sugar spikes. Hi-maize 260 is a resistant starch
fiber that can be added to foods.

Heading back
to school
impacts our
pets
as well!

By Kathleen Folz

he kids have been home for the summer and even with
vacations, sports and other activities, your dogs and cats
have gotten used to having the family around the house
a bit more. With school back in session, dont forget the new fall
schedule should consider your pets too!
Dogs, cats and other pets can be very sensitive to the slightest
changes in work and school schedules. They are often creatures of
habit just as we are and can become anxious at the slightest change.
Anxiety can manifest as behavior problems such as chewing or
inappropriate toileting. Stress-related health issues including sores
and recurring infections can also be a result of anxiety.
We help our children prepare for the new school year. Include
the kids and the pets in the new routine with these helpful tips.
Change meal times and potty times for the dog gradually if
possible. If the new morning schedule requires earlier feeding,
start close to your current schedule and move toward the desired
time a little each day.
A scheduled play time or walk in the morning before school
and work helps your dog settle in for a quiet day at home. Tossing
a ball in the back yard or setting out a treat-filled puzzle toy exercises the mind and the body.
Cats can benefit too! We sometimes forget that cats like interactive play. Enjoy a few minutes of chase with a toy on a stick. Keep
catnip-filled toys in a sealed container with dried catnip. Switch the
toys daily, putting out refreshed toys and putting the used toys into
the container to refresh them for the next day. Cats may like puzzle
toys too! Put freeze dried meat treats in a hollow ball or cat-sized
interactive toy. Let your cat figure out how to get the tasty treat!
Consider hiring a pet sitter or taking your dog to doggie day care
if there will be long stretches where your pets will be on their own.
If your dog or cat is showing signs of separation anxiety, work
with a positive trainer, holistic/integrative veterinarian and your

products and ways to help lessen the anxiety. These products

include, pheromones, essential oils, Western and Chinese herbs,
music and interactive toys to name a few.
Remember that your pets and kids benefit from each other. At
the end of the school day, kids and pets can wind down together
with walks, playing and petting time. Your dog or cat can be a
patient ear as your child reads or studies for a test. Our pets give
us unconditional acceptance the year round. Keep their needs in
mind at this fun and busy time of year!

ine
with osteopathic medic
By Rebecca Bentz

n todays world of high-tech medicine, it is a deceptively simple technique that sometimes has the biggest
impact on a persons health and well-being: touch.
Dr. Tracy Bretl understands the power held within the
hands of those who possess both the training and desire to heal
others individuals like herself. As a doctor of osteopathic medicine (D.O.), Bretl uses her hands to diagnose illness and injury,
and to encourage the body to heal itself.
The body wants to be normal. The brain and the tissues know
what to do, Dr. Bretl explains. But sometimes, trauma, repetitive injuries or other incidents disrupt proper functioning of
the bodys systems. The goal of osteopathic manipulation is to
reteach the body what normal is.

Is osteopathic medicine for you?

Our nation is ready for a change. When seeking health care,

patients dont want to be just a number or the sum of their
illnesses and conditions; they want to be seen as individuals.
Doctors of osteopathy take a whole-person approach to health
care, according to the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
Instead of focusing on specific conditions as they occur, Dr. Bretl
and her similarly trained peers concentrate on treating their
patients as a whole.
D.O.s are fully able to prescribe medication or refer
individuals to specialists, Dr. Bretl explains. This is
because they generally undergo the same training and
licensing as a doctor of medicine
(M.D.). A doctor of osteopathy
attends medical school and graduates through internship, residency
and fellowship programs. D.O.s
can also specialize in areas of medicine, including primary care, pediatrics, oncology and more.
Dr. Bretl specializes and is board-certified in neuromusculoskeletal, osteopathic
manipulative and family practice medicine. She focuses on cranial osteopathy,
a specific type of osteopathic treatment

that takes into account the motion of the bones in the head and the
sacrum, the brain and the spinal cord along with the membranes
that cover them, and the movement of the spinal fluid and uses
subtle manipulation to encourage the body to release stresses. She
combines this with myofascial release, a therapy that works with soft
tissue like muscles or connective tissue to address flexibility,
function or pain problems throughout the body.
If youre unfamiliar with these disciplines, such terms might
be alarming at first. But Bretl explains that this technique
involves only gentle and subtle pressure, and treatment can be
used on all types of individuals: from the very young to the elderly,
from physically fit individuals to those living with a disability or
chronic condition.
Its such a gentle technique, people wonder if Im doing
anything, Bretl jokes.
The reason her care is so gentle is owed in part to the fact that
shes encouraging, not forcing, the body back to its normal state. The
patients body does the work; [I am] just facilitating that process.
How does such a gentle touch yield such beneficial results?
Manchester, England-based Soothe, a primarily osteopathic
clinic, explains the underlying idea of cranial osteopathic care:
Cranial Osteopaths are trained to feel a very subtle, rhythmical
shape change that is present in all body tissues. This is called involuntary motion. The skull is made up of 26 bones which are intricately
joined in such a way that during the rhythmical cycle of involuntary
motion, the skull can actually change shape very slightly to accommodate the normal involuntary motion of the brain inside.

