The 9th Annual Building EngagedCitizens Conference (BEC) took place on September 24-26 at theUniversity of Montana in Missoula,marking the swearing in of the 16thclass of Campus Corps members!The event kicked off with a Fridayevening welcome celebration in theUniversity Center Ballroom withguest speakers Andrea Vernon andColleen Kane of UM’s Office forCivic Engagement.On Saturday, CampusCorps and MTCC VISTA membersbroke out into training sessionsspecific to their service terms. Anew member orientation track wasfacilitated by Program SpecialistEmily Clark and Campus CorpsProgram Manager Eric Cardella.Second-year Campus Corpsmembers attended a goal-settingworkshop, followed by sessionscovering leadership styles andteam dynamics, led by SarahSadowski, Program Director of Young Adult Service Corps.VISTA members participated in agrant writing and sustainabilityworkshop facilitated by ReturnedPeace Corps Volunteer and pro-fessional trainer, Michael LaVolpeof Denver, CO.

THE LEADERS BEHIND THE CORPS
Campus Corps has a variety of term options for membership and leadership. There are several choices that members can maketo commit to serving their communities. In addition to student members, there are 18 full-time AmeriCorps members thatserve on 13 campuses to strengthen and enhance Campus Corps around Montana. These leaders come from all over the U.S.,and have dedicated their year to serving at campuses throughout Montana to fulfill the mission of Campus Corps. Leaders work directly with members, coordinators, faculty, student volunteers and anyone interested in getting involved in their communities.Leaders plan meaningful service projects and facilitate reflection activities to put more meaning behind service. Now is yourchance to learn where these leaders come from, what they’re doing, and where they’re going after Campus Corps!

MTCC Senior Leader 
 Chrissy Orangio is from Atlanta, GA currentlyserving in Missoula, as the MTCC network leaderfor Campus Corps. She just graduated from ElonUniversity in North Carolina where she was thedirector of the Service Learning Commu-nity. After her time with AmeriCorps she will bemoving to Southern Africa to get a Master’s inConservation. In the mean time, I love playingguitar, volunteering with youth organizations, andlearning new things.
Montana Tech
 Janel Evans is originally from Butte, Montana, andwould love to eventually settle in Livingston. Sheis currently serving her second term as a CampusCorps Leader at Montana Tech and plans to at-tend the University of Montana in Missoula nextyear. She loves to camp, spend time with familyand friends, and enjoy life.
Salish Kootenai College
  Joni Bolman is from North Dakota and joinedCampus Corps last summer as the CampusCorps leader at Salish Kootenai College as part of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act.
Blackfeet Community College
 Heather SpeakThunder is a member of the Assini-boine tribe, originally from Fort Belknap, andcurrently serves as the Campus Corps Leader atBlackfeet Community College in Browning. She isthe oldest (and shortest) sibling in a large family,Heather plans to go back to school for a Busi-ness degree and hopes to start a small business inher hometown of Harlem.
Fort Peck Community College
Adriann Ricker, a native of Poplar Montana, wasvery active in community service before her timewith AmeriCorps. She is completing a B.S. inHealth Promotion and is working towards thebetterment of Indian people with chronic dis-eases. Her hobbies include spending time withher family and friends, playing piano, singing, hunt-ing, and fishing.
University of Great Falls
Nel Sutliff is originally from Colorado Springs,Colorado; however, her husband is an active dutyAir Force member so she has lived in six states inthe past two years. She recently finished herMasters of Science Education degree in Elemen-tary Reading and Literacy. Her future careerplans include working as an adjunct instructor inthe education department for the University of Great Falls. Her passions are hiking and campingwith her two dogs and her husband.
Carroll College
Laura D’Esterre was born in Hacketstown, New Jersey where her favorite candy Starburst ismade. She lived in Helena, MT for about 21 yearsand would like to live here for the rest of herlife. Her anticipated career path is to have a PhDin Theology and Marriage and Family, in Bostonor a University in California. Her passion is inhelping people.
University of Montana
 After graduating with degrees in Biology and FlutePerformance at the University of Montana, AnnaSemple has returned as a Campus CorpsLeader. She spent her time since graduation trav-elling, teaching, studying biology and playing musicacross the US and Latin America. As a PeaceCorps Volunteer in Paraguay she taught Environ-mental Education. Next year she plans to studyyouth development and education in graduateschool and hopes to return to Paraguay to teachmusic to local youth. In her free time she can befound in the mountains or tracking down livemusic around Western Montana.
Fort Belknap College
 Brenda Sears is originally from California, butmoved to Montana at an early age. She has a K-8teaching certificate and feels called to any servicework that involves kids. She has been involvedwith Boys and Girls’ Clubs of America and Volun-teer Action for Youth, and opens her house to allchildren who just need a place to hang out whenthey have nowhere else to go. She enjoys livingeach day to its fullest.
 
