Summer 2014

A couple of months ago, we received a call from an emergency clinic regarding a female
dog struggling to give birth to her puppies. She had already been in labor for 24 hours.
Unfortunately, the owner was unwilling or unable to pay the emergency clinic for the
medical care required, and thus surrendered the dog. The emergency clinic then asked
the Charlotesville-Albemarle SPCA to step in to help the dog, a beautiful black and tan
Dachshund now named Sadie.
When the clinic staf frst saw Sadie, they knew she was in serious medical trouble and
that they needed to act fast. She was not only fghting for her own life, but also for those
of her unborn puppies. Upon examination it was discovered she had a very large puppy
stuck in her birth canal, causing her to have an extensive and painful labor. She was
unable to give birth naturally. SPCA Medical Director Dr. Scheller and our clinic staf
immediately prepared Sadie for a caesarean section (C-section). Sadie was touch-and-
go, but the clinic staf was not only able to save Sadie, but also two of her puppies. After
the operation, Sadie was made comfortable, kept warm, and put on IV fuids and antibiotics that were not only safe
for Sadie, but also safe for her nursing puppies. Shortly after the surgery, Sadie was reunited with her two puppies;
they immediately took to their mama and began to suckle. The happy new family was
then taken in by an experienced SPCA foster home to recover and give the puppies
time and space to grow.
Its rare that our SPCA performs C-sections. In fact, on average, the SPCA veterinary
clinic only performs about one a year, but Sadie was in dire need. Without the
C-section, and the determination and skill of our clinic personnel, she and her
puppies would not have survived. Aiding the clinic staf in doing their job was our
new Multiparameter Monitor,including the
Capnograph recently purchased with support
from the Perrigo Foundation. When hooked up to
a patient, the monitor measures blood pressure,
percentage of oxygenation in the blood and body temperature, and performs an
EKG, which monitors the electrical activity in the patient. Because the stress of the
labor on Sadies litle Dachshund body was so signifcant, monitoring her vital signs
was absolutely, well, vital! SPCA patients, whether in labor or severely injured or
critically ill, will now beneft from this piece of lifesaving equipment.
One of our goals at the SPCA is to replace outdated and less reliable medical
equipment as well as adding new technology essential to our lifesaving work.
Because medical equipment is quite costly, we have a long way to go. Please
consider making a donation to help us upgrade our clinic so we can continue to
save the lives of pets like Sadie and her pups. Love is free, but medical costs add up!
Today Sadie and her puppies are in their new homes! The puppies are thriving and
growing like puppies do with their new families. And Sadie is happy and living the
good life with her three new canine brothers and her new Mom and Dad.
SPCA SAVES DACHSHUND IN DISTRESS
Sadie now lives with the Crutchfeld pack joining two Dachshunds previously adopted from the SPCA, and
a hound mix.

The giggle of a child as she confdently reads with her
new friend, one hand holding the book and the other
stroking soft fur. The glimmer of joy and the twinkle
in an eye as residents at a nursing home feel a cold
nose nuzzle into their hand. Therapy animals have the
ability to create magical moments and leave paw prints on the souls of those they touch.
There is a need in our community for therapy animals. Local libraries, nursing homes,
rehabilitation centers, and assisted living facilities are ecstatic about the prospect of having
cats and dogs, and hopefully even rabbits and guinea pigs, visit their residents. These
animals and their handlers are certain to bring immeasurable
joy to hundreds.
The SPCA recently started a pet therapy program where
owners can learn more about certifying their pet, get
information about facilities in need of pet therapy visits,
and atend monthly informational meetings. Meetings are a
great way to meet other pet therapy teams, get new pointers
for visits, and ask questions. Meeting topics are designed to
help new handlers gain insight and education about types of
visits and the things that they might encounter on visits, and
for seasoned handlers to learn about new opportunities and
share experiences. Upcoming meeting topics include
Keeping Your Animal Physically and Emotionally Safe by
Dr. Kristen Scheller, and Recognizing Stress Signals in Your Animal by Deven Gaston.
For a full list of monthly pet therapy visits, check the SPCA events calendar online at
caspca.org.
The SPCA Pet Therapy Program and all monthly meetings are open to anyone who wishes
to join certifed teams, non-certifed teams/teams in training, and people currently
without animals are all encouraged to join. For teams wishing to become certifed, a
Pet Therapy Class is recommended, followed by a Pet Therapy Test.
Anyone interested in learning more should
contact the SPCA Pet Therapy Coordinator,
Kaicee Robertson, at volunteer@caspca.org
or 434964-3331.
Together you and your animal can touch
countless lives, lift spirits, and help hearts
heal. There is nothing like the unconditional
love of an animal. Help us share an animals
love with those who are truly in need of a
paw, nose, and warm heart.
The 2014 Bow-WOW-Walk, held on Saturday, May 31st,
was the ultimate day of doggie fun! Nearly 400 walkers
and their dogs turned out for this 1st year event, raising
more than $50,000 for the animals at the SPCA. Dogs and
their people gathered in Lee Park before and after the walk
along Charlotesvilles historic downtown, enjoying give-
a-ways from generous animal-loving sponsors, live music,
puppy pedicures, doggie ice cream and more. The walk
was led by our Top Dog Fundraisers team Beths Foster
Families who raised more than $5,000 for homeless pets!
We would like to thank all of our sponsors, fundraisers and
the hundreds of people and pets who turned out to make
the day a ton of fun and a big win for animals in need.

Baylee is a beautiful middle aged girl with a silky soft
coat. She came to the SPCA because her elderly owner
went into assisted living and could no longer care for
her. Baylee was so upset when she arrived that no one
could touch her. Slowly she has come around, and enjoys
atention on her terms, but she isnt doing well in the
shelter environment. She loves to play and has lived with
another cat. We think that she will thrive in a calm home
with a patient and loving human who will treat her like
a princess. Do you want to meet this special girl? Email

We would like to welcome VIRGINIA NATIONAL BANK as our frst SPCA
Pawtner! SPCA Pawtners are the TOP DOGS of all SPCA supporters,
providing underwriting support for our major fundraising events, allowing all
dollars raised to go directly to helping animals in need.
Our event sponsorships and the new Pawtnership program were designed
to give our most loyal sponsors the opportunity to be "top of mind" with our
animal loving supporters, not just at our major events like the Critter Ball, but
throughout the year.
Look for Virginia National Banks Pet of the Month feature on our website
beginning in July!