Impact to the head can block or disrupt this movement. This can cause a wide
variety of problems both in the head and in other areas of the body. Using involuntary motion in the tissues, Osteopaths can feel whether a person is in an optimum
state of health, or whether there is something preventing healthy movement of the
tissues from occurring.

Sometimes your dreams come to you

How does a person get into osteopathy? For Dr. Bretl, the field found her.
Dr. Bretl knew at a young age she wanted to go into the medical field,
but the inspiration and skills that would make it possible came from two
of the most important people in her life: her parents. It turns out that
healing hands run in the family; Bretls father was always mechanically
inclined and passed his love of working with his hands down to his daughter. Her mother, a counselor aide, provided the inspiration to heal others.
My mother was a very compassionate person; she was also the nicest
person I ever knew as well. I strive to be as compassionate as she was,
Bretl says. She keeps a gift from her mother, a blue bird figurine, to
remind her of her mothers compassion.
It wasnt until after Dr. Bretl decided she wanted to go back to school,
though, that she would discover osteopathic medicine nearly by chance.
She had taken her pre-med courses and applied to M.D. school. She got
the interview, but not a spot in the medical school. She was considering
her options perhaps shed go into engineering when she got a new
job as a medical technologist at a clinic. Little did she know, all the doctors
who practiced there were D.O.s.
While talking with the clinics nurse practitioner, who happened to be
the wife of one of the doctors, Bretl mentioned that she was interested
in attending medical school, but hadnt got in. The very next day, the
nurse practitioners husband, one of the owners of the clinic and a board
member of Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine and
Surgery, asked if it was true that Bretl wanted to go to medical school. She
said yes and soon had an application in her hand.
Yet, even though she was on the path to becoming a doctor, she still had
some things to learn.
I had no idea what osteopathic manipulation was, Dr. Bretl says, but
they teach it to you the minute you walk in the door at medical school.
That early immersion means Bretl and other D.O.s are comfortable
working directly with patients and touching them a key to the success
of any doctor of osteopathy. The power of touch is very great, Bretl
acknowledges.
It wasnt until her second year of medical school when she had the
opportunity to take a cranial osteopathy course that Bretl realized this was
exactly what she wanted to do in life.
Bretl completed an internship at Portsmouth Naval Hospital following
graduation from medical school and after that, served two years in the
Navy as general medical officer aboard the USS Emory S. Land.
After I was in the Navy, I definitely wanted to come home, which is
Wisconsin, and set up practice doing osteopathic manipulation. The Port
Washington-native did just that and has been making a difference in the
lives of her patients for the past 22 years.

of new medical knowledge so that she is able to spot things that arent
musculoskeletal in nature.
Additional study of this sort might have saved the life of one patient
in particular.
The patient was complaining of shin splints. But when Dr. Bretl delved
into the history of the problem, she discovered that cancer could actually
be the culprit of the individuals pain. Her hunch was confirmed. Luckily,
her patient received treatment and fully recovered.
This has helped her not only provide care and comfort, but also change
patients lives.
For patients with fibromyalgia, for example, Dr. Bretl is able to provide
relief from chronic pain associated with the condition. One patient visited
Dr. Bretl in hopes that her treatments would reduce the pain enough that
the woman could have another child. Another patient, disabled because of
her fibromyalgia pain, wished to return to work. The first patient is again
a proud mother and the second is working full time.
What makes Dr. Bretls practice unlike any other is her ability to take
an individualized approach to her patients.
Its the paradox of medicine: While people are a lot alike the human
body kind of works the same way for everybody everyone is totally
unique. You come to an appreciation of the wonder of the human body
and its amazing that it works as well as it does but you also just
appreciate everyones uniqueness.

Historically, red clover has been used for cancer and respiratory problems, such as whooping cough, asthma and bronchitis.
Currently, red clover is used as a traditional or folk remedy for menopausal symptoms, breast pain associated with menstrual cycles, high
cholesterol, osteoporosis and symptoms of prostate enlargement.
The flowering tops of the red clover plant are used to prepare
extracts available in tablets and capsules, as well as in teas and
liquid forms.

Several small studies of red clover for menopausal symptoms had

mixed results; however, most of these studies had design flaws.
A large clinical trial and several reviews of the research literature
concluded that red clover had no significant beneficial effects on
menopausal symptoms.
There is not enough scientific evidence to determine whether
red clover is effective for any other health conditions.
The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) is studying red clover to learn more about its active

components and how they might work in the body, including how
red clover isoflavones may affect human prostate cells and the safety
and effectiveness of red clover for menopausal symptoms.

