Artist Background:
Born into a musical family, J eremih, an RIAA platinum recording artist and producer, is set to release his third studio album. J eremih has
sold over 6 million digital tracks, has over 230 million YouTube views, and has had 2 #1 singles on Urban Radio with Birthday Sex
and Down On Me.
J eremih, the mega-talented 27-year old singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist was a musical prodigy since early
childhood on Chicagos infamous South-side. He was given his first set of drums at age three, and by the time he got to
Morgan Park High School, was adept at drums and piano. His intelligence enabled him to skip junior year, graduate high school
at 16, and enter the University of Illinois as an engineering science major.
But when he started getting involved with on-campus talent shows, music took over. He transferred to Columbia College,
one of Chicagos premier art schools, and began collaborating on demos with music student Mick Schultz. Their mutual love for
music led to the creation of My Ride, J eremihs first song to hit local radio. Birthday Sex followed in October 2008, and J eremih was
soon the talk of Chicago, a hometown hero. He was signed to Def J am in March 2009, and Birthday Sex was released the next month. It
went on to become the summer single of the year, and his self-titled debut album also went to #1 in the US. Since then, J eremih has
become a core artist at Def J am. I feel like Im on the best label I could be on, J eremih says. Im not intimidated by anyone musically,
and Im honored and inspired by the artists around me I didnt get this far by making bad decisions.

The Philly Sound means different things to different people,

1960s the sound was likely to be the blasting sax solos and crisp

and Dave Appell. It is this style that forms the focus of this
anthology, with Lowes labels being matched for independent
success by the likes of V-Tone (run by Venton Buddy Caldwell
from 2034 Ridge Ave), Chancellor (run by Peter DeAngelis and
Bob Marcucci from the Chancellor Room of the Hyatt Hotel), and

originated in Philadelphia but who achieved success on labels

American jazz pianist and composer Ahmed J amal was born in
J uly 1930. He began playing at the age of three, at seven he
started lessons and at 14 he was playing professionally. At this
point he was already recognized as a "coming great" by no less a
talent than Art Tatum. J amal began touring with George
Hudson's Orchestra after graduating from High School in 1948
before moving to Chicago in 1950. He made his first records as
78 RPM discs in 1951 for the Okeh label with The Three Strings
(later called the Ahmad J amal Trio) alongside guitarist Ray
Crawford and a succession of bassists. J amal subsequently
recorded for Parrot(1953-55) and Epic(1955) using the piano-
guitar-bass lineup. The trio's sound changed significantly when
Crawford was replaced with drummer Vernel Fournier in 1957,
and the trio released the live album But Not for Me which stayed
on the ten best-selling charts for 108 weeks and included J amal's
well known song "Poinciana". This four disc compilation brings
together all the music Ahmad J amal released during his first
seven years as a recording artist, covering the period 1951 -
1958. Including the sides he made for Okeh, his one album for
Parrott, his earliest albums for Epic and several records made for
Chess offshoot Argo. Trained in both traditional jazz and
European classical style, Ahmad J amal has been praised as one
of the greatest jazz innovators. Following bebop greats like
Parker and Gillespie, J amal entered the world of jazz at a time
when speed and virtuosic improvisation were central to the
success of jazz musicians as artists. J amal, however, took steps
in the direction of a new movement, later coined "cool jazz". He
emphasized space and time in his musical compositions and
interpretations instead of focusing on the blinding speed of
bebop.

Much of J amal's output between the years of 1959 and 1962
were recorded live at a variety of clubs and venues in Chicago
and other US cities. One of his stand-out records from this period
was the marvelous collection titled 'Ahmed J amal's Alhambra',
released in 1961 and containing performances recorded at his
own club that same year, shortly before it closed. The album
went on to be one of the trios most successful records. The
follow up, another live set this time recorded in San Francisco,
'Ahmad J amal at The Blackhawk', was equally well received and
included his version of Irving Berlin's The Best Thing For You
which became a live favorite thereafter. In 1962 The Three
Strings disbanded and J amal moved to New York City where, at
the age of 32, he took a three year hiatus. He resumed touring in
1964 when he began playing with bassist J amil Nasser with
whom he performed and recorded until 1972.

