ST. PATRICK
St. Patrick·s Day is a national holiday in Ireland, and a provincialholiday in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.St. Patrick's Day honors St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. St.Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17. This date wasnot the day St. Patrick was born but the day he died inthe year 461AD.At the age of 16, he was sold as a slave by a group ofIrish that raided his village. During his captivity, hebecame closer to God.He escaped from slavery after six years and went to amonastery for a period of twelve years. During histraining he became aware that his calling was to convertthe pagans to Christianity. He traveled throughoutIreland, establishing monasteries across the country. He also set up schoolsand churches which would aid him in his conversion of the Irish country toChristianity. He died on March 17 in AD 461.That day has been commemorated as St. Patrick's Day ever since.
 
 
TRADITIONS
People wear green in memory of Ireland, the Emerald Isle.One traditional icon of the day is the shamrock. St.Patrick used it in his sermons to represent how theFather, the Son, and the Holy Spirit could all existas separate elements of the same entity. Hisfollowers adopted the custom of wearing ashamrock on his feast day.Other traditional icon is the Leprechaun. Theyare also very famous inIreland. Leprechauns are little make-believe fairies thatlive in Ireland. They are the shoemakers for the fairies.The story is that if you catch one you can make him tell you where he hides his gold.
According to legend, St. Patrick used theshamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explainthe Holy Trinity to the Irish.