Side effects and cautions

Red clover seems to be safe for most adults when used for short
periods of time. No serious adverse effects have been reported.
Because red clover contains estrogen-like compounds, there
is a possibility that its long-term use would increase the risk of
women developing cancer of the lining of the uterus. However,
studies to date have been too brief (less than six months) to evaluate whether red clover has estrogen-like effects on the uterus.
It is unclear whether red clover is safe for women who are
pregnant or breastfeeding, or who have breast cancer or other
hormone-sensitive cancers.
Tell all your health care providers about any complementary
health practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do
to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe
care. For tips about talking with your health care providers about
complementary and alternative medicine, see NCCAMs Time to
Talk campaign.

Breathe easier
with
massage

By Rob Reader

lot of people are allergic to pollen and mold. Even those

that dont actually have an allergy to them still sometimes
have trouble breathing on days when the pollen and mold
spore counts are high. This usually occurs after a good rain. The
plants get a chance to flower, and standing water allows mold to
breed in dark places. Inhaling these allergens is unavoidable even
inside a well sealed house. While massage has not been shown to
help with allergies or sensitivities, it can help a great deal with the
symptoms. When your chest feels heavy or tight, or when it seems
you are struggling to breathe, the muscles you use to breathe are
most likely tightening up. The ribs dont move as well and now the
neck muscles have to work extra hard to get the ribcage to expand
and contract. Those muscles are called scalenes, and most of them
are attached to the first rib just underneath the collarbone. When
your breathing is strained, these muscles pull up on your first rib
in order to move the rest of the rib cage upward. This is not an
action that the scalenes want to do for very long. They are pretty
small and strain fairly easily, so your neck starts hurting as well.
A well trained massage therapist will know what muscles to
address when you are in distress with your breathing. Usually some
work just under the ribs into the diaphragm, and this alleviates some
of the distress. Getting fingers in between the ribs and working the
muscles there will help loosen the chest. Yes, its sometimes ticklish
and has to be done with care so as not to cause more discomfort,
but it is well worth the time and effort it takes to do it right. Also
working up near the collarbone and pectoral muscles will open the
area up and take some of the work load off of those scalenes.
Usually you dont want to be put face down when you are having
trouble breathing. The extra pressure on the chest will have a very
negative effect on your ability to breathe. If your massage therapist chooses to have you turn over, please keep him informed of
your inability to breathe easily. Remember that as a client you are
in control of your massage and the massage therapist cannot do
anything that you dont agree or are comfortable with. But there
are certain points on the back that can loosen up the chest and
ease breathing. These are usually located between the shoulder
blades in the mid to upper back. If you are too uncomfortable to
turn over, then these muscles can be addressed while you are face
www.naturespathways.com

up by the massage therapist putting his hands underneath your

back and using upward traction to relax the muscles.
In my experience, massage has greatly helped clients who come
in looking a little gray and struggling to breathe. They leave able
to stand upright and take deep breaths again with very little to no
discomfort. Like I said before, massage is not helping with your
actual allergies, but helping with the symptoms. If you are having
trouble with breathing, you may be very surprised to find out how
much one massage can help improve your breathing.
So when you feel the wheezing and heaviness in the chest
coming on, give a call to your local independent massage therapist
and make an appointment right away. You will leave with a smile
after a deep, well-deserved sigh of relief.

Boost your
immune
health with
chiropractic

By Dr. Pat McCann, D.C.

nother school year is here and the kids have gone back to
school with a whole list of new school supplies. As parents,
we do our best to make sure they have everything they
need to have a great year. What about a strong immune system?
A new school year can often mean sick days as kids start coming
down with coughs, colds, flus and fevers during this time of the
year. Why is that? Why do some kids catch it and others not? The
main reason is because their immune system is not strong enough
to fight off whatever bacteria or virus is has come into contact with.
You want to keep your family strong and healthy. So what if I told
you there is a way to optimize your families immune system naturally?
One great way is through chiropractic care. Chiropractic care
works with the nervous system (brain and spine) to make sure
your body is functioning to the best of its ability. The nervous
system controls the function of every cell, tissue and organ in the
body. The nervous system acts as a conductor by controlling and

coordinating all systems of the body the cardiovascular, digestive, endocrine and also the immune system!
Chiropractors improve our immune system by removing
spinal misalignments called subluxations that when present
decrease our bodys ability to function, heal and regulate. Subluxation decreases our immune response and thus puts our bodies at
risk of more sickness and disease. By correcting subluxations in
the spine, we are making sure our nervous system and immune
system are optimized so we can stay healthy and fend off bad
intruders into the body.
Ronald Pero, Ph.D., chief of cancer prevention research at New
Yorks Preventive Medicine Institute and professor of medicine
at New York University, performed one of the most important
studies showing the positive effect chiropractic care can have on
the immune system and general health. Dr. Pero measured the