Now in his eighties, Ahmad J amal has continued to play
numerous tours and release numerous recordings. His most
recently released album is Saturday Morning from 2012. This
collection contains all of this jazz legend's recorded output as
released between 1959 and 1962, featuring both live and studio
recordings it is the perfect accompaniment to this label's earlier
release 'The Complete Collection 1951 - 1958'. Together these
compilations provide the most complete set of recordings by
Ahmad J amal yet to emerge, containing as they do every track
released during the first decade of this true master's career.

Dr. Feelgood, and was originally released in
1977. During recording of Sneakin' Suspicion,
the band were dealt a potentially fatal blow
with the departure of guitarist, co-writer and

J .J . Cale begun his recording career in the late 1960s, but
following a lack of any recognition towards the end of the decade
was planning to give up playing. Then he heard a version of his
song 'After Midnight' on the radio, performed by no other than
Eric Clapton and his mind was changed. Instead he put out a
number of quite remarkable country-tinged, delightfully laid back
collections of songs throughout that decade and composed
classic after classic - 'Cocaine', 'Magnolia', 'Crazy Mama', the list
is endless - which he both recorded himself and gave to others to
do likewise. Clapton went on to record many of J .J .'s finest
numbers. This radio broadcast, transmitted live from the 'Fine
Line Music Caf' in Minneapolis on 5th September 1988, finds
J .J . in spectacular form. Despite, at this time, not having
released a studio album for five years, he performs a rip-roaring
set complete with full band and shares vocals on a number of
tracks with veteran Cale band member and more recently, his
wife, Christine Lakeland.

The set-list played on this glorious late summer evening features
many of the Cale classics mentioned above and a host of others
to make for a show of barely paralleled excellence. However,
three bonus cuts are included here, going back to a previous
radio broadcast from the mid-1970s when Cale performed at the
Cain's ballroom in his home town of Tulsa on New Year's Eve
1975. While the man is no longer with us the music he left behind
will go on forever.

Feature-length documentary exploring the events that led
to El vis Presley's groundbreaking musical emergance in
1954.

It's the 5th of J uly 1954. A generally quiet, respectable and
religious young man, who loves his mother but also loves all
types of music - especially Blues and Country - enters the Sun
Studios in Memphis. He cuts a record with some local musicians
and in so doing changes the face of music forever and changes
the world too. The young man's name is Elvis Aaron Presley of
course and the record he makes, with its fusion of black & white
influences, nails a genre that will endure for, at the very least, the
next 60 years. This film explores how it was that the events that
led up to this fateful session conspired to create a brand new
music and a brand new way of life for all those who came along
in its wake. With contributions from those who were there at the
time and from others who have studied the subject in depth, and
with rare footage, photographs, and music from those pivotal
sessions, this documentary goes some way to discovering the

Originally released in 1982 and long unavailable, Rhythm
Collision Vol.1 was an acclaimed collaboration with renowned
dub producer Mad Professor. Now this seminal album is available
once more and featuring three previously unreleased bonus tracks.
Given the Ruts' love for and incorporation of reggae into their
most strident punk material, it shouldn't have come as much
surprise that they would eventually jump headlong into dub.

Unlike the other post-punk bands who were influenced by dub
and mutated it into something of their own, Rhythm Collision
sticks closer to the origin sound, rarely coming off like anything
other than a late '70s Trojan recording act. Buried piano motifs,
melodica bleats, random percussive effects, head-spinning
production techniques, and those deep, deep, deep basslines
load the bases. Aside from sporadic vocal phrasings, it's all
instrumental. Most everything unwinds at a relaxed pace, save
for "Push Yourself," which would fit comfortably in a DJ set
between Liquid Liquid and Grandmaster Flash. The most
uncharacteristic track of the record, its handclaps, funky
bassline, and Chic-like guitar flicks are capable of making the
most dedicated Ruts fan forget who is playing. As far as an
homage to a style that's provided inspiration, Rhythm Collision
couldn't have done much better. ****1/2 allmusic.com
