Titan Bowl & Billiards, located inthe Titan Student Union, has been servingCal State Fullerton and the surrounding

On August 17th, 2009, the installation
of new Brunswick “Anvilane” syntheticlanes was underway. Within a week, TitanBowl & Billiards was up and running withnew synthetic lanes equipped with topperformance technology, that provides consistentsliding conditions to yield higher scores. The Cal State Fullerton Children’sCenter, a program of Associated StudentsInc. (ASI), recently received a U.S.
Department of Education grant to help
low-income parents attend the universityby making on-campus child care servicesavailable to them.
The campus received $248,117 inrst-year funding of a four-year Child Care
Access Means Parents in School grant
expected to total more than $992,000.Up to 40 such families annually could
be served as a result of the grant. The grant, written by Children’s Centerdirector Betsy Gibbs, will underwrite aportion of the on-campus child care costsfor children whose parents are Cal StateFullerton students receiving Pell Grants. In addition, the funding will supportvarious programmatic aspects of theChildren’s Center, including the hiring of a new education coordinator. The federalfunds will be teamed with other sourcesof funding to support this portion of theChildren’s Center’s total program. The
federal grant will support 44 percent of theproject, ASI will provide 22 percent, withthe remaining 34 percent coming from
parent fees and other sources, such as the
California Department of Education.
“Support of student parents through on-campus child care, helps young parents torealize their educational goals and become
valuable, self-sufcient members of the
community,” said Gibbs about the impact
of the Department of Education grant.
“Orange County’s high cost of living createsa tremendous challenge for these familiespursuing a better future. High-quality childcare is a great investment in the educationalfuture of the children, as well as theirfamilies. These federal funds make a hugecontribution to the Children’s Center program.”ASI has operated the Children’s
Center since 1971. Originally operated
from an off-campus site, the Children’sCenter later relocated to its current campus
location in 1979, where it currently servesthe child care needs of more than 190
children each academic year. Through
the support of a successful 1996 student
fee referendum, construction of a newChildren’s Center facility began this fall
with occupancy scheduled for Spring 2011.
A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for
Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at 10:30am at
the new site of the Children’s Center located
on West Campus Drive.
“The campus community is very excitedabout securing these new resources for theChildren’s Center,” stated Fred Sanchez,Associated Students Inc. executive director.
“Between the ongoing nancial support of
our student body, these new federal funds,
the California Department of Education and
parent-user fees, the Children’s Center willbe able to expand its services to even moreCal State Fullerton students during these
difcult times.”