to those in the general population, and those with cancer and

other serious diseases.
In his initial three-year study of 107 individuals who had been
under chiropractic care for five years or more, the chiropractic
patients were found to have a 200 percent greater immune competence than people who had not received chiropractic care, and 400
percent greater immune competence than people with cancer and
other serious diseases.
The immune system superiority of those under chiropractic
care did not diminish with age. Dr. Pero stated, When applied
in a clinical framework, I have never seen a group other than this
chiropractic group to experience a 200% increase over the normal
patients. This is why it is so dramatically important. We have
never seen such a positive improvement in a group
How do you know if you have subluxations affecting the
nervous system and immune system? With state-of-the-art technology called the subluxation station, chiropractors can objectively measure your nervous system function. If coughs, colds,
flu and fever get the best of you each year, its time to give your
immune system a boost with chiropractic!

Play and
flow

By Kathy Clegg

was invited to play at the Bette Brinn Museum last week.

Having left the school system a few years ago, and with my
children grown-up (definition to be determined), it was an
experience with which I was unfamiliar. What I did know was it was
about play, and who knows best about play? Children, of course!
What I saw was engagement in life in a pretend world of exploration of experiences! It was a smaller, simulated model of this world we
experience, yet it looked very different observing the childrens interactions in it. Their enthusiasm was the most noticeable difference!
Most were in flow, maneuvering from one playground to the
next; from building blocks to dramatic stages, jungle gyms, parks,
work environments and more. They perfectly modeled the roles
theyve seen played out by adults in their first years of life. In the
museums simulated work environments, I saw children acting as
typical managers, frustrated with people who did not put things
back in their rightful places on shelves; I saw automotive teams
change tires with proficiency and expertise; a bus driver warned
for exceeding the speed limit; a mail clerk told she needed to
be in uniform; and a deli order flawlessly taken by phone for a
corporation. To my delight, the one constant was how the children handled the money issue. Not one register clerk charged
for their service. At the auto shop, I was told I didnt need to pay
until tomorrow; at the bakery they had all free samples; and at
the grocery checkout they announced everything was free today.
What a wonderful world this would be! New rules to this game of
life we play by the children of tomorrow. I love their vision! No
stress, no anxiety just flow with enthusiasm and play! (Note to
health workers: there was not one holistic practitioner, psychic,
card reader, hand analyst, life coach. Hmmm!)
How can we move into this kind of flow in the world that we
live in? These children were totally immersed in the present,
paying attention to what was happening in the moment, challenged to create and learning to enjoy their experience however
it showed up without personalizing it as right or wrong. They
were purely playing with the universe!
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, psychology professor and author of many
books, is noted for his work in the study of happiness and creativity,

but is best known as the architect of the notion of flow. He defines flow
as a state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing
else seems to matter; the experience is so enjoyable that people will
continue to do it even at great cost, for the sheer sake of doing it.
That, I believe is the new paradigm of play! What does that look
like, sound like, feel like?
I recently held a Happy Ever After Fairy Tale Retreat that was
set up to move in flow. We were all willing to let go of doing it
in the old energy of mind: agenda, time schedules, set planned
activities and all that is advised for doing it right. Instead, we
created a safe and sacred space of allowing and living in the now
moment feeling into our hearts to discover the next action and
response. Just like the children at the museum, it became an experience of timelessness, clarity, deep knowing into ourselves, joy
and the wonder of becoming.
So how do we keep this flow experience going as we navigate
through our playgrounds of life?
Csikszentmihalyi points to five ways to cultivate ones self into an
autotelic person (one in which a person performs acts because they
are intrinsically rewarding, rather than to achieve external goals):
Setting intensions that have clear and immediate feedback
Becoming immersed in the particular activity
Paying attention to what is happening in the moment
Learning to enjoy immediate experience
Proportioning ones skills to the challenge at hand
The new paradigm asks us to experience play and flow differently.
No wonder we want more fulfilling work, more satisfying relationships, and a shift in our entertainment. Finding our flow through
our own individual play will lead us to our joy. Happy playing!

Men, grief
and feelings
Part 2

By Robert Matuszak

The feelings of grief

When my wife died of breast cancer, those initial moments were

filled with shock and numbness, with a dose of disbelief. I knew
she would eventually die, but now? Yet when it happened, I found
that nothing could have prepared me for the event. A part of me
believed she was coming back home. But it wasnt here on earth, it
was her spiritual home above.
Then the reality hit me: my wife had died. When I went to the
hospital that morning to identify her body, I went into her room
alone, sat on the bed, leaned over and held her. Then the tears
came forth. I cried for several minutes. I touched and expressed
my sadness and hurt. I did that alone at the mortuary a couple
of times prior to the funeral because I knew I couldnt suppress
my pain, hurt and sadness. It had to come out and it did enormously. Never had I cried like that before.
Those private visits helped me to do the funeral preparations awaiting me so I wouldnt have an emotional meltdown in public. Seeing
how I wept at the funeral home told me that weeping was a good
thing beforehand. Expressing my sadness allowed me to manage my
feelings. They came out when I wanted it, not bursting out uncontrolled. Managing my feelings enabled me to handle a highly stressful
situation the funeral and wake.

