The Prophet (peace be upon him) advised her:
“Be gentle and calm, O ‘Aisha, as Allah likes gentleness in all aairs.”
He also said:
“Show gentleness! For i gentleness is ound insomething, it beauties it, and when it is taken out rom anything, it makes it decient.”
The Prophet (peace be uponhim) used to prevent people fromstanding up for him out of respect. He used to sit wherever there wasa place available in an assembly andnever sought a prominent or elevatedplace. He never wore anything to distinguishhimself from his companions or appear in higher rank than them.He used to mix with the poor and the needy; he used to sit withthe elderly and support the widows. People who did not knowhim could not tell him apart from the rest of the crowd.Addressing his companions, he said:
“Allah has revealed to me,that you must be humble. No one should boast over one another, and no one should oppress another.”
Such was his humbleness that he was fearful of beingworshipped, a privilege only befitting God:
“Do not exceed bounds in praising me as the Christians do inpraising Jesus, Son o Mary. I am only the Lord’s servant; then call me the Servant o Allah and His Messenger.”
The Prophet’s beloved wife, Aa’isha, saidof her noble husband:
“He always helped with the housework and would at times mend his clothes, repair his shoes and sweep the foor.He would milk, protect and eed his animals and do household chores.”
Not only was he a devoted husband, he also encouraged hiscompanions to follow his example:
“The most perect o the believers in aith are the best o them in morals. And the best among them are those who are best to their wives.”
What has preceded is only a glimpseof how Muhammad (peace be uponhim) lived his life. The examples ofkindness and mercy mentioned maycome as a surprise to some peoplegiven the portrayal of Islam in the mediaand its constant misrepresentation. It is important when trying to understand Islam that one goesdirectly to its sources: The Qur’an, and the sayings and actions ofProphet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and that anyone doesnot judge Islam based on the errant actions of a few Muslims.Mahatma K Gandhi, a major political and spiritual leader of theIndian independence movement, remarked:
“It was the rigid simplicity, the utter sel-eacement o the Prophet, the scrupulous regard or his pledges, his intense devotion to his riends and ollowers, his intrepidity, his earlessness, his absolute trust in God and in his own mission. These and not the sword carried everything beore them and surmounted every obstacle.”
George Bernard Shaw, the British playwright, declared:
“The world is in dire need o a man with the mind o Muhammad; religious people in the Middle Ages, due to their ignorance and prejudice, had pictured him in a very dark way as they used to consider him the enemy o Christianity. But ater looking into the story o this man I ound it to be an amazing and a miraculous one, and I came to the conclusion that he was never an enemy o Christianity, and must be called instead the saviour o humanity. In my opinion, i he was to be given control over the world today,he would solve our problems and secure the peace and happiness which the world is longing or.”
(peace be upon him)
