The Canon Pixma IP1600 is a part of the company's successful line of Pixma printers. It retailsfor about $140 and was designed with an eye on at-home use. Canon stresses the ease of printing both photos and full color documents on it, and its small size makes it easy to fit in a homeenvironment. Replacing the ink cartridge can be very expensive, however, especially in the color cartridge, which has wells for three different ink colors and yet must be replaced if only one of those wells runs dry. Ink refill kits can solve the problem by letting you refill the cartridge againand again, cutting down on expense and preventing unused ink.
Step 1
Remove the cartridge from the printer. Look for the best place to access the inkwell. For a BG-20 black ink cartridge, you can find it in the little divot just below the letter "B" on top of theinkwell. For a CL-41 color cartridge, you'll need to peel back the label, which will reveal threetiny air holes beneath. When faced so that the label is right-side up, the hole for the cyan (blue)inkwell is on the left side, the hole for the magenta (red) inkwell is on top and the hole for theyellow inkwell is on the right side. Keep careful track of which is which. Compatible ink cartridges not produced by Canon may have a similar layout, but you will need to double check to ensure the inkwells are in the right location.
Step 2
Drill a small hole in the divot below the "B" or widen the specific hole you require if you arerefilling a color cartridge. You can do this with a drilling device provided in most ink refill kits,or by using a standard drill with a 3 mm bit.
Step 3
Fill the syringe included in the ink refill kit with the properly colored ink (black, yellow, cyan, or magenta). Some ink refill kits require you to pierce the refill ink bottle with a needle, but the principle remains unchanged.
Step 4
Place the tip of the syringe or refill needle into the hole you have drilled. Slowly and gently, allow the ink to drain from the syringe or bottle and into the inkwell of the cartridge. The color cartridge can hold 6 ml of each color (cyan, yellow or magenta). The black cartridge can hold 20ml. The exact amount may vary if you are using a different-yet-compatible cartridge.
Step 5
Remove the needle and stop up the hole with a piece of Scotch tape. It shouldn't interfere withthe functioning of the printer.
Step 6
Turn on the printer and run a cleaning cycle to make sure the cartridge is working, then print outone or two test copies before resuming printing as normal.