Expressing your feelings or not

Your spouse died. The news hits like a tidal wave. Your feelings
can become intertwined, all begging to be expressed. The shock
and horror of the experience floods your mind and heart. Questions abound about what to do next. Grief descends upon you.
So what do you do next? This varies with each person, especially
men. Some weep, others become angry, sad, numb and shocked.
Expressing or stuffing the feelings away is a decision that raises
other issues for most men, depending on how you were taught or
not taught on this subject.
Here is a quote on the subject:
When we run from our feelings, they follow us everywhere!
Feelings must be expressed. To stuff your most
Intimate feeling is to stay stuck with the feeling. From Men
www.naturespathways.com

Have Feelings Too, by Larry James, www.celebratelove.com.

When I was young, the family males in my life were typically
unemotional in expressing grief. While the women in my family
were discussing the event, many women openly wept and verbalized their feelings.
The men were the opposite: stoic, reserved and subdued were
good descriptions of the men. At the wake, the men usually
headed for the bar for a shot and a beer to handle the situation. These men were raised to project a calm, cool demeanor in
the face of grief. Rare was it for me to see a man cry until later in
adulthood. So I grew up modeling that and in realizing that wasnt
working, I had to make changes.
What did you learn growing up about grief? Maybe its time
to review the behaviors learned by the men in your life. Its never
too late to unlearn those that dont serve you in grief. Stuffing
your grief feelings because you are macho or a tough guy will
only create problems down the road. The added stress of carrying
suppressed grief will take its toll on you in a variety of ways, especially physically, as I have found when I suppressed grief.
You may not publicly express your feelings, but do allow yourself the time alone for that. You owe it to yourself to allow the
healing of grief to move through you.

Ten ways to
plan a greener
funeral

By Jonas A Zahn

lot of folks will say they dont care

what happens to their bodies after
they die, but they do care about the
health and enjoyment of those who will
survive them. How about a green funeral?
Here are 10 ways to planning a greener
funeral.
1. GIVE YOUR BUSINESS TO A
GREEN FUNERAL HOME.

Just like in our own homes, a funeral home

has unlimited opportunity to demonstrate a

commitment to the environment. Give your

patronage to a funeral home that doesnt
just offer a green burial service, but demonstrates a commitment to sustainability with
low-water toilets, low/zero volatile organic
compound (VOC) paints and finishes,
energy-efficient lighting and appliances,
carpet made from sustainable or recycled
materials, rainwater collection, window
flower boxes, composting, rain gardens, etc.
Cress Funeral Home in Madison is one
such funeral home that has taken every

opportunity in funeral home improvement

to make smart choices for the environment: www.cressfuneralservice.com.
2. DONT USE A CONCRETE BURIAL
VAULT.

The law does not require burial vaults in

Wisconsin. There are many cemeteries that
do not require them. If your plot is in a cemetery that requires a vault, there are recycled
plastic products on the market, but with
limited availability. Your funeral director can

help find answers to these questions.

Here is one source of recycled plastic
vaults: www.dukeburialvaults.com.
3. DONT USE A STEEL CASKET.

Save steel for cars and buildings, where

it will serve a long and useful life and be
recycled again and again. Wood is a renewable natural resource. Consider lowerimpact, more sustainable woods, like pine
and poplar, over more expensive hardwoods, like maple and mahogany.

4. CAREFULLY CONSIDER ALTERNATIVES TO CREMATION.

Cremation has a carbon footprint of 350

to 600 pounds of carbon dioxide and is
responsible for a significant amount of toxic
airborne pollution, including mercury pollution. Consider a natural return to your earthly
elements with a burial in a locally sourced
wooden casket with a biodegradable interior
and nontoxic wood finish. If cremation is
your preference for any number of reasons,
go with a wooden cremation casket that will
reduce the fossil fuel used by 10-20 percent.

ground must preserve the natural habitat

for both flora and fauna and prohibits
vaults and nonbiodegradables, including your choice of casket or burial shroud
and burial clothing no embalming, no
metal, no polyester.

10. PLAN YOUR FUNERAL.

7. REDUCE TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS.

Have your visitation and funeral service in

the same place, at the same time. No sense
making your family drive all over the place.
Also, carefully consider what your wishes are
for family and friends who must travel from
far away. Air travel is a big carbon polluter
and, if avoided, can save a lot of energy. Its
your funeral and if youd rather your distant
family raise a toast to you over the phone, let
them know this is how you feel.
8. AVOID CUT FLOWERS.