University of Montana Western
 Jon Stephani is a native of Corvallis, Montana, andis currently serving in Dillon as the CampusCorps Team Leader at UM Western. He plans toteach literature and writing at the university levelin the near future. He loves to hunt, fish, hikeand enjoy the outdoors, and also enjoys writingpoetry and non-fiction. According to his office-mate, Jon is a “blue-eyed, free-spirited nomad of knowledge . . . and a corndog!”
Flathead Valley Community College
Becky Groose- Jones is a 4th generation Kalispellresident. Her work experience includes over 20years with not-for-profit organizations andschools with a focus on family education, projectdevelopment and grant writing . In her sparetime, she and her daughter like to steal away intothe fields and meadows in search of birds of preyfor journaling and photography opportunities.
Flathead Valley Community College
 Wendy Jeschke is a native Montanan who haslived in the Flathead Valley for over 31 years. Sheenjoys camping, hiking, fishing, boating, scrap-booking, riding horses and spending time with herhusband and four kids. Wendy serves her com-munity in varoius capacities, but one of her favor-ite places to serve is her local community kitchen.
University of Montana
 Ashley Widtfeldt is originally from Boston. She isin her second Campus Corps term and currentlyserves at UM’s Office for Civic Engagement. Sheloves Missoula and would love to stick aroundafter finishing Campus Corps. Her favorite pas-times are gardening, cooking, and making jewelry.
Montana State University Bozeman
Ariel Donohue joins MSU from New York State.She served with AmeriCorps NCCC (NationalCivilian Community Corps) in the Southwest andthe Gulf region working in disaster response,construction, environmental work, mentoring andyouth development. She has a degree in Elemen-tary Education and plans on teaching and incorpo-rating service into the classroom. Her passionsare sports, laughing, chocolate, and adrenalinefilled activities.
Montana State University Billings
 Tracy Mouser is a Billings native, though she livedin California for ten years. She plans to use hereducation award to pursue a masters degree inStudent Services at MSU-Billings. She loves any-thing outside— gardening, hiking, snowshoeing,scrapbooking, hanging out with family and writingmusic for her church.
Montana Tech
 Jenny Wilson is a native of Tula, Mississippi, and iscurrently serving in Butte. She loves to hike,hunt, fish, camp and ride horses and four-wheelers. . . and she is very excited about goingsledding, skiing and snowboarding for the firsttime this winter. She is currently completing anM.F.A. in Creative Writing and eventually hopesto earn a Ph.D. in a related field.
Montana State University Northern
 Delme Mundell-Watson
 
is from Canada, but hewent to School at Flathead High, Flathead ValleyCommunity College, and MSU-Northern. Hereceived a Bachelors Degree in Graphic Designfrom MSU-Northern last Summer. His directservice is tutoring at the Student Support Ser-vices, as well volunteering at the Boys & GirlsClub in Havre. He keeps busy because there isalways something to do.