The cut-flower industry is rife with

conspiracy about wasteful practices that
consume water, use pesticides and herbicides, and refrigerated air freight to transport fresh-cut flowers around the planet.
Consider specifying locally sourced cut
flowers, locally grown potted flowers or
other creative alternatives.
Learn more at www.scientificamerican.
com/article/environmental-price-of-flowers.
9. PLANT A FEW TREES.

5. FORGO EMBALMING OR
USE NONFORMALDEHYDE
ALTERNATIVES.

Embalming is not required by law. The law

does requires some form of preservation,
but that can include either embalming or
refrigeration. Dry ice can be used to satisfy
refrigeration requirements during a family
viewing or service.
There are also alternatives to formeldehyde embalming fluids. Ask your funeral
director about green alternatives to
conventional embalming fluid.
6. FIND A NATURAL BURIAL
GROUND OR CONSERVATION
CEMETERY.

Wisconsin has a number of traditional

cemeteries opening up natural burial areas
and there are a few new cemeteries pursuing conservation status. The Natural Path
Sanctuary in Verona, www.naturalpathsanctuary.org, is one example of a conservation cemetery. This woodland burial

good thing. Plant trees every year and teach

your children the importance of planting
trees. Support the Arbor Day Foundation
(www.arborday.org) and ask family and
friends plant trees in your memory.

Nobody can argue that planting trees is a

If the environment is important to you, dont

leave these choices to someone else. Theres
no better way to ensure that your funeral has
minimal impact on the environment. Do
your homework, meet with a funeral director and write your funeral plan. It doesnt

to have peace of mind that your funeral will
be consistent with your values.

How John D.
Rockefeller, oil
magnate, helped
save
the whales

By Lars M. Lewander

rior to the discovery of kerosene and the invention of the

light bulb, indoor illumination was dominated by candles,
fireplaces and oil lamps. Much of the oil for those lamps
came from whales. As a result, whales were hunted around the
globe for their blubber. While in some cultures whale meat was
eaten, the mammoth mammals were pursued relentlessly to help
light homes and businesses. Whole economies grew up around
the whaling industry along the East Coast of the United States,
and Japan and Russia still continue their whaling endeavors.
Like any other natural commodity, whales were a scarce
resource. The more we needed whale oil, the more we hunted. In
simple economical terms, the supply of whale oil was becoming
scarce, while the demand for whale oil to light peoples oil lamps
had increased. As demand increased, the price of whale oil rose
accordingly, and thus became affordable only to the rich. The
world needed a less expensive alternative fuel for general lighting.
J.D. Rockefeller (1839-1937), an excellent accountant and determined entrepreneur, was able to bootstrap his business and find
appropriate partners to co-found Standard Oil in 1870. Throughout and after the Civil War, America developed an oil-fueled
economy. Rockefellers oil refineries in Cleveland, Pittsburgh and
New York, the source of most of the oil at that time, focused on
producing kerosene for homes and businesses.
As it grew, Standard Oil added its own pipelines, tank cars and
home delivery network. It kept oil prices low to deter competitors,
made its products affordable to the average household, and, to
increase market penetration, sometimes sold below cost if necessary. Rockefellers ever-growing empire also employed thousands

of workers and developed over 300 oil-based products, from tar
to paint to Vaseline petroleum jelly to chewing gum. By the end
of the 1870s, Standard was refining over 90 percent of the oil in
the U.S.
Kerosene was much less expensive than whale oil, and the new
fuel eventually brought about the demise of the American whaling
industry. Later, however, the invention and commercialization of
the light bulb in the late 1800s and early 1900s gradually began to
erode the dominance of kerosene for illumination.
In the United States today, whales are protected by the Defense
of Marine Mammals Act.
Some other interesting facts: In the early days of refining oil,
gasoline was initially seen as a dangerous and explosive byproduct of creating diesel and kerosene. It was burnt and dumped.
However, innovation and ingenuity found that gasoline could be
used as a fuel in the nascent automobile industry. Today, there
www.naturespathways.com

is a substance called stranded gas that is being flared off and

wasted. New technologies are in the works to harvest this energy
but thats another story.
Thus, I would like to contend that by bringing new technologies and products to the market, Rockefeller ultimately helped
save the whales (though likely without an environmental intention). Many other inventions and technological advances are
also benefiting the environment, such as synthetic diesel fuel,
solar panels, wind-driven turbines and so much more. It can, of
course, also be argued that technology has brought about environmentally harmful products even automobiles and coalfired or nuclear power plants could be viewed as detrimental,
while admittedly impacting the quality of life for many people.
Of course, this duality could go on in both directions.
Rockefellers philanthropy is also renowned. From his very first
paycheck, Rockefeller, a devout Northern Baptist who abstained
from the use of tobacco and alcohol, tithed 10 percent of his
earnings to his church. Later, he used his vast wealth to establish schools, support public health causes, the sciences and the
arts. Modern equivalents would be Bill and Melinda Gates and
Warren Buffet, to name but a few. The importance of foundations
and charitable trusts will be addressed in a future article.

negative thinking!
Whats the best way to retrain our brain
to go from negative to positive self-talk? The
first step is to recognize that we are doing it.
Far too often, our thoughts pass through
our minds without us even being aware that
we are thinking them. Clients describe that

negative self-talk has a huge impact on our
moods.

Common types of negative

self-talk

1. All-or-nothing thinking. You think

in terms of absolute black-and-white

categories.
2. Overgeneralization.
You view
a negative event as a never-ending
pattern of defeat.
3. Mental filter. You dwell on the negatives and ignore the positives.
4. Discounting the positives. You
insist that your accomplishments and
your positive qualities dont count.
5. Jumping to conclusions:
a. Mind reading. You assume people
are reacting negatively to you when
there is no definite evidence for this.
b. Fortune telling. You arbitrarily
predict that things will turn out
badly.
3. Magnifying or minimizing. You
blow things way up out of proportion or you shrink their importance
inappropriately.
4. Emotional reasoning. You reason
from how you feel: I feel like an idiot
so I really must be one. Or, I feel

afraid to do this so I wont do it.

5. Should statements. You criticize

yourself or others with should, or

must.
6. Labeling. You identify with your shortcomings. Instead of saying I made a
mistake you say I am a loser, etc.
7. Personalization and blame. You
take responsibility for things that you
are not responsible for or blame others
for things you are.
Once we have increased our awareness and
recognize that we are thinking in one or all
of these ways, its time to begin reframing
and retraining our brain! I suggest keeping
a notebook or worksheet with the following column headings: Trigger/cue, Feelings, Negative automatic thoughts and
Rational response. The goals of the exercise are to counter each negative thought
with a more rational response. Initially you
probably wont buy the rational response,
and thats OK. The goal is to begin to see
alternatives to your negative world view.
It really helps if we have the opportunity to write down our rational responses.

Sometimes folks complain that this process

feels forced or phony. I agree, initially it
does! Eventually, the new responses will
become as automatic and natural as the
negative ones are currently. As difficult as
challenging our own self-talk may seem, it
is essential if we are to empower ourselves
to take control of our lives.
There are many things in life beyond
our control. Our self-talk is one major
thing that we have total control over!
We can choose how we perceive events,
comments, behavior, etc. If we can master
our thoughts, then we can master life.
I love this quote and think it sums up my
message: Inner peace begins the moment
you choose not to allow another person or
event to control your emotions.

Safe ways to
lose weight
in advance of
your
wedding

any couples aspire to lose weight in the months leading

up to their weddings. Few things are a bigger weightloss motivator than being on display during a wedding,
where guests will have their eyes trained on the happy couple.
Brides- and grooms-to-be often cite their impending nuptials as
a reason to shed some pounds. A Cornell University study found
70 percent of the roughly 270 engaged women interviewed for
the study said they wanted to lose weight for their weddings, with
many citing a desire to lose as much as 20 pounds. Losing this
amount of weight is feasible over a significant period of time. But
according to Samantha Heller, a registered dietitian and exercise
physiologist at New York Universitys Langone Medical Center in
New York City, many people get consumed with other wedding
details and forget about weight loss until the last minute, causing
many to resort to drastic measures to lose weight in the weeks
before walking down the aisle.
Quick fixes may result in rapid weight loss, but all too often
such measures dont work as expected and may cause unexpected
side effects. In addition, crash diets or extreme cleanses usually
will not help a person keep weight off, which leads to many people
packing on the pounds once they return from their honeymoon.
Losing weight and keeping that weight off requires that men and
women make lifestyle changes, which often include alterations to
their eating habits.
BEGIN YOUR PLAN EARLY. Make weight loss as much of a

priority as planning the wedding. Schedule a time to speak with

a physical trainer and/or dietician who can help you develop a
healthy weight loss plan. It may take several months to a year for
you to lose weight the right way. Plan accordingly so you will not
be scrambling at the last minute.
SET REASONABLE GOALS. Losing 15 to 20 pounds is entirely

possible in six months to a year, but losing that much weight in

a week is unlikely. Determine how much time you have and set
weekly or monthly goals, which can keep you on track and motivate you to lose the weight.

DONT BUY CLOTHES IN SMALLER SIZES. Some brides-to-be

order their wedding gowns in the sizes they hope to fit into come
their wedding day. This is never a good idea, as it may create undue
www.naturespathways.com

stress that can make losing weight even more difficult. Gowns are also
quite expensive. Its easier to alter a gown to make it smaller and much
more complicated (and expensive) to add fabric to increase the size.
KEEP YOUR DOCTOR INFORMED. It is always best to consult

with a doctor before starting a weight-loss regimen. Your doctor

may suggest certain strategies to facilitate weight loss. Furthermore, you may be able to stop taking certain medications that can
cause weight gain.
COMBINE CARDIOVASCULAR EXERCISE AND WEIGHT
TRAINING WHEN WORKING OUT. Cardiovascular exercise

alone will not help you lose the maximum amount of weight.
Toned muscle will continue to burn calories and rev up your
metabolism long after your workout is over. You do not need to
use heavy weights; just enough to provide resistance and force
your muscles to work a little harder.
DONT SKIP MEALS. Skipping meals or eating at irregular inter-

vals will make your body think it is starving. This slows down your
metabolism as your body works to preserve energy and retain fat,
which is counterproductive to your goal of losing weight. Eat at
regular intervals and enjoy several small, healthy meals per day.
Avoid foods that are high in fat, sodium and refined carbohydrates.
Stick to complex carbohydrates that are full of fiber and lean protein.
REMEMBER TO STAY HYDRATED. Symptoms of dehydration

can mimic those of hunger. If you start feeling hunger pangs, try
a glass of water before you munch on a snack. Your body just may
be telling you it needs more fluids.
Wedding weight loss goals are common, and couples can lose
weight safely if they avoid crash diets and begin a healthy eating
and exercise plan early on.

for this potentially deadly disease. Maintaining or adopting a healthy

lifestyle can reduce a persons risk of developing various cancers, and
colorectal cancer is no exception. The following are a few ways adults
can reduce their chance of developing colorectal cancer.
Get screened. As is the case with many cancer treatments,
colorectal cancer treatments are much more effective when cancer
is detected and treated early. Colorectal cancer screenings help
find polyps before they become cancerous. In addition, people
may not immediately associate symptoms of colorectal cancer
with the disease, instead thinking such symptoms are indicative of a less serious illness or condition. Screenings can not only
determine if those symptoms are a result of colorectal cancer but
also find colorectal cancer before such symptoms even develop.
Screenings and screening guidelines vary depending on the individual, as people with a higher than average risk for the disease
may be told to start receiving annual screenings before they turn
50, which is the age when people are told to receive such screenings regardless of their backgrounds.
Reconsider your diet. Adopting a healthier diet is another way
many men and women can reduce their risk for colorectal cancer.
Red meat is a great source of many nutrients, including protein,
iron and zinc. But studies have shown that a diet high in red meat
increases a persons risk for colorectal cancer, which may be due
to chemicals known as nitrites forming when meat is digested or
processed. In addition, the CCS notes that red meat contains higher
amounts of heme iron than white meat. Thats significant, as heme
iron has been shown to cause damage to the innermost layer of the
colon wall, which is known as the mucosa. A diet without much red
or processed meats, which are those preserved by curing, smoking
or salting, can lower ones risk for colorectal cancer.
Cut back on alcohol consumption. The International Agency
on Cancer Research notes that there is sufficient evidence linking
alcohol consumption to colorectal cancer. Men and women who
excessively consume alcohol may be at greater risk of colorectal
cancer because such consumers tend to have low levels of folic
acid in the body. Numerous studies have linked low levels of folate
to a higher risk of colorectal cancer, and one study that examined
www.naturespathways.com

the effects of folate deficiency on mice concluded that folate deficiency increased DNA damage by decreasing the expression of
two genes involved in DNA repair. When consuming alcohol,
men should stick to no more than two drinks per day while
women who are not pregnant should limit their alcohol intake to
one drink per day. Pregnant women should not consume alcohol.
Reduce exposure to heterocyclic amines and polycyclic
aromatic hydrocarbons. Meat that is barbecued, fried, broiled, or
cooked to well done can produce heterocyclic amines, or HCAs,
and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, both of which
have been found to cause changes in DNA that may increase
cancer risk. According to the National Cancer Institute, HCAs
form when amino acids, sugars and creatine react at high temperatures, such as those necessary when frying foods or grilling over
an open flame. PAHs, which also can be found in cigarette smoke
and exhaust fumes from automobiles, form when fat and juices
from meat grilled directly over an open fire drip onto the fire
and cause flames, which contain PAHs that then adhere to the
surface of the meat. To reduce exposure to HCAs and PAHs, avoid
prolonged cooking times and direct exposure of meat to an open
flame or high heat source, flip meat often, discard charred areas of
meat before eating and never use meat drippings to make gravy.
Many risk factors for colorectal cancer are beyond an individuals control, but men and women still can take steps to significantly reduce their risk of developing this deadly disease.
